_MEMORANDUM_

*Course Waiver Policy and Recent Developments*

Dear Graduating Students,

This memo serves to clarify the University’s stance on the issue of course waivers and the recent developments affecting those who signed out in December 2024.

The University Senate, in collaboration with the Vice-Chancellor, has consistently considered granting a compassionate waiver for a single carryover course per semester (up to two semesters) to eligible students. This decision has been made annually since 2021 and remains subject to Senate deliberations at the end of each academic session.

To qualify for a course waiver:

1. A student must have seen all their registered courses and have only one carryover course remaining.

2. The decision is taken after Senate reviews all results, meaning students must wait until their full results are available.

3. Requests must follow the proper administrative channel, including passing through the Dean of Students Affairs before reaching the Senate.

Unfortunately, some students who signed out in December 2024 prematurely submitted course waiver requests directly to the Senate without following due process.

Since the Senate had not yet reviewed their results, and their requests bypassed the required channels, their applications were dismissed during the last Senate meeting.

As a result, course waiver considerations for the December 2024 graduates are now undecided.

Students who still have outstanding courses must register as spillover students to complete their graduation requirements.

For future reference, all students are advised to adhere strictly to the proper procedures when applying for anything within the university system.

FMC Ikole conducts successful knee replacement surgery

Less than six months into its operations, the Federal Medical Centre, Ikole-Ekiti, in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has successfully performed a total knee replacement surgery.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Dare Ogunlusi, who disclosed this to newsmen, explained that the surgery was performed on a 72-year-old woman who had been battling knee pain for years.

Ogunlusi noted that the patient started walking three days after the operation, adding that the procedure was carried out by experienced and competent experts in the field.

He revealed that the hospital was established by the federal government to provide quality and affordable healthcare services, urging people to take advantage of the opportunity to address their health challenges.

Ogunlusi stated that facilities in the hospital have been upgraded to meet global best standards and to help deliver quality healthcare services to patients.

He commended President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Health Professor Ali Pate, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, and others for their commitment and efforts in improving the standard of healthcare for the people.

According to him, “On Saturday, February 1, 2025, we performed what is called a total knee replacement, a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged knee. We had a 72-year-old woman who had been in pain in her left knee, making it difficult for her to walk.

“FMC Ikole is just about six months old, but I think it is remarkable that we have already performed surgery of this magnitude.

37 Students suspended From Nasawara State University For Allegedly Forming WhatsApp Group to Plan Protests

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has suspended 37 students for one academic session over their alleged involvement in “criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, and cyber-stalking.”

According to official documents obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday, dated December 9, 2024, and January 21, 2025, the students were sanctioned for their participation in a WhatsApp group allegedly created to organize a protest against the university’s decision to introduce a third semester.

Following the discovery, the affected students were summoned before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

The University Senate, at its 123rd Regular Meeting on October 31, 2024, reviewed the committee’s findings and approved the recommendation to suspend them for the 2024/2025 academic session.

In a letter titled “Rustication for One Academic Session”, signed by the Registrar, Dr. Bala I. Ahmed, and copied to key university officials, the institution directed the affected students to stay away from the campus unless granted written permission.

They are required to return for the 2025/2026 academic session’s first semester, accompanied by their parents or guardians, and must submit a written undertaking pledging good behavior throughout the remainder of their studentship.

OWO CRISIS: DECLARATION OF DAWN-TO-DUSK CURFEW

Due to the ongoing violent cult clashes and security disturbances in Owo which have led to loss of lives, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has ordered a dawn-to-dusk curfew in the town, till further notice.

All residents are required to remain indoors during the curfew. Only essential services, such as hospitals, emergency services, and law enforcement, will be exempted from the curfew.

The Governor has also asked secutiry agencies in the State to enforce the curfew, ensure safety of lives, properties, arrest perpetrators of the violence and restore peace to the community.

Woman Killed by Accidental Police Gunfire in Ekiti

A devastating incident occurred in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Thursday, when a police officer allegedly accidentally discharged his rifle, killing a woman. According to reports, the tragic event took place opposite an Okela police post, where the woman had gone to visit her detained husband.

Reportedly, the officer's accidental gunfire hit the woman, who was standing in front of a salon opposite the station. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead.

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, AIG Akinwale Adeniran, confirmed the incident and stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and detained for interrogation, in accordance with the police act. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, the approval to commence its Pharmacy programme starting from the 2024/2025 academic session.

The approval, which marks a significant milestone in the institution's academic development, was conveyed in a letter dated December 19, 2024. The letter, signed by Abubakar Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, confirmed the establishment of a full-time mode of the Doctor of Pharmacy programme.

With this nod, EKSU will now initiate the process of admitting pioneer students into the newly established Faculty of Pharmacy, fulfilling a long-anticipated ambition to expand its academic offerings.

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has recorded a significant milestone as the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially approved 22 new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the institution on 11th December 2024. This achievement marks another step forward in FUOYE’s ongoing commitment to academic growth and excellence.

The newly approved programmes include three undergraduate degrees: B.Eng. Information and Communication Engineering, B.Eng. Software Engineering, and B.Sc. Cyber Security.

For postgraduate studies, the approved programmes are: PGDE (Education), PGD Science Education, PGD Criminology and Security Studies, and PGD Educational Management.

Additionally, the university will now offer M.Sc. and PhD in Science Education, M.Sc. and PhD in Criminology and Security Studies, M.Ed. and PhD in Business Education, and M.Ed. and PhD in Educational Management.

The list also includes five professional master’s programmes: Forensic Accounting, Financial Fraud Investigation and Intelligence, Public Finance Management, Crime Investigative Management, and Criminology and Security Studies.

