🚨 Google’s AI is being used by US military drone programme

Google’s artificial intelligence technologies are being used by the US military for one of its drone projects, causing controversy both inside and outside the company. Google’s TensorFlow AI systems are being used by the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) Project Maven, which was established in July last year to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyse the vast amount of footage shot by US drones. The initial intention is to have AI analyse the video, detect objects of interest and flag them for a human analyst to review.

🚨 Elon Musk’s xAI raising up to $6 billion to purchase 100,000 Nvidia chips for Memphis data center

🟡 Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company XAI is raising up to $6 billion at a $50 billion valuation, according to CNBC's David Faber.
Sources told Faber that the funding, which should close early next week, is a combination of $5 billion expected from sovereign funds in the Middle East and $1 billion from other investors, some of whom may want to re-up their investments. The money will be used to acquire 100,000 Nvidia + chips, per sources familiar with the situation.

🟡 Tesla E's Full Self Driving is expected to rely on the new Memphis supercomputer. Musk's AI startup, which he announced in July. 2023, seeks to "understand the true nature of the universe," according to its website. Last November, xAI released a chatbot called Grok, which the company said was modeled after "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The chatbot debuted with two months of training and had real-time knowledge of the internet, the company claimed at the time.

🟡 With Grok, xAI aims to directly compete with companies including ChatGPT creator OpenAI, which Musk helped start before a conflict with co-founder Sam Altman led him to depart the project in 2018. It will also be vying with Google's Bard technology and Anthropic's Claude chatbot. 🚨 AI surgery helps this legally blind woman regain 20/16 eyesight, here’s how

🔹 A 31-year-old Portuguese woman, who was declared legally blind, now has better than 20/20 vision, thanks to AI. She became the first person in the UK to undergo a revolutionary AI-powered laser eye surgery. Patrícia Gonçalves underwent the new Lasik procedure at Focus Clinics in London Post the surgery her eyesight was restored to a remarkable 20/16 visual acuity.

🔹 Patricia was legally blind without glasses owing to astigmatism and myopia. Her vision was worse than 20/200 which means that she couldn’t even read the largest “E” on an eye chart. Hence, her lasik procedure involved creating a “digital clone” of her eyes, which allowed an AI program to simulate thousands of laser adjustments to determine the best approach for her specific needs. The surgery was performed under the supervision of chief surgeon David Allamby.

🔹 After the procedure, she achieved a 20/16 vision. This is even better than the standard 20/20, which represents normal clarity at a distance of 20 feet. Speaking about the same, Dr Allamby said, “Her best vision pre-op was with glasses at 20/200. Today, she sees better at 20/16, gaining an extra line down the test chart.”

🔹 This life-changing technology is called “Eyevatar”. It has been used in China and Australia and is now available in the UK. This technology creates a high-precision eye map in just 10 minutes. This then allows an AI to replicate up to 2,000 laser beams to improve accuracy.

🚨Prime Video will let you summon AI to recap what you’re watching

🫥The new X-Ray Recaps feature will be able to summarize TV seasons, episodes, and parts of episodes.

🫥Amazon’s Prime Video is getting a new generative AI-powered feature to help catch you up on a show. The new tool, called X-Ray Recaps, can create text summaries of “of full seasons of TV shows, single episodes, and even pieces of episodes,” the company says in a blog post.

🫥X-Ray Recaps will be accessible from the detail page of a show or in X-Ray while you’re watching something. The tool “analyzes various video segments, combined with subtitles or dialogue, to generate detailed descriptions of key events, places, times, and conversations,” Amazon says. Amazon has also applied “guardrails” to help the feature avoid sharing spoilers and to keep summaries concise.

🫥X-Ray Recaps, which is are beta, are coming to Fire TV devices starting today, with support for “additional devices” available by the end of this year, Amazon says. The feature, at launch, will work with all Amazon MGM Studios Original series.

