गिल्बर्ट (E. W. Gilbert, 1951) के अनुसार अमलैण्ड शब्द की उत्पत्ति स्वेडिस भाषा के शब्द 'omland' से हुई है जिसका अर्थ है 'नगर के चारों ओर का क्षेत्र'।
अमलैण्ड (umland) एक जर्मन भाषा का शब्द है, जिसका सर्वप्रथम प्रयोग डेनियल सैन्डर्स ने 1883 में 'environs' परिवेष्टित क्षेत्र के लिए किया। आन्द्रे ऐलिक्स ने 1914 एवं 1922 में लिखे गये लेखों में इस शब्द का प्रयोग 'आर्थिक प्रभावक्षेत्र' (economic domain) हेतु किया।
