Wrapping Up 2024 on a Meaningful Note

On December 31, I had the chance to interact with officer trainees of Uttarakhand Public Services during the 15th Foundation Course at the Dr. R.S. Tolia Uttarakhand Academy of Administration, Nainital.

The session on “Leading with Emotional Intelligence” was all about practical learning. Together, we explored how empathy, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence can help tackle real-world challenges in leadership.

It was truly rewarding to contribute to their journey as future leaders. A meaningful way to close the year!

📢 UPSC 2024 Ethics Mains: Understanding Form & Substance!

In the 2024 UPSC Mains, the Ethics paper threw a critical question at aspirants:
“Mindless addiction to form, ignoring the substance of the matter, results in the rendering of injustice. A perceptive civil servant is one who ignores such literalness and carries out true intent.”

📝 What’s the difference between Form & Substance?

Form: Rigid adherence to rules and procedures.
Substance: Focus on the underlying purpose and justice behind the rules.

🚨 Why does it matter?
In public administration, especially in a diverse country like India, blindly following procedures can sometimes lead to injustice. A perceptive civil servant balances the letter and spirit of the law to ensure fairness and welfare.

In this conceptual session, I break down:
🔹 The tension between Form vs. Substance
🔹 How to approach this question in the exam
🔹 Characteristics of a perceptive civil servant

Who are we?

Plutarch’s thought experiment known as “the Ship of Theseus” uses an Ancient Greek analogy to explain the metamorphosis of human identity.

In this story, Theseus — the founder-king of Athens — sailed triumphantly back to the great city after slaying the mythic Minotaur of Crete. During the journey his ship needed extensive repairs. Gradually, every part of the vessel was replaced with a new part and by the time the he completed the voyage nothing of the original ship remained.

Do you think it was the same ship that started and ended the journey or was it a different one?

Two basic words in ethics are RIGHT and GOOD.
Most of us tend to use the words interchangeably not realising that they aren’t the same.
Understanding RIGHT & GOOD is basic to understanding ethics. In fact knowing the difference between the two will help in:
= Understanding ethical theories better
= will be able to answer case studies better
In the following video I have explained the difference between the two basic terms:
