1️⃣ في 6 فبراير في عدن، ناقش مكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة لليمن مع سيدات أعمال من جميع أنحاء اليمن، إلى جانب ممثلين من غرفة تجارة وصناعة عدن، أدوارهن الحيوية في التعافي الاقتصادي وبناء السلام.

1️⃣ On February 6 in Aden, the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen discussed with businesswomen from across Yemen, alongside representatives from the Aden Chamber of Commerce and Industry their indispensable roles in economic recovery and peacebuilding.

2️⃣As part of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) ongoing efforts to collaborate with stakeholders across all sectors for the peace process, this session took place for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to Yemen's economic revival.

التقى المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، اليوم مع كبار المسؤولين العُمانيين ومع محمد عبدالسلام في مسقط، عُمان.

ناقش اللقاء الاعتقال التعسفي الأخير لموظفين إضافيين من الأمم المتحدة، والذي يضاف إلى العديد من الآخرين الذين لا يزالون محتجزين من قبل أنصار الله. وأكد المبعوث الخاص مجددًا الموقف الحازم للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة، مدينًا بشدة هذه الاعتقالات، وداعيًا إلى الإفراج الفوري وغير المشروط عن جميع موظفي الأمم المتحدة المحتجزين، إلى جانب العاملين في المنظمات غير الحكومية الدولية والمحلية، ومنظمات المجتمع المدني، والبعثات الدبلوماسية المحتجزين منذ يونيو 2024، بالإضافة إلى أولئك المحتجزين منذ عامي 2021 و2023.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg met today with senior Omani officials and Mohammad Abdul Salam in Muscat, Oman.

They addressed the recent arbitrary detention of additional United Nations personnel adding to the numerous others already held by Ansar Allah. The Special Envoy reiterated the firm stance of the UN Secretary-General, strongly condemning these detentions and calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained UN staff, along with personnel from international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society, and diplomatic missions held since June 2024, as well as those held since 2021 and 2023.

They also discussed the importance of continued regional deescalation as a way to improve possibilities to return Yemen to a path towards sustainable peace. The Special Envoy remains committed to working with all Yemeni, regional and international stakeholders to ensure progress toward a peaceful and inclusive resolution to the conflict in Yemen.

بيان صادر عن الأمين العام حول احتجاز موظفي الأمم المتحدة في اليمن

إنني أُدين بشدة الاحتجاز التعسفي الذي قامت به سلطات الأمر الواقع الحوثية في 23 كانون الثاني/يناير لسبعة موظفين إضافيين من الأمم المتحدة في المناطق الخاضعة لسيطرتها.

أُطالب بالإفراج الفوري وغير المشروط عن الذين تم احتجازهم يوم الخميس، وكذلك عن موظفي الأمم المتحدة والمنظمات غير الحكومية الدولية والوطنية والمجتمع المدني والبعثات الدبلوماسية المحتجزين تعسفيًا منذ حزيران/يونيو 2024، بالإضافة إلى موظفي الأمم المتحدة المحتجزين منذ عامي 2021 و2023. إن استمرار احتجازهم التعسفي أمر غير مقبول.

Statement by the Secretary General on detention of United Nations personnel in Yemen

I strongly condemn the arbitrary detention by the Houthi de facto authorities on 23 January of seven additional United Nations personnel in areas under their control.

I demand the immediate and unconditional release of those detained on Thursday, as well as the personnel from the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society and diplomatic missions arbitrarily detained since June 2024 and those held since 2021 and 2023. Their continued arbitrary detention is unacceptable.

The personnel of the UN and its partners must not be targeted, arrested or detained while carrying out their duties for the UN for the benefit of the people they serve. The safety and security of UN personnel and property must be guaranteed.

The continued targeting of UN personnel and its partners negatively impacts our ability to assist millions of people in need in Yemen. The Houthis must deliver on their previous commitments and act in the best interests of the Yemeni people and the overall efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.

The United Nations will continue to work through all possible channels to secure the safe and immediate release of those arbitrarily detained. I welcome the collective support of international partners, NGOs and all those working to support the people of Yemen in these efforts.

مكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة يلتقي بوفد سعودي من لجنة التنسيق العسكري لمناقشة الخطوات والمتطلبات اللازمة لوقف إطلاق النار في اليمن

عمان، 24 يناير 2025 – عقد مكتب المبعوث الخاص إلى اليمن إجتماعاً مع ممثلين عن قيادة القوات المشتركة في لجنة التنسيق العسكري في الفترة من 21 إلى 23 يناير في عمان لمناقشة جوانب مختلفة من التخطيط اللازم لتحقيق وقف إطلاق للنار والحفاظ عليه.
يعد الاجتماع جزءًا من جهود مكتب المبعوث الخاص المستمرة في العمل على المسار الأمني. ويأتي هذا الإجتماع بعد اجتماع سابق في ديسمبر من العام الماضي مع ممثلين عن لجنة التنسيق العسكري التابعة للحكومة اليمنية. ومنذ الهدنة التي استمرت ستة أشهر في عام 2022، كانت جهود وفود لجنة التنسيق العسكري، والتي ييسرها مكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة في اليمن، محورية في جهود خفض التصعيد بين الأطراف.

