It does not take a village to raise a child.

Raising a healthy child takes a parent (at least one, but ideally two) with strong boundaries, integrity, discernment, and the courage to protect the child from the corruption of the village, thereby imbuing in them groundedness, self-responsibility, and individuation, while remaining part of the world and in right relationship with others.

Authentic community can only arise among humans who are differentiated enough to retain the capacity to think independently of the group.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with experiencing pain during birth or intensity. there's nothing wrong with not feeling bliss or ecstasy or pleasure while giving birth.

Regulated midwifery works on exactly the same sentimental principles of coercion, and manipulation, and control, and inverted hierarchies, and normalized abuse as does industrial obstetrics because licensed regulated midwifery is industrial obstetrics.

People assume that becoming a mother automatically reduces a woman's sex drive, kills intimacy, dampens our sexuality, makes us asexual, or that motherhood especially new motherhood and postpartum is somehow neutralizing and a sexually deadening experience. None of this is true.

Pain-free birth IS possible for every woman, but not every woman will choose it—and when we are starting from a place of arguing for our limitations, we diminish the likelihood of even perceiving the options before us.

As confronting (and triggering) as this might be, it is a law of the universe that ultimately, the proof of desire is in the having. If you didn’t have a pain-free, orgasmic birth experience, you didn’t choose it.

In my 20 years of birth-work, I have witnessed babies in the “right” position take ages to be born (along with intense back-pain for the mother), and I’ve seen babies in the “wrong” position pop right out (with no overly-intense back sensations). There is no right or wrong position.

And there is no “right” or “wrong” experience of birth! There is nothing “wrong” with experiencing pain and/or intensity during birth. But I do know that for every woman, pain is not mandatory—it really is optional—no matter what position your baby is in, no matter how special your body happens to be.

A big way, if not the most important way, of dealing with and downgrading risk in birth-work is divesting ourselves of our addiction to drama.

It’s fascinating to see all the ways that we invite drama into our lives, especially in birth-work.

Doulas are, for the most part, women who remain committed to supporting the industrial obstetric system, and who are totally uncomfortable with the idea of stepping into their own power, or supporting mothers to step into theirs.

The doula role was created to fill a void left in the wake of midwifery regulation.

Prior to regulation and state/government legislation there were no “doulas,” because midwives served the role of birth-keeper TO and FOR the mother.

The primary purpose of the doula construct is to soften the optics of obstetrics violation, and to “help” mothers re-frame their experiences of violation by the hands of obstetricians and midwives by rationalizing what was done to them in order to integrate that traumatic abuse into a Stockholm framework of trauma-bondedness and acceptance, if not gratitude towards their abusers.

Doulas are in many ways, the ultimate tools of the system—the low-level “handmaidens” of medical obstetric rape, if you will.

“Homebirth” or “freebirth” doulas, on the other hand, (or doulas who are willing to “risk” their weekend certifications) are just baby authentic midwives who are playing politics, and attempting to navigate the system so as not to draw too much attention to themselves or to trigger potential liability (which I understand, and in some cases, respect)

Ultimately, the term “doula,” has become meaningless, just as “midwife” is meaningless, unless one has a full understanding of allegiance, locus is trust, focus of commitment, “scope of practice” (or, hopefully, lack thereof in favour of true loyalty to the mother), and fundamental framework of integrity.
