It is reported that Ibrāhīm b. Adham – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

A person has not been true to Allāh, the mighty and sublime, if he loves recognition (fame).

Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Al-Zuhd article 2240

It is reported that ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

I do not like it that a day or night comes upon me without me looking at the speech of Allāh, meaning reading from the muṣḥaf.

BENEFIT 300: Have Ahlus-Sunnah changed their stance on revolutions following the fall of Bashar al-Assad?

Sheikh Salman Al-’Imad writes:

"Ahlus-Sunnah, at the onset of the Syrian uprising in 2011 during the so-called 'Arab Spring', which affected many Arab countries including Syria, maintained a clear and firm stance of rejection and rebuking. This position was well-documented and rooted in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the Manhaj of the righteous predecessors, may Allāh be pleased with them.

The consequences of these revolutions brought great harm to all the countries where they occurred, including Syria. It is a firmly established principle among Ahlus-Sunnah that rebellion against a Muslim ruler is prohibited in all forms, as proven by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of scholars. As for rebelling against a disbelieving ruler, Ahlus-Sunnah have outlined specific conditions, among them the necessity of capability and ensuring that the resulting harm does not outweigh the benefit.

Additionally, it is a point of unanimous agreement among Ahlus-Sunnah that the Alawites (Nusayris), including Bashar Al-Assad, are disbelievers. This ruling is not recent; rather, it has been known among Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah for centuries. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allāh have mercy on him) stated in 'Minhaj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah' (7/415):
"For this reason, the Rafidah were among the greatest causes for the entry of the disbelieving Turks into the lands of Islam...Among them are those with the greatest hypocrisy, such as the Nusayris, Ismailis, and their likes, who harbour greater disbelief internally and greater enmity towards Allāh and His Messenger than the Jews and Christians." Ahlus-Sunnah’s rulings are not pre-packaged fatwas with set production and expiration dates. When rebellion against Bashar Al-Assad’s regime initially failed to yield any tangible Islamic benefit for Muslims, it was met with rejection and criticism from Ahlus-Sunnah. This was due to the absence of conditions permitting rebellion against a disbelieving ruler and the overwhelming harms that resulted.

However, when a victory was achieved that brought benefit to Muslims, Ahlus-Sunnah rejoiced at this triumph. Their stance on revolutions and uprisings remains consistent and unchanged. Some individuals, harbouring malice in their hearts, attempt to portray this joy as a contradiction in the principles of Ahlus-Sunnah. They may hope to hear discontent or complaints from Ahlus-Sunnah in order to exploit such opportunities to attack them.

To such individuals, we say: O Muslim, we rejoiced and prostrated in gratitude to Allāh for the downfall of the tyrant of Syria and the removal of the Alawite Rafidi filth from the land. We also pray that Allāh appoints righteous Sunni Muslim leaders over the Syrian people who will establish their religion and worldly affairs.

Finally, Allāh the Almighty says (interpreted meaning):
"Alif Lam Mim. The Byzantines have been defeated in the nearest land, but after their defeat, they will triumph within a few years. To Allāh belongs the command, before and after. And on that day, the believers will rejoice in Allāh’s support. He supports whomever He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful." [Surah al-Rum: 1-5]

Ibn Jarir, in his Tafsir, explains:
"The interpretation of the Āyah is that Persia defeated the Byzantines in the nearest land to the lands of Syria, but the Byzantines, who are Christians, would later defeat Persia within a few years. To Allāh belongs the command both before and after their victory, for He decrees as He wills. And on that day when the Byzantines defeat Persia, the believers will rejoice at Allāh’s victory, which He grants to whomever He wills, for He is All-Mighty, Most Merciful."

Muslims had hoped for the victory of the Byzantines over Persia because the Byzantines were people of the Book, in contrast to the polytheists. Thus, they rejoiced at this triumph, which Allāh described as a victory. Similarly, we ask Allāh to complete the joy for the Syrian people by appointing over them righteous leaders, removing from them the wicked, and keeping away all forms of evil. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds.

Ibn Muflih Al-Hanbali rahimahullah said:

ما أخْوفني أن يكون المصحف في بيتك وأنت مُرتكب لنواهي الحق سبحانه فيه؛ فتدخل تحت قَوْله: {فَنَبَذُوهُ وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ}

"I am most fearful that you have a Mus-haf in your home yet you commit acts prohibited by the Almighty therein; thus, you fall under His statement: 'they casted it behind their backs'."

