Aiding this process of religious identity formation, especially at elite levels, was the energy with which Puranic stories welded together diverse physical temple sites. The result was the creation of what the scholar Diana L. Eck has called a ‘sacred geography,’ with pilgrimage becoming a popular means to experience divinity; a path that did not involve asceticism or monkhood.

Thus, in present-day Kurukshetra, a banyan tree marks the ‘exact spot’ where Krishna in the Mahabharata imparted wisdom to Arjuna, in his great preamble before battle. Chadayamangalam on the west coast is where the vulture Jatayu fell as he tried to prevent the evil Ravana from abducting Rama’s wife in the Ramayana; and once Rama had killed his enemy, it was at Rameswaram on the east coast that he cleansed himself, consecrating a temple.

Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, known for a goddess of tribal origins, was linked to Shakti and cast as the spot where a danta (tooth) from the corpse of Siva’s wife fell as he danced with it in furious agony; her genitals fell in Assam in the north-east, her navel in Tamil country, her hair in Karnataka, a breast in Bihar, and a hand all the way north in Kashmir. A single story, thus, entwined temples across vast reaches, reinforcing the claim of an essential unity.

By encouraging devotees to travel to such sites, not only were they told that they could gain spiritual release, but it also generated a culture of commonality despite different vocabularies, tongues, and histories. Viewed this way, latter-day India’s slogan of ‘Unity in Diversity’ acquires a different origin.

One of my friend, a doctor working in Maharashtra, shared an incident that highlights systemic inefficiencies and ethical dilemmas in public administration. Last month, he raised a complaint about the lack of adequate ambulances in his workplace area .While such complaints usually go unnoticed, this time, local journalists picked up the issue. According to Doctor friend , the journalists had personal grievances with the District Health Officer, which might have persuaded them to highlight the problem. Regardless of the intention, the story got printed, and senior officials finally acted by allocating a new ambulance to the center.

However, what should have been a simple process turned into an elaborate ceremony. A local MLA insisted on inaugurating the ambulance, resulting in a formal event with tents, snacks, flowers, chairs, and other expenses—all funded by public money. Furthermore, this caused unnecessary disruptions for the doctors and other healthcare staff. Such actions reflect how political vanity often overshadows efficient service delivery.

A similar situation occurred in Mirzapur district, where a District Magistrate was transferred for not inviting a local politician to inaugurate a water supply project that had reached a village after years of neglect. While the public lauded her efforts, the politician’s ego over not being included in a symbolic “jal pujan” ceremony led to her transfer.

These instances reflect a significant ethical dilemma in governance—where public interest often takes a backseat to personal and political interests. Administrative efficiency is compromised by the pursuit of symbolic recognition, eroding trust in public institutions.

"Manmohan Singh Was Against Corruption, Always Thought Of Nation": Anna Hazare

Readers Club

27 Dec, 12:49

Throughout history, the rich and the aristocracy always imagined that they had superior skills to everybody else, which is why they were in control. As far as we can tell, this wasn’t true. The average duke wasn’t more talented than the average peasant – he owed his superiority only to unjust legal and economic discrimination. However, by 2100, the rich might really be more talented, more creative, and more intelligent than the slum-dwellers.

Once a real gap in ability opens between the rich and the poor, it will become almost impossible to close it. If the rich use their superior abilities to enrich themselves further, and if more money can buy them enhanced bodies and brains, with time the gap will only widen. By 2100, the richest 1 per cent might own not merely most of the world’s wealth, but also most of the world’s beauty, creativity, and health.

The combination of bioengineering and the rise of AI could lead to a division of humankind into a small class of superhumans and a large underclass of "useless" Homo sapiens. As the masses lose economic importance and political power, the state might lose incentive to invest in their health, education, and welfare, making redundancy dangerous. The future of the masses would depend on the goodwill of a small elite, which could diminish during crises like climate catastrophes.

In countries with strong liberal traditions and welfare-state practices, such as France and New Zealand, the elite might continue to care for the masses even when they are no longer needed. However, in more capitalist countries like the USA, the elite might seize opportunities to dismantle the welfare state. In large developing countries such as India, China, South Africa, and Brazil, losing economic value could lead to skyrocketing inequality.

