GhostNet 1.5 has officially been released!
You can find the updated document here: https://github.com/s2underground/GhostNet
This version is a complete overhaul to fix minor issues on nearly every page, so I did not include a changelog...pretty much everything has had a minor change here and there. The meat of the GhostNet hasn't changed though, all the freqs and procedures are the same as before, with additions.
I hope this version stands for quite a while, but since I'm including a lot of new concepts I expect there to be minor changes in a few months, after we do some testing and figure out what works, and what doesn't. For now, this should get us through the election season, and provide a bit of a comms safety net just in case things get squirrely.
For those that might be new to the world of radio communications, what is the GhostNet?
The GhostNet, while far from perfect, is our working attempt to bring more real-world use to the world of radio. From disaster preparedness to censorship resiliency, radio is one of the last bastions of the technical ability to remain free to speak. While the licensing requirements are very off-putting, listening in to signals is free and can be done by anyone (tutorial below), and every week dozens of people get together to share informational reports from their local area. So check it out and see what information is getting out there. All the necessary tutorials and links are in the thread below:
Here's our introduction video explaining the concepts:
https://youtu.be/Qk7Jlln16EU
Here's our tutorial on Receive-Only JS8Call:
https://youtu.be/SsuzTPHcgDY
Here's our tutorial on Off Grid JS8Call (a supplement to the Receive-Only video):
https://youtu.be/P9sWFryImDo
Even if you have zero desire to get into the world of radio, or if radio stuff seems to be way to complicated (I certainly know how you feel), try going through the process of setting up a Receive-Only arrangement and see what you get. You may be surprised at the information that flows regularly, night and day, without most people ever picking it up.

//The Wire//2200Z October 15, 2024//
//ROUTINE//
//BLUF: CHINESE DRILLS CONTINUE AROUND TAIWAN. HELENE RECOVERY COMPLICATED BY WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS. WAR IN LEBANON CONTINUES.//
-----BEGIN TEARLINE-----
-International Events-
Far East: China continues to conduct large scale military drills in the waters around Taiwan, with over 153x PLA aircraft and 12x PLAN vessels conducting maneuvers throughout the region.
Middle East: The war continues in Lebanon, with Israeli strikes within Beirut increasing in intensity over the past few days. Tensions with UNIFIL have continued to grow as well, as Israel has ordered United Nations peacekeepers to leave their positions along the Blue Line and in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah attacks continue in semi-random fashion, though Hezbollah has increased the targeting of areas deeper inside Israel.
-HomeFront-
North Carolina: As cold weather sweeps into the storm-damaged areas in the western part of the state, the need for cold-weather supplies has become more urgent. Snowfall has been reported at higher elevations throughout the Appalachian mountains, adding in more complications throughout an already logistically-challenging situation.
-----END TEARLINE-----
Analyst Comments: Regarding Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, slow progress is being made. Improvisation and flexibility have been key throughout this crisis, along with conflict resolution skills for the minor-to-moderate personnel challenges that have arisen. Following the mainstream media reporting on the β€œmilitia” concerns, it has become even more obvious that these claims are false. Though the overall situation is tough to judge, at the absolute most, a few locals have expressed dissatisfaction in a few isolated situations. Some people have become frustrated with the disaster tourists seeking out the best photos for Instagram on their property, and other locals have had some limited problems with looting or general crime. However, as of now, absolutely zero primary source reporting has indicated that locals are preventing recovery efforts. Though details are very hard to verify, this rhetoric probably spun out of hand due to a single report, or some vague threats posted online. A grand game of telephone occurs, one circular report becomes many different reports, and eventually someone in an authoritative position hears it, and it becomes gospel. This, combined with many non-military federal resources looking for every opportunity to not do their job, probably resulted in these rumors reaching a national level, despite the purely nonsensical nature of the claims, and the complete absence of anyone in a position of authority actually wanting to verify any of this.
Aside from the occasional bickering or heated moments among volunteers and varying local agencies, for the most part everyone is working together with minimal conflict. As one might expect, most of the conflict that has arisen has originated from FEMA employees, who have largely not been seen in most of the hardest-hit areas, and the one’s who have been seen haven’t been doing much other than walking around with a clipboard in hand. Nearly 100% of the humanitarian aid continues to come from private citizens, local authorities, and state resources (to smooth out larger-scale aviation logistics).

Hey everyone, just a heads up, I did a surprise interview for the TREX Talk podcast πŸ‘

We talked quite a bit about emergency preparedness topics, and I thought it was a great chance to talk about some of the things we've all kind of been preparing for. Special thanks to Isaac for making this happen!

Here's the raw link to the video version: https://youtu.be/QqtAXP9RYs8

And here's the main TREX Talk channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TREXTALK

The audio-only version of the podcast is also available on pretty much any podcasting platform.

We need to stop thinking along the lines of what the rules allow us to do, but what is theoretically possible. Whenever anyone has any question regarding anything in radio…the first point mentioned is some sort of rule, without fail. This mentality has to stop. We can operate within the parameters of a civilized society just fine, but we also need to reexamine our priorities. Much of the time, there is no conflict with what the rules are, and what capabilities we need. However, Ham Radio culture is becoming a huge barrier to the progress of human communication, and thus myself needing to dedicate as many harsh words to this issue (as soft language has not resulted in the motivation needed to fix these problems). The spirit of radio is to help one another, not to be an elitist club. Ask not whether a technology is allowed by the rules, but rather if that technology will help someone at the end of the day.

