Memories are not only in the brain, new research finds

"Learning and memory are generally associated with brains and brain cells alone, but our study shows that other cells in the body can learn and form memories, too," explains New York University's Nikolay V. Kukushkin, the lead author of the study.

The research sought to better understand if non-brain cells help with memory by borrowing from a long-established neurological property -- the massed-spaced effect -- which shows that we tend to retain information better when studied in spaced intervals rather than in a single, intensive session -- better known as cramming for a test.

In the Nature Communications research, the scientists replicated learning over time by studying two types of non-brain human cells in a laboratory (one from nerve tissue and one from kidney tissue) and exposing them to different patterns of chemical signals -- just like brain cells are exposed to patterns of neurotransmitters when we learn new information.

In response, the non-brain cells turned on a "memory gene" -- the same gene that brain cells turn on when they detect a pattern in the information and restructure their connections in order to form memories.

To monitor the memory and learning process, the scientists engineered these non-brain cells to make a glowing protein, which indicated when the memory gene was on and when it was off.

The results showed that these cells could determine when the chemical pulses, which imitated bursts of neurotransmitter in the brain, were repeated rather than simply prolonged -- just as neurons in our brain can register when we learn with breaks rather than cramming all the material in one sitting.

Specifically, when the pulses were delivered in spaced-out intervals, they turned on the "memory gene" more strongly, and for a longer time, than when the same treatment was delivered all at once.

"This reflects the massed-space effect in action," says Kukushkin, a clinical associate professor of life science at NYU Liberal Studies and a research fellow at NYU's Center for Neural Science.

"It shows that the ability to learn from spaced repetition isn't unique to brain cells, but, in fact, might be a fundamental property of all cells."

The researchers add that the findings not only offer new ways to study memory, but also point to potential health-related gains.

"This discovery opens new doors for understanding how memory works and could lead to better ways to enhance learning and treat memory problems," observes Kukushkin.

"At the same time, it suggests that in the future, we will need to treat our body more like the brain -- for example, consider what our pancreas remembers about the pattern of our past meals to maintain healthy levels of blood glucose or consider what a cancer cell remembers about the pattern of chemotherapy."

Carbon emissions from private jets have exploded in recent years

The climate impact of flights taken by the super-rich rose sharply from 2019 to 2023, fuelling calls for a carbon tax on private aviation.

Flights taken on private jets should be subject to a carbon tax to curb the runaway growth in carbon emissions from the sector, researchers have said.

Emissions from private aviation jumped 46 per cent between 2019 and 2023, according to analysis of 18.7 million flights by almost 26,000 aircraft.

Flights were mainly for leisure reasons, with 1846 private flights to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar alone. Other popular destinations were the Cannes Film Festival, the Super Bowl, the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, and the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trips to the south of France, Ibiza and other destinations in Spain peaked during the summer months as travellers jetted in for long weekends of sun.

“A rather small group of very wealthy individuals, because of their lifestyles and investments, is pushing emissions quite quickly up,” says Stefan Gössling at Linnaeus University, Sweden.

Alongside colleagues, Gössling used flight tracker data for millions of flights to build a picture of private aviation use around the world.

Flying by private jet is the most polluting way to travel, with a single flight emitting 3.6 tonnes of CO2 on average, equivalent to the annual carbon impact of someone living in Sweden.

Most flights on private jets are short, the analysis found, with almost half of all flights covering a distance less than 500 kilometres. Most were within the US and Europe.

Total emissions from private jets in 2023 were 15.6 megatonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the annual emissions of Tanzania. That is up from 10.7 megatonnes in 2019.

Growth rates were distorted by the covid-19 pandemic. Unlike commercial aviation, which was heavily restricted in 2020 and 2021, private aviation only showed a small dip in flight numbers and emissions in 2020 before rebounding to growth the following year.

Many of the most extensively used private jets are owned by very rich celebrities, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, pop star Jay-Z and entertainment personality Kim Kardashian, according to data compiled by the website Celebrity Jet.

“This is about the inequality in the production of greenhouse gases,” says Mark Maslin at University College London. “It’s not even the 1 per cent – it’s the 0.1 per cent richest people in the world who click their fingers and use a private jet.”