Summary:

There is no reason to assume that artificial intelligence will gain consciousness, as intelligence and consciousness are distinct. Intelligence is the ability to solve problems, whereas consciousness is the ability to feel emotions such as pain, joy, love, and anger. Humans and other mammals solve problems by feeling, but computers solve problems differently. High intelligence can be achieved without consciousness, much like how airplanes fly faster than birds without feathers. AI may need to analyze human feelings to perform certain tasks but can do so without feelings of its own. While it is not impossible for AI to develop consciousness, we do not know enough about consciousness to be certain. Three possibilities exist:

1. Consciousness is tied to organic biochemistry, making it impossible to create in non-organic systems.
2. Consciousness is linked to intelligence, and computers may develop it upon reaching a certain intelligence threshold.
3. No essential links exist between consciousness and either organic biochemistry or high intelligence, allowing computers to become super-intelligent without consciousness.

Given our limited understanding of consciousness, it seems unlikely that we could program conscious computers soon. Despite AI's immense power, its usage will continue to depend on human consciousness to some extent in the foreseeable future.

When discrimination is directed against entire groups, such as women or Black people, these groups can organize and protest against their collective discrimination. However, an algorithm might discriminate against you personally, and you have no idea why. It could be something in your DNA, personal history, or social media account that the algorithm doesn't like. This individual discrimination is different from collective discrimination, as it targets you specifically, making it difficult to organize with others to protest.

At the highest levels of authority, human figureheads will likely remain, giving the illusion that algorithms are only advisors and that ultimate authority is still in human hands. However, decisions made by leaders will be shaped by AI, reflecting the way AI views the world more than the way humans do. Politicians might find themselves choosing from a menu written by AI, similar to how they currently choose from economic policies shaped by economists, bankers, and business people.

With all due respect, we humbly request that no premature conclusions be drawn regarding the allegations in question. It is imperative to examine all relevant facts and consider the alternate perspective before forming an opinion.

We wish to bring to your attention that Mr. Vikas Dhayal has made baseless claims, and it has been repeatedly observed, in the presence of multiple individuals, that his primary objective appears to be tarnishing the professional reputation of Mr. Rahul Balhara. He has a personal vendetta against Rahul , for which he has repeatedly said " Teri wardi utarwaa duga " (I'll ruin your service career)

Mr. Vikas Dhayal had tested positive for alcohol consumption(which has been proved in his MLC ) . His conduct on the occasion in question, which involved misbehavior where he even showed a weapon .

He has been a habitual offender for gaining fame by using shortcuts and unethical means , some of which include - Giving Fake insider UPSC information and playing with the emotions of innocent aspirants.

He even engaged in an ugly showdown with one of my batchmates on telegram for the purpose of UPSC Result information.

Further, we find it concerning that Mr. Dhayal has chosen to resort to social media platforms to publicize his narrative rather than allowing the appropriate administrative mechanisms to address the issue.

This raises reasonable doubts about his intentions, which appear to include not only defaming an officer but also increasing his social media following through the dissemination of manipulated facts.

Please be assured that the matter will be addressed by the competent authorities, and appropriate action will be taken against the party found to be at fault. However, leveraging public sympathy through distorted representations on social media does not align with the principles of justice and due process.

We trust that this communication will be considered with fairness and objectivity.

Maybe happiness is not about us, as individuals. Maybe it is not something that arrives into us. Maybe happiness is felt heading out, not in. Maybe happiness is not about what we deserve ‘because we’re worth it’. Maybe happiness is not about what we can get. Maybe happiness is about what we already have. Maybe happiness is about what we can give. Maybe happiness is not a butterfly we can catch with a net. Maybe there is no certain way to be happy. Maybe there are only maybes. If (as Emily Dickinson said) ‘Forever – is composed of Nows –’, maybe the nows are made of maybes. Maybe the point of life is to give up certainty and to embrace life’s beautiful uncertainty. ~Matt Haig

Not a single painting was being sold, there was no recognition from anywhere, but the strange thing was that in these conditions he was still happy - happy because what he wanted to paint he has been able to paint. Recognition or no recognition, his work is valuable intrinsically.