وركزت المناقشات على تبادل وجهات النظر حول السياق الأمني الحالي في اليمن والمنطقة، فضلاً عن الأولويات التي يجب معالجتها قبل الشروع في عملية وقف إطلاق النار بما في ذلك تدابير بناء الثقة بين الأطراف.

The Office of the UN Special Envoy meets with Saudi delegation of the Military Coordination Committee to discuss steps and requirements necessary for a ceasefire in Yemen

Amman, 24 January 2025 - A three-day meeting between the Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen and representatives from the Joint Forces Command in the Military Coordination Committee (MCC) took place from 21 and 23 January in Amman to discuss different aspects of planning needed to achieve and sustain a ceasefire.

The meeting is part of the ongoing engagement by the Office of the Special Envoy on the security track. It follows an earlier meeting in December with representatives from the Government of Yemen’s MCC Representatives. Since the six-months truce in 2022, the efforts of the delegations of the Military Coordination Committee, facilitated by OSESGY, have been pivotal to de-escalation efforts among the parties.

Discussion focused on an exchange of views on the current security context in Yemen and the region as well as the priorities that must be addressed before initiating a ceasefire process including confidence and trust building measures among the parties.

"The Office of the Special Envoy is actively engaging with all actors to lay the groundwork for a ceasefire that is not just a pause in fighting, but a step towards a sustained peace process. We are actively working with all stakeholders to address the necessary requirements for peace and to ensure that future ceasefires will lead to meaningful political dialogue and humanitarian relief," commented Sarhad Fatah, Deputy Head of Mission for Yemen, during the meeting.

The discussions are part of a series of engagements offered to the delegations to the Military Coordination Committee and were facilitated by leading international experts on ceasefire.

وأكد المشاركون أن #اليمن ليس بمعزل عن الديناميكيات الإقليمية ودعوا الأطراف إلى الانخراط في حوار سياسي بنية صادقة لتخفيف معاناة جميع اليمنيين.

وأكد المشاركون أيضاً أن تقلص مساحة المجتمع المدني، إلى جانب الاعتقال التعسفي لممثلي المجتمع المدني والناشطين، يعيق فرص إطلاق مبادرات بناءة بقيادة محلية لحل الصراع. وشجعت العديد من الأصوات الأمم المتحدة والمجتمع الدولي الأوسع على زيارة شبوة ورؤية الوضع على أرض الواقع بشكل مباشر.

Yesterday, @OSE_Yemen held a meeting in Aden with a group of Shabwa-based activists and civil society representatives, as part of the political dialogue series. The meeting touched on the political challenges, security issues, and economic concerns, as well as the potential in the governorate.

The participants highlighted that #Yemen is not isolated from the regional dynamics and called the parties to engage in a political dialogue in good faith to alleviate the suffering of all Yemenis.

The participants also stressed that the shrinking space of the civil society, coupled with the arbitrary detention of civil society actors and activists, hinders the chances of having constructive locally-led initiatives to resolve the conflict. Several voices encouraged the UN and the wider international community to visit Shabwa and see the situation on the ground firsthand.

The participants highlighted that the continued security incidents in some districts have impacted all aspects of life in the governorate, including living conditions, availability of healthcare services, and children’s access to education. The participants urged all the parties, and regional and international actors to respect and protect the rights of all Yemenis, including the most vulnerable and marginalized groups of women, children, and youth.

On the economy, the participants pinpointed that oil exports and natural resources management should be a high priority to address the deteriorating economy, and called for more representation of Shabwanis in the government and equitable sharing of resources.

Today, the Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen held a meeting in Aden with a group of Al Dhalea-based activists and civil society representatives, as part of the political dialogue series. The meeting touched on issues related to the political challenges, security issues, and economic concerns facing the people of #Yemen in general and Al Dhalea in particular and in #Yemen due to the protracted conflict.

Participants stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue that genuinely represents Yemen’s diverse perspectives, including addressing the Southern Question. They also called for stronger representation of women, youth, and civil society in the political process to better address Yemenis’ grievances and avoid risking half solutions that result in further rounds of conflict.

Reoccurring security incidents and subsequent civilian causalities in Al Dhalea were a key concern highlighted during the discussions on the security track. The participants discussed the impact of the deteriorated security conditions and how it hinders means to provide for a dignified life for them and their families, all while holding back windows for economic recovery due to the renewed conflict.