The one who knows Allah

Abū l-Faraj ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ibn al-Jawzī
‎ رحمه الله said:

There is not in this worldly life or the hereafter a life better than the life of those who know Allah, glory to Him, for the knower of Allah stays in His presence when he is alone, and if a blessing comes into his life, he knows from Whom it comes, and if he experiences something that would have been bitter, it tastes sweet in his mouth because of his knowledge of the One who sent it as a test.

If pain encompasses a knower of Allah, he turns away from the apparent cause of it, and will not see other than its Sender. He is in the best of living with Him: When he is silent, he thinks of carrying out what is due to Him, when he speaks, he speaks that which pleases Him. His heart does not attach itself to a wife or child, and does not needily cling to the love of anyone. His body interacts with people, but his soul is with its Master.

The knower of Allah has no worry in the worldly life, no sadness at the time of departure from it, no apprehension of being abandoned in the grave, and there is no fear upon him on the Day of Judgment.

Those who have no knowledge of Allah continuously stumble and cry out due to their afflictions, because they do not know the One who is afflicting them. They feel sad when they miss out on what they wish for, because they don’t know the wisdom in it. They seek assistance in their own like [i.e. other people], because there is no familiarity between them and their Lord. They fear departure, because they have not prepared provisions for it, and they have no knowledge of the way.

وسطية أهل السنة و الجماعة في صفات الله بين المعطِّلة و المشبِّهة

Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah took the correct path( middle path ) between المعطِّلة and the المشبِّهة regarding the names and attributes of Allah.

من هم المعطِّلة
هم الجهمية نسبة إلى الجهم من صفوان.

المعطِّلة غلوا و أفرطوا في التنزيه حتى نفوا أسماء الله و صفاته حذرا من التشبيه بزعمهم

Who are the المعطِّلة?
They are Jahmiya, named after the Jaham bin Safwan.

The معطِّلة ones went to extremes and exaggerated in their exaltation until they denied the names and attributes of Allah, out of caution against making similarity to their claims.

من هم المشبِّهة
سُمُّوا بذلك، لأنهم غلوا و افرطوا في إثبات الصفات حتى شبهوا الله بخلقه و مثَّلوا صفاته بصفاتهم، تعالى الله عمَّا يقولون.

Who are المشبِّهة?
They were called that, because they went to extremes in affirming the attributes of Allah to the point that they likened Allah to His creation and represented His attributes with their own. Allah is exalted above what they say.

و من روسهم داود الجواربي

Among their leaders was Daoud al-Jawabi

التشبيه-resembling Allah names and attributes with other creations

*المعطِّلة have with them*

التعطيل-distorting Allah names and attributes

التنزيه - Freeing Allah from any defects and similarities to his


و أهل السنة عندهم الإثبات و التنزيه فجمعوا بين الحُسنيين.

As for people of Sunnah they have affirmed for Allah his names and attributes and negated for Allah any similarities, so they united the two goodness.

التنزيه- Freeing Allah from any defects and similarities to his


و أمَّا أهل السنة و الجماعة فإنَّهم توسَّطوا بين هؤلاء و هؤلاء فأثبتوا بلا تشبيه ونزَّهوا بلا تعطيل،
قال الله عزَّ وجلَّ ﴿لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وهو السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ﴾ [الشورى: ١١].

As for Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah, they mediated between these and those, so they affirmed without any تشبيه and they freed Allah from anyone to be similar to him without distorting and denying

Allah Almighty said:
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.