By the age of thirty-three he had committed suicide -- not because of any misery, anguish, no, but simply because he had painted his last painting, on which he had been working for almost one year, a sunset. He tried dozens of times, but it was not up to his standard and he destroyed it. Finally he managed to paint the sunset the way he had longed to.

He committed suicide, writing a letter to his brother,
"I am not committing suicide out of despair. I am committing suicide because now there is no point in living -- my work is done. Moreover, it has been difficult to find ways of livelihood.livelihood. But it was okay because I had some work to do, some potential in me needed to become actual. It has blossomed, so now it is pointless to live like a beggar.

"Up to now I had not even thought about it, I had not even looked at it. But now that is the only thing. I have blossomed to my utmost; I am fulfilled, and now to drag on, finding ways of livelihood, seems to be just stupid. For what? So it is not a suicide according to me, but just that I have come to a fulfillment, a full stop, and joyously I am leaving the world. Joyously I lived, joyously I am leaving the world."

Now, almost a century afterwards, each of his paintings is worth millions of dollars.

There are only two hundred paintings available. He must have painted thousands, but they have been destroyed; nobody took any note of them.

Now to have a Van Gogh painting means you have an aesthetic sense. His painting gives you recognition. The world never gave any recognition to his work, but he never cared. And this should be the way to look at things. You work if you love it. Don't ask for recognition. If it comes, take it easily; if it does not come, do not think about it. Your fulfillment should be in the work itself. And if everybody learns this simple art of loving his work, whatever it is, enjoying it without asking for any recognition, we would have a more beautiful and celebrating world. As it is, the world has trapped you in a miserable pattern: What you are doing is not good because you love it, because you do it perfectly, but because the world recognizes it, rewards it, gives you gold medals, Nobel prizes.

“People are strange. They’ll lose it over a lukewarm coffee, a slow driver, a delayed train. But when it comes to the big stuff—the years slipping by, the dreams they let rot—they barely flinch. Maybe it’s just easier to throw a fit over the small stuff, vent it out where it’s safe. Because what’s the alternative? Admit the train delay isn’t the real problem? Realise you don’t even want to be on that train, that you’re headed in entirely the wrong direction? Because that’s the truth, isn’t it? Half of us are so busy raging at the small stuff, we never stop to see we’re not even on the right track.”

Lady Doctors: The Untold Stories of India’s First Women in
Medicine’ review: Freedom from patriarchy

India’s first women doctors pushed back against social ills and took
the lonely road to fight for the right to work as individuals in their
chosen fields. (stories of Anandibai Joshi, Kadambini Ganguly,
Rukhmabai Raut, Muthulakshmi Reddy, Mary Poonen Lukose, and
Haimabati Sen
)
A crater on Venus is named after India’s first woman doctor, Anandibai Joshi, but not a
single road or school in India
, rues Kavitha Rao in the introduction to Lady Doctors in which
she documents the lives and work of the first women doctors of the country, forgotten by
history. Starting from the late 19th century when the prevailing view was that education of
women brought nothing but shame on the family, the stories weave a rich pattern depicting
the struggles these women had to overcome to carve out their careers, and in the process,
build a path for other women to follow.

Buddha said there was no way by which one could avoid death & suffering.

Some would look at this as a macabre approach to life. However suffering in varying capacities is ubiquitous- the degrees, ofcourse vary.

The happiest people you see/ know have suffered. But life is a combination of the ebb & flow. The down & up. The choppy & smooth sailing.

The only hack to it is being aware that it's the cycle of life and you gotta keep swimming!

It is what it is & it will pass. (It's what I say to myself when I find myself in an unfavourable circumstance.) ... & it helps :)

It is not the whole truth, it's part of the truth.

We run after happiness, ignoring all the other emotions.
But the reality is that growth happens when we finally face what we've been ignoring.
Khushi' is just one colour of the full picture.

Sometimes life let you paint happiness, and sometimes you have to paint the hardship.

Real contentment lies in painting both the colours with the same grace, balance comes from accepting this truth.

