Trick To Learn Prader Willi Syndrome 📚💯

PW MedEd

10 Jan, 10:55

Solutions

When the response of a receptor is measured by a surface electrode, a positive wave is seen at first which is called a primary evoked potential.
The primary evoked potential is highly specific in its location.
This is followed by a small negative wave which is called a diffuse secondary response.
This response is not localized.

PW MedEd

10 Jan, 10:55

Solutions

The thalamus is called the gateway to the cerebral cortex because all the information that reaches the cortex has to relay at the thalamus.

PW MedEd

10 Jan, 10:49

Solutions

The image shows the procedure of EEG or Electro-encephalogram.
It is used for sleep analysis and also for diagnosis of seizure disorder and epileptiform disorders.
The electrodes on the scalp read surface recordings of dendritic potentials of neurons, instead of the action potential.
EEG measures the sum of postsynaptic potentials of the neurons of the brain and not the action potential of neurons.
Propagated postsynaptic potentials are generated in the dendrites of neurons, which are summated and displayed in the EEG waves.
When a person is lying quietly with eyes closed, alpha waves can be seen on EEG.
EEG involves placing electrodes on the scalp, thus it is a non invasive procedure.

Solutions

- 6-Mercaptopurine inhibits human DNA polymerase and hence is used as an anti-cancer drug.

- Other anti-cancer drugs which inhibit human topoisomerases are Etoposide, adriamycin and doxorubicin.

- Topoisomerases are involved in relief of supercoils caused by helicase during replication.

- Type I topoisomerase causes break in a single strand of DNA without using ATP.

- Type II topoisomerase causes break in both the strands of DNA by using ATP.

- They can break and reseal the strands to relieve torsional strain.

PW MedEd

09 Jan, 10:30

Solutions

- DNA gyrase is type II topoisomerase in bacteria which is involved in relieving supercoils caused by processive unwinding of DNA by helicase during replication.

- It binds tightly to closed circular DNA of bacteria. It makes breaks in both the strands, relieves the supercoil and reseals the nick.

- The process utilizes energy from the hydrolysis of ATP.

- Bacterial DNA gyrase is Target for the actions of a group of antimicrobial drugs called fluoroquinolones. It includes Ciprofloxacin, Gatifloxacin, Norfloxacin etc.

Solutions

The basis of the Paul-Bunnell test for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is heterophile antibodies. Heterophile antibodies have the unique ability to agglutinate shared antigens. In the context of infectious mononucleosis, these antibodies cause the agglutination of sheep erythrocytes.
However, it's important to note that such antibodies can also occur after injections of sera and sometimes even in normal individuals.
To differentiate infectious mononucleosis antibodies, absorption tests can be used. An agglutination titer of 100 or above is suggestive of infectious mononucleosis.
The Weil-Felix reaction is another example of a heterophile agglutination test, based on the shared antigen between typhus rickettsiae and some strains of proteus bacilli. This test is employed for the serodiagnosis of typhus fevers.
Similarly, the Streptococcus MG agglutination test for primary atypical pneumonia and the cold agglutination test for mycoplasmal pneumonia also operate on the principle of heterophile antibodies.

Solutions

High levels of interferon-beta in a patient's plasma are most likely indicative of an infection due to a virus.
Interferon-beta (IFN-β) is a type of interferon, which is a group of signaling proteins released by cells in response to infections, particularly viral infections.
Interferons play a crucial role in the antiviral immune response. They help to inhibit the replication of viruses within infected cells and also stimulate the immune system to combat viral infections.
Among the different types of interferons (IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-γ), IFN-β is particularly associated with the body's response to viral infections.
When a patient's plasma has high levels of IFN-β, it suggests that the patient's immune system is responding to a viral infection, as interferons are typically produced in response to viral pathogens.
