A year of OrtoForesta faces.

Farming is a tough job, a rewarding lifestyle, a beautiful gift, a way to fulfil our ecological function, a spiritual quest, a way to practice inner and outer wilderness, a tangle of enriching crossoroads.

La vita, amico, è l’arte dell’incontro. (G. Ungaretti, S. Endrigo, V. da Moraes)

A year of garden views.

The evolution of a landscape is as much an inner process as it is an outer one.

2024 has seen a huge amount of growth at OrtoForesta. These are some snapshots of the garden throughout the year.

”Plants, animals, and stars are all kept in place, bridled along appointed ways, with one another, and through the midst of one another -- killing and being killed, eating and being eaten, in harmonious proportions and quantities.” (John Muir)

Drops of November. Specks. Of icy mornings and bright days, dry weeks and wet spells.

Of warm food - which is a mosaic of intentions and never-clashing colours. Of water in all its forms, its magic, its exact precision. Of enriching visits, unexpected geoglyphs and ancient traditions, made-up tales and secret histories.

Of nurturing team work, enduring grace and nomadic chickens. Of dying plants and living perspectives.

Of a landscape in the making. A pattern of patterns made of patterns.

Of slowing down, and long darkness approaching. And light again, and going far. Further.

“Wisdom requires not only the investigation of many things, but contemplation of the mystery.” (Jeremy Narby)

🥕 Are you looking to learn how to grow vegetables professionally, in harmony with ecological dynamics?

👨‍🌾 Would you enjoy working in a diverse team, with people from different backgrounds, countries, who speak different languages but share a passion for horticulture?

🌳 Are you eager to experience market gardening within a syntropic agroforestry system?

💌 Then get in touch with us! We are looking for TWO interns for the summer, plus TWO interns for the autumn of 2025.

👨‍🌾 👩‍🌾 Orto Foresta is a Regenerative Market Garden in Florence, Italy - run by Dario & Tessa. We grow and sell fruit and vegetables in an agroforestry system which produces nutritious food while regenerating the ecosystem, soil health, biodiversity and community. In our work, we integrate the methods of biointensive no-dig market gardening and syntropic agriculture.

🙃 We like share our experience with passion, taking care to create an environment where people can learn.

September and October weaves. Of juicy storms and ghostly fibres, shiny peppers and wonky stems.
Of dying tomatoes that morph into sauce, empty shells that fade into snakes.

Of trust and reflection. Of greens and browns. The invention of wood, the discovery of water. Of travelling back to a where. Moving on to a when.

Of groups, crowds, network, communities. Above all - of us, teeny tiny humans. Trying to learn from our mistakes, and to teach by our unexpected leaps.

Of home - that is the illusion that you are you and I am me.

Summer snapshots. Of comings and goings, planning and winging, care and abundance.

Of old visitors and fresh landscapes. Of tending a language, learning a garden. Hidden chaos, inexplicable order.

Of allowing oneself to be weak, while remembering to be strong. Of knitting the threads and tying the knots. Being tired but pushing through.

All the eggs in one basket, a river of squash, a carpet of onion, a book and a song.

Of saying arrivederci, “o no?”

Don't judge every day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. (R.L.Stevenson)