Nexus…
History is not just shaped by material interests and power struggles ,it is also shaped by intersubjective stories hence we can avert conflict and make peace by talking to people, changing stories in which we and they believe or coming up with a new story.
Telling truth is not always a way to produce order. E= mc^2 explains a lot about universe but it can't help unite people to sacrifice for their nation.Fiction unites because it represents truth in a simple and malleable way. Truth is painful and disturbing, is not malleable but fiction can be twisted here and there.Truth can be good for scientific or spiritual progress but is not a good political winning strategy. An Israeli politician cannot get many votes by telling people how many Palestini civilians they killed but will get a lot of votes by reminding people of glorious Jewish history.
Plato in republic imagined that constitution of an utopian state will be based on a noble lie- so that social order is maintained , loyalty remains intact and nobody questions the constitution. As per him citizens should be told that they are born out of the land of the nation they are born in ,to ensure loyalty. While Plato's utopia never realised this technique has been used by a lot of politicians.Notwithstanding Plato's Noble lie we should not conclude that all politicians are liars

How Security Forces Used Biscuits To Eliminate Lashkar-E-Taiba Commander In Srinagar

The anti-terror operation that led to the elimination of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the role of a key ammunition- Biscuits! Senior officials revealed that this simple snack played a crucial role in mitigating a significant challenge during the mission against Usman, who armed with AK-47 pistol. The challenge were the stray dogs.

Usman was killed on Saturday after a day-long encounter in the densely populated Khanyar locality of downtown Srinagar, marking the first major gunfight in the summer capital in over two years. The operation was a collaborative effort between local police and the Central Reserve Police Force.

The presence of stray dogs, whose barking risked alerting the terrorist, was major concern for the security forces during the operation. To address this, search teams were equipped with biscuits to pacify the dogs as they approached their target, illustrating the lengths to which the authorities were willing to go to ensure the mission's success.
The entire operation was initiated before pre-dawn prayers, with forces cordoning off a cluster of 30 homes.

As the standoff escalated, Usman, armed with pistol, and numerous grenades, engaged in fierce gunfire with the security personnel. After several hours of intense gunfire, Usman was neutralised.

This video talks about how guns have evoluted.
Why am I sharing it ?
This will tell you how war maximised the innovation, which ultimately came to civilian life as well.

Like all the variables are discussed how, as to how and why a power came into prominence, and why one eclipsed, guns played a very crucial role in it.

How wars fought over generations helped forging ahead the human enterprise, that's what you will deduce from this.

Do watch it fellas.

-Agency problem : when there is misalignment between incentives of decision makers(agents) and those affected by decisions( principals)—> leads to fragility in finance, politics, business, et cetera.

In modern systems, decision makers often do not bear the full consequences of risk. They lack skin in the game(Individuals are not personally accountable for decisions ).
Agency problems arises When agents such as executive, politicians or professionals do not have enough skin in the game allowing them to take higher risk without personal consequences, if things go wrong .example, CEO gets large bonus when company performs will, but no consequences when it fails.

-Agency problem makes system fragile. Those in power are incentivised to maximise short-term gains without considering long-term risk of well-being - this disconnect between those who bear consequences and those who make decisions leads to hidden risk that accumulate over time, example politicians making law benefiting small group of population .

As the agent is shielded from consequences, it is more likely to engage in risk or unethical behaviour. Example : bailout in financial sector is an agency problem ,it leads to loss of tax payers money(they were not responsible for down slide of the financial institution)

In short : “downside is socialised , while upside is privatised”

Kukur Tihar - Day of the dogs 🐕🐩🐶🐾

Nepalese Hinduism is unique in dedicating the second day of Tihar (Diwali), Kukur Tihar, to the worship of dogs.

On this day, dogs are celebrated in the country. Both strays and pets are adorned with flower garlands and offered food as a part of the festival. Gulal or tilak are applied on their foreheads marking the festival during a ceremonial puja (prayers). They are then treated to milk, eggs, meat or whatever be their likings.

In the Rigveda, one of Hinduism's most ancient texts, Samara — the mother of dogs — assists Indra, the ruler of heaven, in retrieving stolen cattle. A dog is also said to guard the gates of the afterlife.

At the close of the Mahabharata, the king of righteousness, Yudhishthira, refuses to enter heaven without his devoted dog. The dog is revealed to represent the concept of dharma, the path of righteousness.