A devastating fire incident occurred on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at a furniture workshop located at the Second Gate Irewolede Housing Estate, opposite the CDA Event Center along Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started at approximately 2 pm, destroying properties worth a significant amount. The inferno also ravaged the security post of the Irewolede Housing Estate, leaving the security personnel's properties in ruins.

UPDATE ON THE INCREMENT IN TUITION FEES FOR NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS

We write to you in our official capacity as representatives of the Student Union Government with due regard to the trust reposed in us to defend the interests and welfare of the student body. This letter serves as an official update on our engagement today with the University Management, the Governing Council, and other relevant stakeholders concerning the recent increment in tuition fees for newly admitted students.

The SUG, acting within its mandate, promptly convened a meeting with the University Management, the Governing Council Chairman (ably represented by the Global President), and the Alumni Association. At these meeting, we articulated the collective concerns of the student populace, underscoring the financial hardship this policy imposes on our students and their families.

Guided by the principle that education is a fundamental right, the Union unequivocally asserted that the increment is inconsistent with the ideals of accessibility and equity in education. We reiterated our commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students, emphasizing that the economic realities of many families cannot accommodate such a significant financial burden.

In advancing the interests of students, we tabled the following demands:

1. *A 15% Reduction in Tuition Fees for the Newly Admitted Students:*
This demand seeks to ease the financial strain on students while ensuring the University remains adequately funded.

2. *Reduction in Faculty Due:*
Recognizing the additional burden posed by faculty-specific charges, we urged the University Management to review and reduce these fees in alignment with our call for affordability.

The SUG has maintained that these proposals strike a fair balance between institutional sustainability and student welfare. We appealed to the Governing Council to adopt these measures as a testament to their commitment to inclusive education.

As we await an official response to our demands, we wish to assure all students that the Union remains resolute in its pursuit of this cause. Our advocacy is underpinned by an unyielding belief that education must be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status.

We implore our esteemed students to remain calm and steadfast as we navigate this process. Be assured that we will make every effort in ensuring a favorable resolution. Your unwavering support and cooperation remain invaluable as we continue to champion the cause of accessible education for all.

UPDATE ON EKSU FEES REGIME FOR FRESHERS

The Management of Ekiti State University, Ado - Ekiti, after due consultation and negotiation with its Students' Union met to review the situation surrounding the fee regime payable by freshers for the 2024/2025 academic session.

At its meeting held on Monday, 25th November, 2024, Management also considered the concerns of parents and stakeholders, including the students on the matter.

Additionally, Management took cognizance of the economic realities in the country with a view to further reducing the burden of parents in the payment of the fees.

Accordingly, the EKSU Management decided to allow fresh students to pay a minimum of 70% of the approved fees for the first semester, while the balance of 30% is paid during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic session. However, parents who can afford and wish to pay the fees in full at once are encouraged to do so without any delay.

President Bola Tinubu extends his heartfelt congratulations to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt refinery, marked by the official commencement of petroleum product loading on November 26, 2024.

The President acknowledges the pivotal role of former President Muhammadu Buhari in initiating the comprehensive rehabilitation of all our refineries and expresses gratitude to the African Export-Import Bank for its confidence in financing this critical project.

Furthermore, President Tinubu commends the leadership of NNPC Limited's Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, whose unwavering dedication and commitment were instrumental in overcoming challenges to achieve this milestone.

With the successful revival of the Port Harcourt refinery, President Tinubu urges  NNPC Limited to expedite the scheduled  reactivation of both the second Port Harcourt refinery and the Warri and Kaduna refineries.

The NANS Southwest Coordinator, Comrade Taiwo Owolewa, and the NANS JCC Chairman, Comrade Asaolu Femi, held a crucial discussion earlier today on Midas Fm 90.5fm to address the contentious issue of the EKSU tuition increment fees. In a bold and unwavering stance, they categorically instructed all freshers to refrain from making any payments until NANS gives the green light.

This directive is a clear indication of NANS unrelenting commitment to fighting for the rights and interests of students. The leadership has taken a firm stance against the exorbitant tuition fees, and their resolve will not be shaken. The message is clear, the school must reconsider its decision, or face the consequences.

The Coordinator warning to the school is stern and unambiguous. If the school administration refuses to reduce the tuition fees, they will be met with fierce resistance from NANS. The students union will not back down, and will employ every available means to ensure that the rights of students are protected.

The National body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has presented an award of appreciation to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Professor Akin Oyebode.

The award was presented to Professor Oyebode at an event held in a popular hotel in Abuja.

While presenting the award, the National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke said that the award was presented to Professor Oyebode in recognition of his commitment and inestimable contribution towards the struggle of ASUU. He described the awardee as a revered scholar of repute.

In his remarks, the Pro – Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Professor Akin Oyebode expressed deep appreciation to ASUU for the award.

The event was attended by eminent personalities such as a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr. Chris Maiyaki, the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Arch. Sonny Echono, the Vice Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Professor Babatola Ayodele, among others.

Professor Akin Oyebode was the Vice Chancellor of the then University of Ado Ekiti (now Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti) between year 2000 and 2004. He was appointed as the Pro -Chancellor & Chairman, Governing Council, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti by the Visitor to the university, His Excellency, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji in January, 2023.

No Supervisor (Lecturer) will attend to any student without the Logbook and other forms from the SIWES unit.

It is no more news that EKSU has made it mandatory for all graduands certificates to bear their respective passports.. It has been realized that some students are yet to even upload a passport until now, According to an insider, some immoral pictures are also uploaded by students on portal as passport, which has made the management to reproduce a lot of certificates as pictures with BRA, twisted tongue, turned buttocks cannot appear on certificates of the university. The University has laid emphasis on this, and now The penalty for not uploading a white background and an unbefitting passport is 40,000.