On the economic dimension, the dialogue highlighted the severe challenges posed by inflation, lack of income, unemployment, and the fragmentation of the national currency which is felt hard in Al Dhalea. Participants called for improved governance and accountability to mitigate economic instability and the need for equitable resource distribution and the de-politicization of the economy by all parties. stressing the need for sustainable development as an approach to empower local communities.

On Thursday, the Office of the Special Envoy held a meeting in Aden with a group of Abyan-based political and community activists and civil society representatives, as part of the political dialogue series. Discussions focused on political, economic, and security challenges impacting Yemen and Abyan and advancing pathways to peace.

The participants underscored the need for inclusive dialogues, better representation of southern voices, and engagement to address the Southern question. Calls were made for improving governance to address the overlap of military and political powers, and safeguarding space for civil society’s engagement in the political process.

On security, participants raised alarm over ongoing clashes, and lack of accountability for security violations. They called for comprehensive reforms to address the proliferation of armed groups and to ensure civilian protection. The participants highlighted that presence of Al-Qaeda and extremist groups is a political phenomenon rather than a reflection of the society’s culture.

Discussions also focused on economic issues, including inflation, unemployment, and the impact of currency fragmentation. Participants called for unified financial systems, enhanced governance, and localized development to respond to Abyan's economic decline. The participants also stressed the urgent need for reconstruction and equitable resource distribution to support host communities and ease tensions with displaced populations.

Yesterday, the Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen held a meeting in Aden with a group of Lahj-based political and community activists and civil society representatives, as part of the political dialogue series. Discussions focused on political, economic, and security challenges impacting Yemen and Lahj and advancing pathways to peace.

During the discussions, the participants raised concerns about ongoing violence in frontline areas. They also emphasized the need for fostering inclusive political participation and addressing the unique vulnerabilities of women affected by conflict.

On economic issues, participants highlighted the necessity of sustainable development projects, better utilization of local expertise and resources, and greater transparency in distributing international aid. They called for using localized approaches in reconstruction and development efforts.

Some of the participants shared examples of local mediation efforts and called for trust-building and accountability measures between security forces and communities and ending practices like arbitrary detentions and raids on civilians. Ensuring inclusivity and transparency in security reforms was emphasized as essential for lasting peace.

Yesterday, the Office of the Special Envoy met in #Aden with a group of political and community activists and civil society representatives based in Aden governorate, as part of the political dialogues series held by the Office to advance Yemen's peace process. During the meeting, the Office of the Special Envoy provided a briefing on the Office's work on the security, economic and political tracks in light of the current regional situation.

The participants stressed inclusivity in peace processes and fair representation, highlighting concerns about the uneven distribution of economic benefits in government-controlled areas and the need for broader consultation on the roadmap. Participants also suggested utilizing phased approaches for economic measures and stressed the importance of local contexts for the ceasefire. Discussions also highlighted the detentions against civil society actors by Ansar Allah, and other human rights violations committed during the conflict against civilians in Yemen, urging for their release and securing contact with their families.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes meetings in Riyadh

Amman, 14 January 2025 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded a visit to Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he met with Yemen’s Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Mubarak and Foreign Minister Shayea Al-Zindani, as well as with senior Saudi officials and the diplomatic community.

Discussions focused on the developments in Yemen and the region and its impact on the Yemeni peace process. The Envoy briefed on his latest engagements and the need for immediate de-escalation and focus on constructive dialogue to pave the way for a Yemeni-owned political process. Mr. Grundberg stressed that the roadmap remains a viable path towards a nationwide ceasefire, addressing critical economic and humanitarian measures and initiating a political process. The discussions also centered on the economic challenges and the need for collaboration among the parties to take steps toward stabilizing the economy and easing the hardships of Yemeni people.

“We must grasp every opportunity there is to provide for a peaceful and stable future for Yemenis. The status quo is not sustainable and all actors must move away from a war-centered mindset to a peace-centered one”, said Mr. Grundberg.

In a meeting with the ambassadors of the permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5), the Envoy thanked the P5 for their continuious support of his efforts and stressed that the unity of the Council is paramount to achieve a way forward for a peaceful and comprehensive resolution of the conflict.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes meetings in Iran

Amman, 13 January 2025 - UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded today a visit to Iran’s capital Tehran, during which the resumption of a Yemeni-owned political process under the auspices of the United Nations was in focus. In Tehran, the Envoy met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and other senior Iranian officials.

Emphasizing the need to provide adequate political space to move forward with the Roadmap, the Envoy expressed his serious concern over the broader regional escalation involving Yemen and its adverse impact on the mediation environment. He underlined the importance of immediate de-escalation for the benefit of the Yemeni people. He discussed concrete de-escalation measures on the military, economic and humanitarian issues that could bring tangible positive results and signal a genuine engagement for peace.

