I will tell you a little story. You have heard the eloquent speaker who has just  finished say, "Let us cease from abusing each other," and he was very sorry  that there should be always so much variance. But I think I should tell you a story which would illustrate the cause of this  variance. A frog lived in a well. It had lived there for a long time. It was born  there and brought up there, and yet was a little, small frog. Of course the evolutionists were not there then to tell us whether the frog lost its eyes or not,  but, for our story's sake, we must take it for granted that it had its eyes, and that
it every day cleansed the water of all the worms and bacilli that lived in it with  an energy that would do credit to our modern bacteriologists. In this way it  went on and became a little sleek and fat. Well, one day another frog that lived in the sea came and fell into the well.

"Where are you from?"
"I am from the sea."

"The sea! How big is that? Is it as big as my well?" and he took a leap from one side of the well to the other.

"My friend," said the frog of the sea, "how do you compare the sea with your  little well?”

Then the frog took another leap and asked, "Is your sea so big?"

"What nonsense you speak, to compare the sea with your well!"

"Well, then," said the frog of the well, "nothing can be bigger than my well;
there can be nothing bigger than this; this fellow is a liar, so turn him out."

That has been the difficulty all the while.  I am a Hindu. I am sitting in my own little well and thinking that the whole  world is my little well. The Christian sits in his little well and thinks the whole  world is his well. The Mohammedan sits in his little well and thinks that is the  whole world. I have to thank you of America for the great attempt you are  making to break down the barriers of this little world of ours, and hope that, in  the future, the Lord will help you to accomplish your purpose.

"Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts" - Buddha

Quotes for UPSC

01 Jan, 09:47

“The weak can never forgive; forgiveness is the attribute of strong”

Once the Buddha was sitting under a tree talking to his disciples when a man came and spat in his face.

Buddha wiped it off and asked the man, “What next? What do you want to say next?” The man was a little puzzled because he himself never expected that when you spit on somebody’s face they would ask, “What next?”

When Buddha did not react or say anything, and just smiled, this man could not sleep the whole night. The next day he came and fell at Buddha’s feet and said, “Please pardon me, I don’t know what I did.”

The anecdote highlights the value of forgiveness, how it can lead to intrinsic transformation, transform hate into love and spread mutual respect.

You may contrast it with feeling of revenge/ consequence of violent actions which are only harmful in the long run. E.g. Honour killings, caste violence etc.

Quotes for UPSC

21 Dec, 18:17

Arjuna asks: "You just advised action, and yet you uphold knowledge of Brahman as the highest form of life. Krishna, if you think that knowledge is better than action, why do you tell me to act?"

[Shri Krishna]: "From ancient times these two systems have come down to us. The Sânkhya philosophers advance the theory of knowledge. The Yogis advance the theory of work. But none can attain to peace by renouncing actions. None in this life can stop activity even for a moment. Nature's qualities [Gunas] will make him act. He who stops his activities and at the same time is still thinking about them attains to nothing; he only becomes a hypocrite. But he who by the power of his mind gradually brings his sense-organs under control, employing them in work, that man is better. Therefore do thou work

Quotes for UPSC

17 Nov, 11:49

Activity is Not the Same as Accomplishment

There is a big difference between activity and accomplishment. This was demonstrated by a French scientist named Fable. He conducted an experiment with processionary caterpillars. Caterpillars follow the one in front of them blindly. Fable arranged them in a circle in a flowerpot so that the lead caterpillar actually wasbehind the last one forming a circle. He put pine needles (food for the caterpillars) in the center of the flowerpot. The caterpillars kept going in a circle in the pot.Eventually, after a week of circling around, they dropped dead of exhaustion andstarvation with food only inches away from them. We need to learn a lesson from thecaterpillars. Just because you are doing something, doesn't mean you are getting anywhere. One must evaluate one's activity in order to have accomplishment.

If we confuse activity with accomplishment, we could be making great time but we won't get anywhere

Quotes for UPSC

08 Nov, 11:13

In South Africa in the early 1990s, a joke was making the rounds: Given the country’s daunting challenges, people had two options, one practical and the other miraculous. The practical option was for everyone to pray for a band of angels to come down from heaven and fix things. The miraculous option was for people to talk with one another until they could find a way forward.

During a robbery in Zimbabwe, the bank robber shouted to everyone in the bank: "Don't move. The money belongs to the State. Your life belongs to you."

Everyone in the bank lay down quietly. This is called the
"Mind Changing Concept" Changing the conventional way of thinking.

When a lady lay on the table provocatively, the robber shouted at her: "Please be civilized! This is a robbery and not a rape!"

This is called "Being Professional" Focus only on what you are trained to do!

When the bank robbers returned home, the younger robber (MBA-trained) told the older robber (who has only completed Year 6 in primary school): "Big brother, let's count how much we got."

The older robber rebutted and said: "You are very stupid.
There is so much money it will take us a long time to count.
Tonight, the TV news will tell us how much we robbed from the bank!"

This is called "Experience." Nowadays, experience is more important than paper qualifications!
After the robbers had left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. But the supervisor said to him: "Wait! Let us take out $10 million from the bank for ourselves and add it to the $70 million that we have previously embezzled from the bank".

This is called "Swim with the tide." Converting an unfavourable situation to your advantage!

The supervisor says: "It will be good if there is a robbery every month."
This is called "Killing Boredom."

Personal Happiness is more important than your job.

The next day, the TV news reported that $100 million was taken from the bank. The robbers counted and counted and counted, but they could only count $20 million. The robbers were very angry and complained: "We risked our lives and only took $20 million. The bank manager took $80 million with a snap of his fingers. It looks like it is better to be educated than to be a thief!"

This is called "Knowledge is worth as much as gold!"

The bank manager was smiling and happy because his losses in the share market are now covered by this robbery.

This is called "Seizing the opportunity." Daring to take risks!

So who are the real robbers here?

_The Story of Vibhishana_

Vibhishana, Ravana's brother, opposed Ravana's evil ways and advised him to return Sita to Rama. When Ravana refused, Vibhishana bravely defected to Rama's side, despite knowing it meant fighting against his own family.

Vibhishana's courage and conviction in standing up against his own brother and joining the side of righteousness ultimately contributed to Ravana's downfall and Rama's victory.

Vibhishana's story showcases the courage to take a stand against evil, even when it means going against one's own kin.
