The PFFA is run by a small team of volunteers Vikki, Sam and Zoe. we’ve been here for almost 2 years and the 3 of us recently set up as a Community Interest Company (CIC) so that we can access funding and do more to help our community (that’s you)

We have big plans for 2025 which include gaining funding to set up a community growing project, which we are very excited for.

Last week we submitted that funding application and we should hear within 4 months whether our application has been approved. Yes a whole lot of work does go into putting together a funding application, but it’ll be worth it.

In the meantime we will continue to help more people learn about growing their own food via our memberships.

Whilst you can’t sow much in a January, now is a good time to sow onion seeds. Once they pop up, transfer them out to a greenhouse, growhouse or a safe sheltered place in the garden as they don’t like being warm indoors.

We get asked a lot about what type of compost is best to use. Always homemade when you have a batch ready. In the meantime (until you can make your own) go and seek the advice of your local garden centre as some of the compost for sale at the moment is frankly quite awful! It should be nice and light and fluffy and this video shows how it should look.

Our “office” will be closed for Christmas as our four lovely lady volunteers that run all the admin bits and bobs will be having a two week seasonal break to spend some time with their families, celebrate Christmas and have a well deserved rest.

During a time of re-alignment we’ve been reassessing how we can best help others.

One of the exciting things to happen at the end of 2024, is that the PFFA became a CIC (community interest company). This is one of the most common types of non profit organisations in the UK.

A CIC is a social enterprise that uses its profits and assets for the public good. They exist to benefit the community rather than private shareholders.

CICs are not a charity, but they can apply for funding. They have their own bank account and have more of a business style image.

Watch this space for 2025 being a fabulous year!

Why do we think it’s important to help you grow your own food?

Because the quality of the foods available to us at the supermarket seems to get worse and worse.

Do we really know what has been added or sprayed onto our food and whether it’s safe for us to consume? The long term effects on human and animal health are very unknown, let alone the damage caused to the environment!

We need to become far more aware of what we are eating and the only way to do that is to grow our own food.

Nurture and feed the soil and it will take care of the plants... add as much organic matter as you can to the top layer and the worms will do the rest! Make your own homemade composts, use well rotted animal manures or make your own leaf mold! The soil biome and gut health are linked and good soil will grow you nutrient dense food.

One of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK is the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs.

They are dedicated to young people who have a love for agriculture and rural life. Led by young people, for young people aged 10 to 28 to develop skills, work with local communities, travel abroad and take part in various competitions along with a dynamic social life.

There are 581 young farmers clubs in England and Wales dedicated to supporting young people in agriculture and the countryside.

You could look online and find a club or programme near to you if you are interested in researching this yourself.
