What is the Flipped Classroom?

Did you know that FLIP is an acronym?

Flipping the classroom is a pedagogical approach in which students first explore new course content outside of class by viewing a pre-recorded lecture video or digital module or completing a reading or preparatory assignment.

In-class time is organized around student engagement, inquiry, and assessment, allowing students to grapple with, apply, and elaborate on course concepts.

In-class sessions typically involve collaborative coursework and the use of active learning strategies, such as case studies, problem sets, or structured discussions.

The flipped classroom is known by various names, including the inverted classroom and the flip. Origination stories differ, but most credit Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams, high school chemistry teachers from Colorado, who began using recorded lectures in 2006.

There are four pillars of Flipped Learning:
F—Flexible Environments
L-–Learning Culture
I—Intentional Content
P—Professional Educators.

There are many reported benefits to implementing flipped classrooms, including:

1. More individualized help during class time, as an instructor can be a “guide on the side”, rather than a “sage on the stage.”

2. More opportunities for deliberate practice and increased support for students as they grapple with higher-order disciplinary concepts and problems.

3. More opportunities for students to interact with their instructors and peers.

4. Student control over the pace of lectures: if providing video lectures, students can watch, rewind, and fast-forward as needed.

5. Resiliency: since the lecture-style material is pre-recorded, in-classroom activities are flexible, and classes are less likely to fall behind if technology or life circumstances interfere with a synchronous course session. Out-class materials can also be used in future semesters depending on the content.

Recent studies suggest that the benefits of flipped classrooms are due, in part, to the incorporation of in-class activities, collaboration, and active learning strategies that have been shown to enhance student learning (see, for example, DeLozier & Rhodes, 2017; Jensen et al., 2015; Means et al., 2009).

Here’s a useful tip to help students improve their writing. ✍️ 🤩

Ask them to read their work aloud. While it may not feel as natural—or modest—as reading silently, it can help them catch often-overlooked errors, a study found.

🌟 "Halloween Around the World Pictionary" 🌟

Objective: This activity encourages ESL students to learn about different Halloween traditions in various countries while practicing their vocabulary and drawing skills.

Materials Needed:
1. Printed information sheets about Halloween traditions in different countries.
2. Whiteboard, chalkboard, or large sheets of paper.
3. Markers or chalk.
4. Timer.

Instructions:

1. Preparation:
- Gather information about Halloween traditions in different countries and create a list of keywords related to each tradition.
- Write down these keywords on separate pieces of paper or cards.

🌟TIP: here is a great article for this activity: https://www.history.com/topics/halloween/halloween-around-the-world

2. Introduction:
- Begin by discussing the concept of Halloween and its significance in your own country.
- Introduce the idea that Halloween is celebrated differently in various parts of the world.

3. Country Descriptions:
- Distribute the information sheets about Halloween traditions in different countries to your students. Include details about how Halloween is celebrated, special customs, and any unique aspects of the holiday.
- Review the keywords related to each tradition with your students.

4. Pictionary Game:
- Divide the class into two teams.
- Each team takes turns selecting a keyword related to a Halloween tradition from one of the countries you discussed.
- A student from the team has one minute to draw and get their team to guess the keyword. No talking is allowed.
- If their team guesses correctly within the time limit, they earn a point.

5. Discussion:
- After the game, have a group discussion by asking questions like:
- "What did you learn about how Halloween is celebrated in other countries?"
- "Which keywords were the most challenging to convey through drawings?"
- "Are there any customs or traditions from your own culture that are similar to what we've discussed?"

6. Wrap-Up:
- Conclude the activity by summarizing the various Halloween traditions and emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity.

This activity makes learning about different Halloween traditions engaging and fun, without the need for food. It's an excellent way to celebrate Halloween in the classroom while improving vocabulary and drawing skills. 🌎🎨📚

🎃 Halloween, a widely celebrated holiday in many English-speaking countries, is a fantastic topic. It provides valuable insights into cultural aspects and offers numerous language learning opportunities. 🎃👻

🎃 Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth.

🎃The Christian holiday of All Saints' Day was later merged with Samhain, creating the precursor to modern Halloween traditions.

🎃 Halloween's association with costumes, jack-o'-lanterns, and trick-or-treating developed in the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving into the holiday we know today. 🎃👻🕯️
🎃🎃🎃 Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