The statement of the scholars regarding both sect

قال ابن قيم في المقدمة التي بين قصيدته النونية فالمشبيه يعبد صنما والمعطل يعبد عدما، والموحد يعبد إلها واحدا صمدا

Ibn al-Qayyim said in the introduction to his poem “Al-Nuniya”: “The one who is مشبيه worships an idol, the one who is معطل worships nothingness, and the monotheist worships Allah alone

للعلامة الخطابي في الغنية عن الكلام وأهله
فمذهب السلف حق بين باطلين بين باطل التمثيل وباطل التعطيل فالمشبه يعبد صنما والمعطل يعبد عدما والموحد يعبد إله الأرض والسماء ليس كمثله شيء وهو السميع البصير

The ways of the Salaf is true and between two falsehoods, between the falsehood of التمثيل and the falsehood of التعطيل. The one who resembles مشبيه worships an idol, and the one who negates denies معطل worships nothingness, and the monotheist worships Allah, the owner of earth and heaven. There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

The moderation of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah in belief between the misguided sects

Part 1

أُمَّةُ نبينا محمد وسط بين الأُمَم فإنَّ اليهود والنصارى متضادون اليهود جَفَوا في الأنبياء ختى قتلوا مَن قتلوا منهم و النصارى غلوا في عيسى علية السلام، فجعلوه إلها مع الله، و هذا من امثلة تضاذِّهم في الإعتقاد، ومن أمثلة تقابلهم في الاحكام انَّ اليهود لا يؤاكلون الحائض و لا يجالسونها و النصارى بضدِّهم فإنهم يُجامعونها.

The nation of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is in the middle path among the nations, contrasting with the Jews and Christians, who are opposites. The Jews treated their prophets with such hostility that they even killed some of them, while the Christians went to the extreme with Isa (peace be upon him), elevating him to the status of a deity beside Allah. This exemplifies their opposing beliefs. In terms of rulings, the Jews do not eat or sit with menstruating women, whereas the Christians take the opposite stance and even have intercourse during menstruation.

و كما أنَّ هذه الأُمة وسط بين الأُمَم فإنَّ أهل السُنَة و الجَماعة وسط بين فِرَقِ هذه الأمة

Just as this nation follows a middle path among the other nations, Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah represent the middle path among the sects within this nation

Reminder To Fast Day of Ashura

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered fasting on the day of Ashura, the tenth of al-Muharram.
Al-Tirmidhi said, “It is reported from Ibn Abbas that he said to fast on the ninth and tenth of the month and to do so differently from the Jews, and this tradition is the same as was said by Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq.”

Abu Qatadah reported: The Prophet SAW was asked about fasting the day of Ashura and he said, “It will expiate the sins of the past year.”

قال الإمام ابن تيمية

‎ومن كان فيه إيمان وفيه فجور أعطي من الموالاة بحسب إيمانه، ومن البغض بحسب فجوره، ولا يخرج من الإيمان بالكلية بمجرد الذنوب والمعاصي كما يقول الخوارج والمعتزلة.

Imam Ibn Taymiyyah said,

Whoever has faith and immorality is given loyalty according to his faith, and hatred according to his immorality, and he is not removed from faith completely simply because of sins and transgressions, as the Kharijites and Mu’tazilites say.

‎وقال الشيخ صالح الفوزان في أقسام الناس فيما يجب في حقهم من الولاء والبراء: “الناس في الولاء والبراء على ثلاثة أقسام.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan said about the categories of people regarding what is required to be giving to them of loyalty and association and enmity and disassociation: “People are divided into three categories regarding loyalty and enmity.

‎القسم الأول: من يُحَبّ محبّةً خالصة لا معاداة معها، وهم المؤمنون الخلَّص من الأنبياء والصديقين والشهداء والصالحين،

The first category: those who you have pure love without hostility, and they are the sincere believers, including the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous.


‎القسم الثاني: من يبغَض ويعادَى بغضاً ومعاداة خالصين لا محبّة ولا موالاة معهما، وهم الكفار الخلّص من الكفار والمشركين والمنافقين والمرتدين والملحدين.

The second category: those who are hated and antagonized with pure hatred and hostility, without love or loyalty to them, and they are the pure الكفار, polytheists, hypocrites, apostates, and atheists.


‎القسم الثالث: من يُحَبّ من وجهٍ ويبغَض من وجه، فيجتمع فيه المحبّة والعداوة، وهم عصاة المؤمنين يحَبّون لما فيهم من الإيمان، ويبغَضون لما فيهم من المعصية التي هي دون الكفر والشرك،

The third category: He who is loved in one way and hated in a way, in whom love and enmity are combined, and they are disobedient of the believers. They are loved for the faith they have, and hated for the disobedience they have, which is less than disbelief and polytheism.