“It is now more urgent than ever to provide Yemen with concerted and unified regional and international support to overcome the complex regional dynamics, grasp the opportunities for peace and resume constructive dialogue that can lead to a sustainable political resolution of the conflict”, noted Mr. Grundberg.

In all his meetings, the Envoy briefed on the UN’s efforts for the immediate and unconditional release of the arbitrarily detained UN, NGO, diplomatic missions and civil society personnel by Ansar Allah. He requested Iran’s support towards those efforts noting that the detentions are against international law and severely impact the United Nation’s ability to deliver much needed humanitarian aid in Yemen.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes visit to Sana'a

Amman, January 9, 2025 — The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to Sana’a. He held discussions with senior political and military officials to renew engagement on the political process, focusing on addressing challenges and exploring possibilities for advancing peace within the region’s complex context.
During his meetings, Special Envoy Grundberg stressed the importance of national and regional de-escalation to foster an environment conducive to dialogue. He urged the need to agree on concrete actions to pave the way forward for a political process to achieve sustainable peace and stability across Yemen. The discussions also highlighted the importance of taking steps to address economic challenges and improve living conditions, while simultaneously advancing preparations for a ceasefire – critical components of the road map and reaching a political resolution that meets the aspirations of Yemenis.
“I am determined to safeguard the progress made to date on the roadmap and keep focus on the prospects for peace in Yemen,” said Grundberg.
Discussions on the conflict-related detainees file built on the progress made during negotiations held in Oman in July 2024. The Special Envoy emphasized that the file is vital for confidence building between the parties and advancing previous commitments. He underscored the importance of prioritizing this humanitarian issue as a step toward fostering trust that can help enable broader agreements and signal commitment to the peace process.
The Special Envoy started his visit at the home of the family of his colleague who has been arbitrarily detained by Ansar Allah since June 2024. He expressed his deepest compassion for what they have been enduring during this difficult period and offered his support. Grundberg updated the family on the UN efforts to secure the release of all arbitrarily detained personnel. He also expressed solidarity with the families of the other detainees, acknowledging their shared anguish and the urgent need for their loved ones' release.
In all his discussions, the Special Envoy strongly urged Ansar Allah to release immediately and unconditionally the detained personnel from the UN, NGOs, civil society, and diplomatic missions. He echoed the Secretary General’s message that the arbitrary detentions are unacceptable and constitute a violation of international law.
“We must protect the role of civil society and humanitarian personnel. They make vital contributions to peace and rebuilding Yemen,” stated the Special Envoy.

وصل المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة، هانس غروندبرغ، إلى صنعاء اليوم عقب اجتماعاته في مسقط بسلطنة عمان. وتأتي زيارته في إطار جهوده المستمرة لحث أنصار الله على اتخاذ إجراءات ملموسة وجوهرية لدفع عملية السلام إلى الأمام. كما أنها جزء من جهوده المستمرة لدعم إطلاق سراح المعتقلين تعسفياً من موظفي الأمم المتحدة والمنظمات غير الحكومية والمجتمع المدني والبعثات الدبلوماسية. ويخطط المبعوث لعقد سلسلة من الاجتماعات الوطنية والإقليمية في الأيام المقبلة في إطار جهود الوساطة التي يبذلها.

Following his meetings in Muscat, Oman, the UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg arrived in Sana’a today. His visit is part of his ongoing efforts to urge for concrete and essential actions by Ansar Allah for advancing the peace process. It is also part of his continuing efforts to support the release of the arbitrarily detained UN, NGO, civil society and diplomatic mission personnel.

The Envoy plans to conduct a series of national and regional meetings in the coming days under his mediation efforts.

وتأتي الغارات الجوية اليوم بعد نحو عام من الأعمال التصعيدية التي قام بها الحوثيون في البحر الأحمر والمنطقة والتي تهدد المدنيين والاستقرار الإقليمي وحرية الملاحة البحرية.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General –on Yemen

The Secretary-General is gravely concerned about intensified escalation in Yemen and Israel. Israeli airstrikes today on Sana’a International Airport, the Red Sea ports and power stations in Yemen are especially alarming. The airstrikes reportedly resulted in numerous casualties including at least three killed and dozens more injured. 
 
A United Nations Humanitarian Air Service crew member was also injured when the airport was hit. A high-level UN delegation, headed by World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was at the airport when the strikes occurred. The delegation had just concluded discussions on the humanitarian situation in Yemen and the release of UN and other detained personnel.
  
Today’s airstrikes follow around a year of escalatory actions by the Houthis in the Red Sea and the region that threaten civilians, regional stability and freedom of maritime navigation.
  
