๐Ÿ“Š Bharti Airtel Q2 FY25 net profit nearly triples to Rs 3,593 crore; tariff hikes, growth in India and Africa boost earnings ๐Ÿ“Š

๐Ÿ“ฎ Bharti Airtel's Q2 FY25 net profit surged 167 percent to Rs 3,593 crore from Rs 1,341 crore a year earlier, driven by strong performance in its India and Africa businesses. Despite the substantial growth, the net profit figure missed Street expectations of Rs 4,398 crore, based on Bloomberg's poll of brokerage estimates. The companyโ€™s revenue from operations for the July-September quarter rose 12 percent year-on-year to Rs 41,473 crore.

๐Ÿ“ฎ Bharti Airtel's India revenue grew 16.9 percent on-year to Rs 31,561 crore, led by a robust 18.5 percent growth in the mobile services segment, which benefited from tariff hikes and increased smartphone penetration. The average revenue per user (ARPU) for its India mobile segment rose to Rs 233, up from Rs 203 a year ago, amid Bharti Airtelโ€™s ongoing efforts to optimise customer mix and premiumise its base.

*Understanding India Electricity Consumption*

โ€ข India consumed 141 billion kWh of electricity in September 2024 with average load of 213 GW.

> Contribution
- 69% of which came from coal / lignite plants,
- 2% from gas,
- 3% from nuclear,
- 16% from hydro,
- 7.5% from Solar,
- 6% from Wind.
- Rest 1% from other sources.

> Consumption pattern
- Morning (6 AM-10 AM): 16%
- Daytime (10AM-6 PM): 35%
- Evening (6 PM-10 PM): 17%
- Night 10PM- 6 AM): 31%

โ€ข Solar generation during Sep24 was 10.6 billion kWh of which 81% came during day slot (10AM to 6 PM), 19% during morning hours and 0.4% during evening hours

> Thus, solar plants supplied :
- 17% of daytime (8hrs)
- 9% of morning hours (4 hrs) and
- 7.5% of total power consumption (24 hrs)

What if we decide to replace all our daytime consumption with solar as of now (theoretically)

Calculations,
โ€ข Out of 141 billion kWh we consumed in Sep'24, 50 billion kWh were consumed during daytime (10AM to 6 PM) or during solar hours.

To replace entire 50 billion kWh with solar, we need 490 GWp of solar capacity _(@18% CUF, very conservative)_ or 350 GWac _(1.4 DC overloading)_

This will also replace 11.7 billion kWh out of 23.1 billion kWh of morning consumption (51%) and 1% of evening consumption (226 million kWh out of 23.8 billion kWh)

Thus, we will be able to replace 62 billion kWh out of 141 billion kWh of total consumption or 44%. But without grid balancing, this is far fetched.

*What if we plan to replace all of it (141 billion kWh) with only solar?*

To replace all of 141 billion kWh with only solar, we may need to install 1120 GWp or 800 GWac (1.4 DC over loading) (excluding oversizing needed to make up for roundtrip efficiency of storage)
However, excess generation in morning (3.7 billion kWh) and daytime (64 billion kWh) will have to be shifted to evening and night hours using storage
Required storage capacity could be ~ 2,300 GWh and depending on discharge duration it may vary _(Assuming 4hr discharge = ~600GW)_

That's massive BESS opportunity.

*That's why confluence of different energy technologies the future, which integrate both conventional & new energy sources*

_All the calculation is on current consumption, whereas electricity consumption itself is growing at ~8% and more_

Best-performing private lender beats Kotak Mahindra Bank in valuation

ICICI Bank โ€” the second largest private lender โ€” has overtaken Kotak Mahindra Bank in valuation after the latterโ€™s shares plunged the most since June 4. The stock of Kotak Mahindra Bank slumped more than 4% in Mondayโ€™s (October 21) trade after the net interest margin (NIM) of the bank contracted 11 basis points (bps) to 4.9% in the September quarter.

The lower margin was due to a slowdown in unsecured disbursements and an increase in loan slippages, which raised its cost of funds. The fresh slippages for the quarter increased 38% sequentially to โ‚น1,875 crore. The fall in shares also resulted in its valuation premium with other lenders to narrow.

According to Bloomberg data, ICICI Bank now tops the valuation chart with a one-year forward price-to-book of 2.96 times. In comparison, Kotak Mahindra Bank commands a price-to-book of 2.92x. Interestingly, the valuation gap between the two lenders was as high as 25% at the beginning of the year.
