Fix Messy Data in Seconds with PROPER and Flash Fill

😟Are you struggling to clean up messy data in Excel?

👉Let’s say you have a column full of names, but they’re in ALL CAPS, and you need them in proper case (e.g., "John Doe"). Manually fixing this would take forever😢

😇Here’s a quick fix: Use the PROPER function, Just type =PROPER(A1) in a new column, and it will convert "JOHN DOE" to "John Doe." Drag the formula down to apply it to the entire column.

For even faster results, combine this with Flash Fill (Ctrl + E). Type the first name in the correct format, press Ctrl + E, and Excel will auto-fill the rest.😁

Now it’s your turn. Open Excel, try this trick, and let me know @Jsmartez how much time it saved you.

Tip of the day
:👇
💡 Use Alt + = to automatically sum a column or row of numbers. Just select the cell where you want the total and press Alt + =. Excel will do the math for you.

Excel’s VLOOKUP function

😊Do you often find yourself scrolling through endless rows of data to find specific information? Excel’s VLOOKUP function can save the day.

👉Let’s say you have a product list in one sheet and sales data in another. You want to find the price of a specific product. Use =VLOOKUP("Product Name", A1:B10, 2, FALSE) to search for the product and return its price.

But wait! If you’re using Excel 2019 or later, try XLOOKUP instead. It’s more flexible and easier to use.

Formulas and Functions

Before we dive into the above topics, let's remind ourselves about Formulas and Functions.

Key Differences

Formulas: Custom calculations created by the user using operators, cell references, and constants.

Functions: Predefined formulas in Excel designed to perform specific tasks, like summing values or finding the average.

Ignoring spelling "errors"

Spell check isn't always correct. It will sometimes mark certain words as incorrect even if they're spelled correctly.

This often happens with names, which may not be in the dictionary.

You can choose not to change a spelling "error" using one of the following three options:

Ignore Once: This will skip the word without changing it.

Ignore All: This will skip the word without changing it and also skip all other instances of the word in your worksheet.

Add: This adds the word to the dictionary so it will never appear as an error again. Make sure the word is spelled correctly before choosing this option.

Excel - Checking Spelling

Before sharing a workbook, you'll want to make sure it doesn't include any spelling errors.

Fortunately, Excel includes a spell check tool you can use to make sure everything in your workbook is spelled correctly.

If you've used the spell check feature in Microsoft Word, just be aware that the spell check tool in Excel, while helpful, is not as powerful. For example, it won't check for grammar issues or check spelling as you type.

To use spell check: Follow the steps attached.