The Secretary-General emphasizes that international law, including humanitarian law as applicable, must be respected at all times; and he appeals to all to respect and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Humanitarian relief personnel must not be targeted and must be respected and protected at all times.
 
The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the risk of further escalation in the region and reiterates his call for all parties concerned to cease all military actions and exercise utmost restraint. He also warns that airstrikes on Red Sea ports and Sana’a airport pose grave risks to humanitarian operations at a time when millions of people are in need of life-saving assistance. Further escalation in the region also continues to undermine the mediation efforts led by the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen Hans Grundberg to reach a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Yemen.

The Secretary-General is following with grave concern reports of Israeli airstrikes earlier today in and around the ports of Hudaydah, Salif and Ra’s Isa and on power stations in Sana’a in Yemen. He is also deeply concerned over the concurrent launch of ballistic missiles by the Houthis toward Israel that hit and badly damaged a school in central Israel.
Initial reports indicate civilian casualties, including nine reportedly killed and three injured, and considerable damage to the Red Sea ports that will lead to the immediate and significant reduction in port capacity.
Today’s airstrikes follow around a year of escalatory actions by the Houthis in the Red Sea and the region that threaten civilians, regional stability and freedom of maritime navigation.
The Secretary-General recalls that all parties are to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law and to respect and protect civilians as well as civilian infrastructure.
The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the risk of further escalation in the region and continues to urge all to exercise utmost restraint. These actions also undermine the mediation efforts led by Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to reach a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Yemen.

مكتب المبعوث الأممي الخاص الى اليمن يختتم اجتماعات حول تخطيط وإدارة عمليات وقف إطلاق النار

خلال الأسبوع الماضي، عقد مكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن اجتماعاً مع ممثلين عن الحكومة اليمنية ضمن لجنة التنسيق العسكرية في عمّان ، الأردن. واستمر اللقاء ثلاثة أيام بهدف مناقشة عمليات التخطيط وإدارة اتفاقيات وقف إطلاق النار وما يتبعها من ترتيبات أمنية انتقالية.
وفي الفترة من 10 إلى 12 ديسمبر، استعرض المشاركون نماذج من حول العالم لاتفاقيات وقف إطلاق النار، وناقشوا مدى إمكانية تطبيقها في سياق وقف إطلاق نار شامل مستقبلي في اليمن. وشكّل النقاش منصة مهمة لتبادل الأفكار حول قضايا محورية، مثل أنواع وقف إطلاق النار المختلفة، وعمليات التصميم والتخطيط، وآليات التفاوض ذات الصلة. كما تلقى المشاركون إحاطات تفصيلية حول خيارات مراقبة وقف إطلاق النار وآليات التحقق والإشراف، وناقشوا الدروس المستفادة من الهدنة في اليمن.
وأكد هانس غروندبرغ، المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن، أن "وقف إطلاق النار خطوة ضرورية لإعادة بناء الثقة والتحرك نحو حل مستدام للصراع. وتضع مثل هذه اللقاءات الأساس لتهيئة الظروف اللازمة لوقف إطلاق النار وتحقيق سلام دائم في اليمن".
جاء هذا الاجتماع استكمالاً لورش العمل السابقة التي نظمها المكتب خلال عام 2023، ومواصلة لجهود ومساهمات وفود لجنة التنسيق العسكرية على مدار العامين الماضيين.
وأوضح المستشار العسكري الرئيسي للمبعوث الأممي، أنتوني هايوارد، بعد الاجتماع: "توفر هذه التبادلات منصة مهمة للتفكير في أمثلة وقف إطلاق النار العالمية مع معالجة الاحتياجات والأولويات الفريدة للسياق في اليمن. إن الإعداد والتخطيط الفعال لوقف إطلاق النار المستدام يشكل خطوة مهمة نحو تحقيق السلام والاستقرار الدائمين في اليمن".

The Office of the Special Envoy concludes meetings on ceasefire planning and management

A three-day meeting between the Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen and representatives from the Government of Yemen in the Military Coordination Committee took place last week in Amman to discuss the planning and management of ceasefires and transitional security arrangements.
From 10 to 12 December, participants reflected on global examples of ceasefires and explored their relevance for a future nationwide ceasefire in Yemen. The forum allowed for an exchange of views on key issues, such as different types of ceasefires, the designing and planning process, and ceasefire negotiations. In addition, participants were briefed on monitoring and verification options and oversight mechanisms, and they discussed lessons learned from the Yemeni truce.
"A ceasefire is a necessary step to rebuild trust and move towards a sustainable resolution of the conflict. This engagement lays the groundwork for establishing the necessary conditions for a ceasefire and achieving a lasting peace in Yemen." underlined Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen.
The meeting builds on previous workshops convened by the office in 2023 as well as work and input from the Military Coordination Committee delegations over the past two years.
“These exchanges provide an important platform to reflect on global ceasefire examples while addressing the unique needs and priorities of the Yemeni context,” explained the UN Envoy’s Principal Military Adviser, Antony Hayward, after the meeting. “Effective preparation and planning for a sustainable ceasefire is an important step towards achieving lasting peace and stability in Yemen”.
The discussions were facilitated by leading international experts on ceasefire and are part of a series of engagements offered to the delegations to the Military Coordination Committee.