The high personal emissions of the super-rich risks eroding public appetite for cutting personal emissions, says Gössling. “If the very wealthy don’t don’t have to reduce their emissions… then we don’t have any reason for anybody else to reduce their emissions, because everybody else is emitting less,” he says.

Gössling would like to see a carbon tax applied to private jet use. “We can put a price tag on every tonne [of carbon] that is emitted, and I think everybody will agree that it’s fair that the affluent should pay the cost of the damage that they are causing,” he says.

Others would like governments to go even further. Sean Currie at the campaign group Stay Grounded wants to see a total ban on the use of private jets. “Around half of these flights are short-haul flights,” he says. “They could easily be replaced by trains if we were to ban private jets and then invest in real infrastructure.”

Bird flu antibodies found in dairy workers in Michigan and Colorado

Blood tests have shown that about 7 per cent of workers on dairy farms that had H5N1 outbreaks had antibodies against the disease.

There may be more bird flu cases in humans in the US than we previously thought. Health departments in two states took blood tests of workers on dairy farms known to have hosted infected cattle and found that about 7 per cent of them have antibodies for the disease. This included people who never experienced any flu symptoms.

Since March, a bird flu virus known as H5N1 has been circulating in dairy cows across the US. So far, 446 cows in 15 US states have tested positive for the virus. Since April, 44 people in the US have tested positive for H5 – the influenza subtype that includes H5N1. All but one of these cases occurred in workers on H5N1-infected poultry or dairy farms.

To better understand how many farm workers may have contracted the virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborated with state health departments in Colorado and Michigan to collect blood samples from 115 people working on dairy farms with H5N1-infected cattle. All of the samples were obtained between 15 and 19 days after cows on the farms had tested positive for the virus.

Nirav Shah at the CDC and his colleagues then removed seasonal influenza antibodies from the samples before testing them for the presence of H5N1 antibodies. They found H5N1 antibodies in eight of the samples, or about 7 per cent, suggesting that eight of the workers had been unknowingly infected with the virus. What’s more, four of the workers didn’t recall ever having symptoms.

“This is critical because, before this point, the recommendations for [H5N1] testing largely have focused on symptomatic workers,” says Meghan Davis at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. “When workers don’t know that they are infected, they inadvertently may expose other people in their communities to the infection.”

H5N1 is poorly adapted to infecting humans and isn’t known to transmit between people. Still, more than 900 people globally are reported to have had the virus since 2003, roughly half of whom died from it. Each of these infections offers the virus an opportunity to develop mutations that may make it more dangerous to people.

“We in public health need to cast a wider net of who we offer a test,” said Shah at a press conference today. “Going forward, the CDC is expanding its testing recommendation to include workers who were exposed [to H5N1] and do not have symptoms.”

The agency is also recommending that antiviral medications be offered to asymptomatic workers who have a high-risk exposure, like those on dairy farms who may get raw milk splashed on their face. That way, if they do contract the virus, a lower amount of it will be circulating within them, which in turn lowers the risk of it spreading to other people. “The less room we give this virus to run, the fewer chances we give it to change,” said Shah.

These Bird Nests Show Signs of an Architectural ‘Culture’

From long and winding migration flights to intricate songs and clever tool use, many bird behaviors are known to be transmitted socially and persist across generations—what scientists define as animal “culture.” Now a study suggests culture might play a role in avian architecture, too.
Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures built by 43 different groups of White-browed Sparrow-Weavers in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. These birds live communally, and the entire cohort works together to build a nest and multiple roosts from grass. The group’s dominant female then lays eggs in the nest, which has a long, tubelike entrance. Individual birds slumber nearby in the U-shaped roosts, which have both an entrance and an exit.
The scientists found that different gatherings of birds, even those living only a few meters from one another, built very different tube structures. The biggest difference was in “how short or long the structures are,” says study lead author Maria C. Tello-Ramos, a cognitive ecologist at the University of Hull in England. Tube width also varied between groups. Furthermore, each group maintained the same architectural style over time—and when outsiders joined, they adapted to this style.
To examine why the groups built differently, the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest’s size and shape for a given bird species: weather conditions, tree height, individuals’ body size and genetic relatedness. Yet none of these factors seemed to play a relevant role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests, the researchers report
