Jardin Majorelle, Marrakesh, Morocco 🇲🇦

It took 40 years to build this Eden-like garden in Marrakech, later restored by Yves Saint-Laurent.

The Jardin Majorelle, or Majorelle Garden, is a botanical and artist’s landscape garden in Marrakech.

For almost 40 years, he carefully cultivated 135 plant species from five continents, turning his property into an enchanting landscape garden of cactus, yucca, jasmine, bougainvillea, palms, coconut trees, banana trees, white water lilies, bamboo and more. He also used his own color to paint the buildings dotted around the property, a clear and intense blue that he trademarked as bleu Majorelle, or Majorelle Blue.

Yves Saint-Laurent died in 2008, and his ashes were scattered in the rose garden at Jardin Majorelle. Two years later, the street in front of the Jardin Majorelle was renamed the Rue Yves Saint Laurent in his honor.

The Ruins of St. Dunstan-in-the-East, London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

One of the few remaining casualties of the London Blitz, this destroyed church has become an enchanting public garden.

An English parish church was originally built during Norman times. But in 1941, the church was devastated by the Blitz.

In 1967, the City of London Corporation decided to turn the bombed-out shell of the church into a public garden, which remains to this day.

Hidden away on a secluded side street, and long since dwarfed by the modern steel and chrome structures of the city, it remains one of London’s secret gardens. One of the last Blitz-damaged buildings left in the United Kingdom, overgrown with trees, ivy, and wall-climbing flowers growing amongst the ruined arches, it’s a poignant living memorial to the horrors of the Blitz and a testament to the resilience of the City of London which survived it.

📍Location: halfway between the Tower of London and London Bridge

Marrakesh, Morocco🇲🇦

Marrakesh has changed little since the Middle Ages. You could spend days here wandering around maze-like alleyways discovering the city's colorful souks, palaces and gardens.

Between tradition and modernity, Marrakech is the promise of unequalled sensations.

Marrakech shower its visitors by its splendour and its diversity, you just have to leave the ramparts to be immersed in modern Morocco. The districts of Gueliz and Hivernage offer the most modern infrastructures.

Ponte da Misarela (Misalera Bridge), Montalegre, Portugal 🇵🇹

Local lore says the devil built this beautiful medieval bridge to help a fleeing bandit.

According to local lore, a criminal was in dire need of a way to cross the river while fleeing the nearby village. He summoned the devil, who kindly said he’d help the man—for the small price of his soul, of course. The man agreed, and the devil created a temporary bridge that vanished before those pursuing the convict could cross as well.

Supposedly, the bandit felt so remorseful he later sought out a priest to repent. A virtuous priest took pity on the man and used his Rosary and a bit of holy water to expel the devil and turn the bridge into a permanent structure.

Lençóis Maranhenses Dunes, Santo Amaro do Maranhão, Brazil 🇧🇷

A faux desert landscape in the middle of the jungle that sprouts oases during the rainy season.

Between the months of July and September, the depressions between the dunes fill with rainwater creating pools ranging from small ponds to deep lakes. Like any real desert, the 1,500 square kilometer area supports little plant life despite the rain, but the transient bodies of water amazingly populate with marine life each year as migratory birds accidentally deposit fish eggs in the waters.

The Lençóis Maranhenses Dunes are recognized as a national park and are closely protected, not allowing vehicles within the recognized borders of the park, but it’s just as well since breaking down in the desert is bad enough without having to worry about drowning.

Langkawi Sky Bridge, Langkawi, Malaysia 🇲🇾

This dangerous-looking suspension bridge may have been too unstable to remain open.

Constructed in 2005, the steel skybridge is a pedestrian thoroughfare that allowed visitors to take a scenic stroll high above the lush forests of the Gunung Mat Chinchang mountain. The path is suspended over 2,000 feet above sea level by a single massive pylon that trails thick steel cables down to the bridge. The pieces of the over 400-foot bridge were lifted onto the mountain via helicopter and constructed at elevation.

It looks both futuristic and almost frighteningly precarious.

After being open for a scant few years, it closed in 2012 for renovations and repairs. It partially reopened in February 2015 and is now fully accessible.

Blue Cave of Bisevo, Komiža, Croatia 🇭🇷

Though not an easy trek, it is a rewarding one – the blue cave is a truly enchanting natural wonder.

The cave is at its most beautiful between 11 am and 12 pm on a sunny day. The bright blue glowing effect is created when the sun’s rays enter through the water and reflect off the limestone floor of the cave. The bright sun lights up the water, and the glowing ocean illuminates the cave walls a brilliant blue, creating an ethereal glowing blue grotto.

📍Location: The Blue Cave (Modra špilja) is located at the Balun Cove on the eastern side of the island.

Gourgue d'Asque, Asque, France 🇫🇷

A French valley with forests so lush it was nicknamed "the Small Amazonia of the Pyrenees."

In addition to covering rocks and trees, lichens hang down from branches like tentacles, adding to the otherworldly feel of the place. Otters play in the river and vibrantly colored fire salamanders can be found among the ferns.

St. John’s wort, showy toothwort, and mother-of-the-evening are among the more colorful plant life. Resident trees include maples, chestnuts, and birches. There are also caves that, like the gorge itself, were created by the force of the river water.