In his latest briefing to the UN Security Council, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, highlighted ongoing challenges and steps forward in Yemen and the broader Middle East. Grundberg acknowledged the immense turmoil across the region, emphasizing the need for stabilization and reflecting on past positive developments in Yemen, such as the UN truce and prisoner exchanges. He urged Yemeni parties to engage in the discussions to reach a roadmap for peace, stressing the urgency of action to alleviate suffering and promote economic stability.

Grundberg noted that six months have passed since the arbitrary detentions of dozens working for the United Nations, NGOs, civil society and others by Ansar Allah, noting violations of human rights and urging their immediate and unconditional release. He stressed the economic crisis in Yemen, emphasizing the worsening situation due to unpaid public salaries and inflation, and called for cooperation on the economy for the benefit of all Yemenis.

Security issues in the region, including threats in the Red Sea and attacks involving various nations, were noted as complicating mediation efforts. Grundberg highlighted the fragility of the situation across Yemen's frontlines, with recent violent incidents underscoring the need for a ceasefire.

The Special Envoy stressed the importance of inclusivity and the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, noting efforts to foster dialogue among Yemeni political parties and support for Yemeni civil society and human rights defenders. He concluded by calling for continued international support and unity to achieve a sustainable, inclusive and just peace in Yemen.

يجدد الأمين العام دعوته إلى الإفراج الفوري وغير المشروط عن العاملين في المجال الإنساني الذين تم احتجازهم بصورة تعسفية من قبل الحوثيين. فقد مرت ستة أشهر منذ احتجاز أكثر من 50 موظفاً من الأمم المتحدة والمنظمات غير الحكومية الدولية والوطنية والمجتمع المدني والبعثات الدبلوماسية، إضافة إلى أربعة موظفين في الأمم المتحدة محتجزين منذ عامي 2021 و2023.

وإذ يدرك الأمين العام الأمين العام بالإفراج مؤخراً عن موظف بالأمم المتحدة واثنين من العاملين في المنظمات غير الحكومية، يذكّر بأن الاحتجاز التعسفي المستمر لعشرات الموظفين الآخرين أمر غير مقبول ويعّد انتهاكاً للقانون الدولي.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General – on the detention of United Nations and humanitarian personnel in Yemen

The Secretary-General renews his call for the immediate and unconditional release of the humanitarian personnel arbitrarily detained by the Houthis. It has been six months since the detention of more than 50 personnel from the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society and diplomatic missions, in addition to four other UN personnel detained since 2021 and 2023.

The Secretary-General acknowledges the recent release of one UN staff member and two NGO personnel but recalls that the continued arbitrary detention of dozens of others is unacceptable and constitutes a violation of international law.

These detentions threaten the safety of humanitarian personnel and significantly impair efforts to assist millions of people in need. These actions are inconsistent with genuine engagement in peace efforts.

The United Nations, NGOs and other relevant international partners are working through all possible channels and authorities to secure the immediate release of those arbitrarily detained.

Yesterday the office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen participated at the 7th #Feminist Summit in Aden, organized by the Wogod foundation for Human Security, highlighting women's vital role in peace and security in Yemen and urging unified efforts to advance UNSCR 1325 and the 2020-2023 National Action Plan.

Speaking at the summit, Deputy Head of Mission Mr Sarhad Fatah stressed the urgent need to address the challenges Yemeni women face in leadership & decision-making roles.

Women in Yemen are faced with reduced opportunities that hinder their full participation in humanitarian, political, security, & economic fields. The Special office will remain supportive to an inclusive peace process and elevate women’s voices.

اجتمع المبعوث الأممي هانس غروندبرغ يوم أمس في الرياض مع محمد آل جابر، سفير المملكة العربية السعودية لدى اليمن و بقائد القوات المشتركة الفريق الركن فهد بن حمد السلمان، وجهات دولية، بمن فيهم سفراء الدول الخمس دائمة العضوية لدى مجلس الأمن . ركّزت المناقشات على الحاجة إلى خفض التصعيد والالتزام الموحد بتعزيز عملية سلام جامعة بقيادة اليمنيين.

