Word of the Day: «недавно» (recently)

«Недавно» is an adverb we use to talk about events that happened in the recent past. For example:

This word helps us clarify time frames and make speech more precise.

Verb "помнить" (to remember)

The verb "помнить" in Russian means "to remember" in English. It is used when we talk about knowing or recalling something from the past.

▎Examples of usage:

1. Я помню это место. 
   (I remember this place.) 

   • Here, we are saying that we know this place.

2. Ты помнишь его имя? 
   (Do you remember his name?) 

   • A question about whether you recall the person's name.

3. Она не помнит, где оставила ключи. 
   (She doesn't remember where she left the keys.) 

   • Here, it indicates that she forgot where she put the keys.

4. Мы помним, как хорошо провели лето. 
   (We remember how well we spent the summer.) 

   • Talking about pleasant memories.

▎Use "помнить" when you want to say that you have memories of something or someone!

ЕДУ (yedu) and ИДУ (idu).

🔍 Еду (yedu) — this is the form of the verb "ехать" (yekhat’), which means "to go" by transport. We use it when talking about traveling by vehicle. For example: "Я еду в Москву" (Ya yedu v Moskvu) — "I am going to Moscow." The stress is on the first syllable: Édu.

🚶‍♂️ Иду (idu) — this is the form of the verb "идти" (idti), which means "to go" on foot. We use it when talking about walking. For example: "Я иду в магазин" (Ya idu v magazin) — "I am going to the store." The stress here is also on the first syllable: Ídu.

💡 Remember: "еду" (yedu) — by transport, "иду" (idu) — on foot. The stresses help to understand the meaning!

Useful phrases in a cafe/restaurant

1. Здравствуйте! / Добрый день!

• A formal greeting that will fit in any situation.

2. Можно меню, пожалуйста?

• A polite way to ask for a menu.

3. Что вы порекомендуете?

• It's a good question to get tips from the waiter about popular dishes.

4. Я хочу заказать…

• Use this phrase to start placing an order. For example: "I want to order borscht."

5. Можно мне…?

• A convenient way to ask for something. For example: "Can I have a glass of water?"

6. Это острое?

• If you don't like spicy food, be sure to specify!

7. Можно счет, пожалуйста?

• Polite way to ask for the bill