Hey everyone, I realized upon reviewing this one that this is probably the spiciest video I’ve done in a while. Didn’t mean for it to be, but I really felt like these things need to be said. I do not want to stoke animosity with the hams doing good work…you guys know who you are. And, you know exactly about the types of hams that I’m talking about.
But more importantly than just me shouting at the internet, this really should be a discussion that is carried forward by others as well. My own opinion is largely unimportant, but if I can start the ball rolling on a larger debate, I think that’s a good idea.We can’t be afraid to talk about these things any longer, especially since a dialog is needed for any solution to be feasible in the future. Hams need to be held accountable for their behavior and for enabling these cultural problems that result in a hesitancy to use emergency services. Every single ham radio operator (or group) knows of a guy in their club or on their local repeater who engages in this type of elitist behavior. Instead of hanging one’s head and saying quietly β€œthat’s just Larry being Larry again”, we need to do more. Exchanging ideas always helps, and I personally look forward to the discourse.
Why is it that radio is treated as a privilege and not a right? Is that mentality (and prior justification) a good fit for today? More broadly, is it Constitutional to license speech?
If licenses were no longer required, but the ham bands were kept for ham use, would the β€˜chaos’ that hams claim would happen, really happen? How has the evolution of CB radio licensing provided an indication of how this might go?
Regarding funding for advocacy, are β€œadvocacy” groups being held accountable? Or are we just getting their newsletter and assuming they are fighting the FCC’s creeping restrictions? How is that really going? Are ham organizations really just taking your money, and carving out FCC rules for their own pet projects, such as getting the FCC to approve encryption on one specific organization’s network, while the rest of us aren’t privy to that rule?
Regarding spectrum management, are the complaints of hams over the years really an accurate picture of what’s going on? Would sheer and utter chaos erupt if we allowed a license-free portion of the HF bands? Are the HF bands not utter chaos at this exact moment, even with licensed use?
I promise that I will have a more coherent (and less angst-inducing) way of opening up this discussion soon. I just felt that time is of the essence, and I have not spoken as directly and firmly (but still respectfully) as I could have. I am all for bringing people together to solve problems, and I think the carrot works vastly better than the stick. But sometimes a line is crossed, and I believe that accepting certain behavior in ham radio world, solely for the purpose of keeping the peace, would infringe on my own core values, which I will not do. My chief concern is not simply with the malign actors within radio, as I said, those are easy to handle. My primary concern is the community that allows that behavior to fester for so long, that it endangers lives. Now that I’ve identified these problems (along with many of you all), I definitely plan to continue to work on solutions that are feasible and help us to use radio to improve the world around us.

As the power outages throughout the southeast continue, I'll be up on GhostNet monitoring for any traffic over the next few days, and I would recommend for avid GhostNet users to do the same if possible.

There are dedicated hurricane/emergency nets that many hams participate in, so I don't want to detract from that official work, however for those who are without power and looking to do something, this is an option. Of course, most people without power probably won't be reading this post, but due to the region-wide nature of this disaster, leaning more on radio may be necessary as cell networks become overloaded. This disaster will take weeks to recover from; this is a long-haul event that a decentralized radio net (like the GhostNet) is precisely designed to help with.

I'm sure a lot of people out there with receive-only setups would really appreciate some traffic on the GhostNet over the next few days. Damage reports, road closures, any information local to an area regarding the hurricane damage would be fantastic. Even words of encouragement can help a lot for people stuck at home for the next few days. So if you're interested, hop on the GhostNet (just like every Thursday night) and see what's going on throughout the region over the next few days.

Hey everyone, just a brief heads up for those who like to use the Kiwix platform, all of the S2 Underground video content is now available on the platform!

For those who aren't familiar with Kiwix, fear not, I will have more to come on this later. The short version is that it's an offline archival platform that allows for storing immense amounts of data offline in an easy to use interface. You can install it on your phone or computer, and download all sorts of data packages, the most popular being an offline copy of Wikipedia.

Well now, all of the S2 Underground Youtube content will be available as a data package. So if you want to hoard almost video I've ever made, here you go! I should note that not every single video is included; the short Wire reports are not going to be included simply because that information is perishable and not really the best fit for long-term, off-grid knowledge archives.

If you'd like to give Kiwix a try, you can get started at this link: https://kiwix.org/en/applications/

Once you install Kiwix, just search for "S2 Underground" and you'll be able to download the data package. If you just want to view or download the raw file, here's the library link: https://library.kiwix.org/viewer#s2underground_en_all_2024-09/index.html

Be advised though, you will need the Kiwix application to view the file anyway, so it's probably best to just download it from within the Kiwix platform itself. But if you wanted to check out what the file looks like beforehand, use the library link posted above!

This file should also update periodically as the scraper pulls new videos from the youtube channel. However, it's not going to be immediate, so all of the content that makes it into the Kiwix Zim file will be stale by a few months. For now, this is a robust, offline archive of the content that might be helpful in the long term. It's just video content for now, and the quality isn't super great due to the extremely amazing compression characteristics of zim files. But it's perfectly usable and small! The size of the file is only a little over 3gb, so you can fit pretty much all S2 Underground videos on your phone, accessible offline until the end of time... How cool is that?

Again, more content to come on this later, just wanted to give a quick notice now for those interested.

Special thanks to my friend Wallace (S2W1) for taking the lead on this, and the Kiwix team for working with us to make this happen! Seriously awesome work!
