500,000 ceramic coins, produced in Japan during metal shortages in World War II, have been discovered in Kyoto.🪙

On the 9th, the Mint announced that clay coins, which were never issued due to the end of the war, were discovered in a warehouse at the site of a former factory in Higashiyama Ward. Although each 1-sen coin originally held a value of only 1/100 of a yen (0.6 cents), a Mint official stated, “These artifacts have historical value.” The round 1-sen ceramic coins, 15 millimeters in diameter, were stored in 15 wooden boxes, with each side depicting Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. 💰💰💰

During World War II, a total of 15 million ceramic coins in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, and 10 sen were produced, but they were disposed of after the war and came to be known as “phantom currency.” It is said to be rare to find such a large quantity of this type of ceramic currency.👀👀👀

Wasabi is a species of perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Eutrema of the Brassicaceae family. Wasabi is known worldwide as "Japanese horseradish" and has been used in Japanese cuisine since the early 10th century as a seasoning.

Eutrema japonica is an amazingly capricious plant. The pungent rhizomes of Eutrema love the icy waters of mountain streams, which is why wasabi grows along the banks of mountain rivers. Wasabi grown on the shore has a brighter taste. A biological feature is the very slow growth of the rhizome - no more than 3 cm per year. Eutrema begins to acquire its properties in the second half of the 2nd year. The rhizome is considered mature only after 3-4 years of cultivation.

In September, wholesale prices in Japan increased, mainly due to rising prices of everyday food products like rice.

The Bank of Japan reported that the preliminary Producer Price Index (PPI) rose by 2.8% compared to last year, slightly higher than the 2.6% increase recorded in August. The index measures the prices companies charge each other for goods and services.

Bank of Japan officials link the rise in rice prices to increased transportation and fertilizer costs. Egg prices also went up amid unusually hot weather.

Bank of Japan data shows that import prices in September fell by 2.6% in yen terms compared to the previous year, marking the first decline since January.

October brought a wave of price increases for various goods and services across Japan.

Central bank officials are closely monitoring whether rising labor costs will impact the prices that businesses charge each other.

From October 8th to 22nd, "Kanro" 寒露 (the season of dew) begins in Japan.

The appearance of cold dew signifies the end of the long rains and the start of the "serious" autumn for the Japanese. During this time, the harvest of grains is in full swing, and the Momiji 紅葉 (maple) leaves begin to turn red.

The symbol of this period is the Kinmokusei 金木犀 flower. It was brought from China during the Edo period (1603-1868), where it was used for medicinal and culinary purposes, and in Japan, it came to be used as a natural air freshener. Kinmokusei symbolizes truth, human nobility, and a dignified and long life.

Temizuya 手水舎 is a pavilion for washing hands and mouth in Shinto shrines.

It is located at the entrance to the shrine grounds and is a canopy on pillars, under which there is a container with running water. The name comes from Te (hands), Mizu (water) and Ya (building). Misogi 禊 (ablution ritual) was once performed in a nearby river or spring, but today this form of the ritual has survived only in Ise-jingu 伊勢神宮. Later, the ritual was simplified to washing hands.

The ritual consists of rinsing the left hand, then the right hand, then the mouth. Water is taken with a special ladle Hishaku 柄杓, made of bamboo or metal. Ablutions are performed before approaching the shrine itself.
