🌺OXIDATION OF ALCOHOL

Basic knowledge:

Alcohol can be divided into three classes 🤔 which are,

🍁Primary (1°) alcohol
🍁Secondary (2°) alcohol
🍁Tertiary (3°) alcohol

And how them can be classified

They classified based on carbon that "OH" group attached, if "OH" group attached to

🌿 1° carbon --> 1° alcohol
🌿 2° carbon --> 2° alcohol
🌿 3° carbon --> 3° alcohol

🍄Oxidation of 1° alcohol

1° alcohol can be oxidized into 2 organic compounds:

🌳Aldehyde
🌳Carboxylic acid

If 1° alcohol oxidized by using MILD (weak) Oxidizing agent, therefore..

1° alcohol ---> Aldehyde

But if using STRONG Oxidizing agent🤔, therefore..

1° alcohol ---> Carboxylic acid

🍄Oxidation of 2° alcohol

2° alcohol can be oxidized into ketone ONLY🤓

2° alcohol ---> Ketone

1) The oxidation of 2-propanol (2° alcohol) using acidified KMnO4 solution yields ketone A.

2) when carbonyl compounds react with Grignard reagent, the alkyl group from the Grignard reagent is added to carbonyl carbon atom of carbonyl compounds. Alcohol is formed after hydrolysis