شدد غروندبرغ على ضرورة معالجة الأزمة الاقتصادية في اليمن، مؤكداً على أهمية اتخاذ تدابير تدعم التعافي، وتحسين سبل عيش اليمنيين، وتعزيز حلول اقتصادية مستدامة.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, met yesterday in Riyadh with Mohammed Al-Jaber, the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Lt. Gen. Fahd bin Hamad Al-Salman, Joint Forces Commander, and members of the international community, including the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the security council. Discussions focused on the need for de-escalation and a unified commitment to advancing an inclusive Yemeni peace process.

Grundberg highlighted the urgency of addressing the economic crisis in Yemen, emphasizing measures that support recovery, improve livelihoods for all Yemenis, and advance sustainable economic solutions.

The Special Envoy further updated on the efforts to release the UN, NGO, civil society, and diplomatic personnel arbitrarily detained by Ansar Allah and called for sustained support from regional and international partners for their release.

قدم المبعوث الأممي هانس غروندبرغ اليوم إحاطة لمجلس الأمن، تناول فيها التصعيد العسكري المتزايد في الشرق الأوسط، مشيراً إلى أن: " أن اليمن جزء من هذا التصعيد، ويواجه خطر الانزلاق بشكل أعمق".

واستعرض المبعوث الخاص لمجلس الأمن الهجمات التي شنتها أنصار الله على إسرائيل والبحر الأحمر، وكذلك الغارات الجوية التي نفّذتها الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل في اليمن. وقال: " هذا التصعيد الانتقامي يهدد آمال السلام والاستقرار و يُشغل التركيز بعيداً عن الحاجة الملحة لمعالجة الأزمة الداخلية في اليمن".

أكد غروندبرغ أن مساحة مشاركة الشعب اليمني في بناء السلام تتعرض للتضييق، من خلال الاعتقالات التعسفية، والتهديدات بالقتل، والترهيب، خاصة في المناطق الخاضعة لسيطرة أنصار الله. ودعا أنصار الله إلى الإفراج الفوري عن جميع المعتقلين تعسفياً، بما في ذلك 17 من موظفي الأمم المتحدة. وأضاف: " أعوّل على دعم هذا المجلس في إيصال هذه الرسالة الواضحة".

Today, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg briefed the Security Council, addressing the intensifying military escalation in the Middle East noting, “Yemen is part of this escalation and risks being further dragged in.”

The Special Envoy briefed on attacks by Ansar Allah to Israel and the Red Sea and US-led and Israeli airstrikes in Yemen. “This cycle of retaliation is jeopardizing hopes for peace & stability, distracts from the urgent need to address Yemen’s own internal crisis”, he said.

Grundberg emphasized that the Yemeni people’s space for meaningful engagement and peacebuilding is under attack, with arbitrary detentions, death threats, and intimidation, especially in areas controlled by Ansar Allah. He called on Ansar Allah to immediately release all arbitrarily detained individuals, including 17 United Nations personnel. “I am counting on the support of this Council in sending this clear message,” he said.

Grundberg reaffirmed that a peaceful resolution for Yemen is the most viable way forward and an achievable one. He urged sustained and unified international support towards that goal.
Grundberg stressed that the path to peace is not just an aspiration, as he outlined three essential elements for moving forward. First, the parties have committed to establish a roadmap involving a nationwide ceasefire, addressing humanitarian and economic needs, and preparing for an inclusive political process. These commitments remain vital building blocks for peace in Yemen.

On the military front, there is relative calm along the frontlines and communication with senior military leadership continues. Third, on the economic front, technical-level options have been identified, and efforts are underway to persuade the parties that economic collaboration is essential for stability. Grundberg underscored the urgent need for cooperation, urging the parties to demonstrate the necessary will and prioritize the needs of Yemenis.

Grundberg marked the anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security by acknowledging the profound burden that Yemeni women continue to bear in the conflict, commending their bravery. He noted that Yemeni women have led peacebuilding efforts for years and called on all parties to guarantee that women are empowered to influence the decisions needed to create lasting peace in Yemen.

Grundberg urged the parties to show their commitment to peace through concrete actions, including the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained individuals, and emphasized the need for unity of purpose. He reiterated that, despite regional conflict, peace in Yemen is still possible.

Addressing the Council, Grundberg conveyed the expectations of the Yemeni people for conflict resolution through international collaboration and diplomacy.

