Forming the Instrumental case with neuter singular nouns is quite easy:

Just add м to the end of a neuter noun and that’s it!

ли́цо – лицо́м
окно – окно́м
де́рево – де́ревом
зда́ние – зда́нием
со́лнце – со́лнцем
жилище́ – жили́щем
варе́нье – варе́ньем

For feminine nouns ending in …
… ь -> add ю
… я -> replace я with ей (or ёй, if stressed)
… а -> replace а with ой (sometimes ою), but
… ж, ш, ч, щ, ц + a -> replace a with ей

луна́ – луно́й / луно́ю
гра́ница – грани́цей
рука́ – руко́й / руко́ю
неде́ля – неде́лей
ста́нция – ста́нцией
дверь – две́рью

Let’s learn how to form the Instrumental case. As usual, we are starting from masculine singular nouns.

For masculine nouns ending in …
… й -> replace with ем (or ём, if stressed)
… ь -> replace with ем (or ём, if stressed)
… unstressed ж, ш, ч, щ, ц -> add ем
… any other case -> add ом

дом – до́мом
за́яц – за́йцем
нож – ножом́
край – кра́ем
конь – конём

This lesson brings us back to the Russian grammar. Today we starting to get familiar with the Russian Instrumental case.

The instrumental case denotes the instrument or agent by which the action is performed. It answers the questions:

– by means of what/whom?
– with what/whom?

The Instrumental case can be used with or without any preposition. Somе prepositions are used only with the Instrumenal, for example:

ме́жду – between
пе́ред – in front of
над – above/over