Principals of Affected United Nations entities and International Non-Governmental Organizations renew their call for the immediate release of detained personnel

We are extremely concerned about the reported referral to “criminal prosecution” by the Houthi de facto authorities of a significant number of arbitrarily detained colleagues, including three United Nations personnel—two from UNESCO and one from the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR)—who were detained in 2021 and 2023.
At a time when we were hoping for the release of our colleagues, we are deeply distressed by this reported development. The potential laying of “charges” against our colleagues is unacceptable and further compounds the lengthy incommunicado detention they have already endured.
Such a decision further raises serious concerns about the safety and security of our staff and their families, and will further impede our ability to reach millions of Yemenis who need humanitarian aid and protection, with detrimental consequences for their well-being and status.
We, the Principals of the affected United Nations entities and International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), renew our urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release of all personnel from UN entities, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions arbitrarily detained in Yemen by the de facto authorities.
The targeting of humanitarians in Yemen—including arbitrary detention, intimidation, mistreatment, and false allegations—must stop, and all those detained must be released immediately.
The United Nations, INGOs, and partners are working through all possible channels and with multiple governments to secure the immediate release of those detained.

خلال اللقاء ، ناقش حزب الرشاد التطورات في اليمن والمنطقة، واقترح خطوات نحو التعافي الاقتصادي، وبناء الثقة، ووقف إطلاق النار، وعملية سياسية شاملة. ومن المقرر عقد المزيد من الاجتماعات الثنائية والمتعددة الأطراف في الأسابيع المقبلة.

On Wednesday, @OSE_Yemen met with members of the Rashad Party, starting a series of political dialogues between the Office and Yemeni political parties and entities, civil society, women and other actors.

Discussions will enable the Office to strategically engage with the evolving realities and aspirations of Yemenis across the board as it continues working towards de-escalation and focusing on the commitments made by the Parties.

The Rashad Party discussed developments in Yemen and the region, and outlined steps towards economic recovery, confidence-building measures, ceasefire and an inclusive political process. More bilateral and multilateral meetings are planned for the coming weeks.

المبعوث الأممي غروندبرغ يختتم زيارة إلى إيران

اختتم المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ زيارته إلى طهران، حيث أجرى محادثات مع وزير الخارجية الإيراني عباس عراقجي وكبار من المسؤولين الإيرانيين وعدد من الدبلوماسيين. وهنأ السيد غروندبرغ الوزيرعراقجي على توليه منصبه الجديد وأعرب عن تطلعاته لتعزيز التعاون الإقليمي لدعم الجهود الرامية إلى تحقيق حل سلمي للنزاع في اليمن.

خلال الاجتماعات، سلّط المبعوث الخاص الضوء على عدد من القضايا الملّحة، بما في ذلك التطورات الإقليمية التي تقوّض جهود الوساطة. كما تناول التصعيدات الأخيرة في البحر الأحمر، مشيراً إلى المخاوف الأمنية الأوسع وما قد ينجم عن ذلك من تداعيات تزيد من زعزعة الاستقرار في المنطقة. وشدد غروندبرغ على الحاجة الملحة لاستئناف مسار المفاوضات البناءة، مؤكداً أن الحوار هو السبيل الوحيد المستدام لتحقيق السلام والاستقرار في اليمن. كما شدد على أهمية الجهود الإقليمية والدولية المنسقة لدفع اليمن نحو حل شامل ودائم للنزاع.

وقال غروندبرغ: "لقد أجريت مناقشات صريحة وبناءة مع المسؤولين في طهران. الجهود المشتركة ضرورية لتجاوز التحديات التي يفرضها النزاع ولضمان تحقيق تسوية سلمية تلبي تطلعات الشعب اليمني." وأضاف: "خلال جميع اللقاءات، حرصت على أن يكون دعم النداء العاجل للأمين العام لإفراج عن جميع الزملاء المحتجزين من أولوياتي الأساسية. يجب أن يتم الإفراج عنهم دون تأخير لتعزيز الأمل والثقة اللازمين للمضي قدماً."

UN Special Envoy Grundberg concludes visit to Iran

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, visited Tehran, where he held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials and diplomats. Mr. Grundberg congratulated Minister Araghchi on his new role and expressed his aspirations for further regional collaboration to support efforts towards a peaceful end to the conflict in Yemen.

During the meetings, the Special Envoy highlighted several pressing issues, including regional dynamics, that pose a risk to the mediation efforts. He also discussed the recent escalations in the Red Sea, noting the broader security concerns and their potential to further destabilize the region. Grundberg emphasized the urgent need to resume constructive negotiations, stressing that dialogue is the only sustainable path to achieving peace and stability in Yemen. He reiterated that unified regional and international efforts are essential to guide the country back on course toward a comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict.

"I have engaged in frank and constructive discussions with interlocutors in Tehran. Concerted efforts are key to overcoming the conflict's challenges and securing a peaceful outcome that meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people." Grundberg stated. " Throughout all my engagements, I made it a priority to lend my voice to the Secretary-General's urgent call to release all detained colleagues. Their release must happen without delay to restore the hope and trust needed for moving forward."