🚨 Jeff Bezos and OpenAI invest in robot startup Physical Intelligence at $2.4 billion valuation

🔹 Physical Intelligence, a robot startup based in San Francisco, has raised $400 million at a $2.4 billion post-money valuation, the company confirmed Monday to CNBC.
Investors included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, OpenAl, Thrive Capital and Lux Capital, a Physical Intelligence spokesperson said. Bond Capital said it also invested. Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital are also listed as investors on the company's website.

🔹 Physical Intelligence's new valuation is about six times that of its March seed round, which reportedly came in at $70 million with a $400 million valuation. Its current roster of employees includes alumni of Tesla, Google DeepMind and X. The startup focuses on "bringing general-purpose Al into the physical world," per its website, and it aims to do this by developing large-scale artificial intelligence models and algorithms to power robots. The startup spent the past eight months developing a "general-purpose" Al model for robots, the company wrote in a blog post.

🔹 Physical Intelligence hopes that model will be the first step toward its ultimate goal of developing artificial general intelligence. AGl is a term used to describe Al technology that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks. The news comes days after OpenAl launched a search feature within ChatGPT, its viral chatbot, that positions the Al startup to better compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing and Perplexity.

🔹 Last month, OpenAl also closed its latest funding round at a valuation of $157 billion. Physical Intelligence's vision is that one day users can "simply ask robots to perform any task they want, just like they can ask large language models (LLMs) and chatbot assistants," the startup wrote in the blog post. In case studies, Physical Intelligence details how its tech could allow a robot to do laundry, bus tables or assemble a box.

🚨Google Maps will use AI to answer questions about the new restaurant you want to try

🟦The app will also start letting you search for locations with descriptive prompts as well as display AI-summarized reviews.

🟦Google Maps is getting a big update that’s supposed to help you find new places to visit with AI. Starting this week, you’ll be able to explore more locations with Immersive View and search for specific spots based on a descriptive query like “things to do with friends at night.”
Google will then use its Gemini AI model to come up with “inspirational collections” matching that description. For late-night options, Google Maps might pull up locations categorized as “speakeasies” or places with “live music.” Meanwhile, regular search results remain below these collections.

🟦But that’s not the extent of the AI features Google is adding to Maps. Once you tap on a location, you’ll see AI-generated summaries of user reviews, along with a prompt to “Ask Maps about this place.” Here, you can enter a question, and Maps will use Gemini to provide an AI-generated answer based on what it’s gathered from reviews.

🟦During a press briefing, Google Maps head Miriam Daniel demonstrated how this might work by selecting a restaurant and entering, “Is it a quiet atmosphere?” Google Maps then returned an answer saying the location “has a lively atmosphere and a cozy feel.” Beneath the response, you’ll see the reviews Gemini used to inform its answer. These features are rolling out on Android and iOS this week in the US, building upon the AI integration Google began experimenting with earlier this year.

🟦“We wanted to make sure that anything we show in this experience is fresh and factual,” Daniel said. “There are 100 million updates happening every day, and we’re able to pull from that refreshed fresh information and ground the results from Gemini... making sure that the results show real places.

🟦Google is also expanding Immersive View to 150 cities. This feature, first rolled out in 2022, combines Street View and satellite images to provide an aerial view of a location, while also offering the ability to explore a city at street level. Some other updates include enhanced navigation that will show more details on the map when driving in select cities and updates to its Waze-like destination guidance features it previewed in July. Speaking of Waze, the Google-owned app is also adding the ability to report incidents on the road with your voice.

🟦Google is expanding “Help me write” to Gmail on the web, allowing users to whip up or tweak emails using Gemini AI. Just like on mobile, users will see a prompt to use the feature when opening a blank draft in Gmail.

🟦Google’s “Help me write” feature is only available to users who subscribe to Google One AI Premium or have the Gemini add-on for Workspace. In addition to generating an email draft, “Help me write” can also provide suggestions on how to formalize, elaborate, or shorten a message.

🟦Google is also adding a shortcut for the “polish” option available within its “Help me write” toolset, which will appear on drafts with over 12 words. For Gmail on the web, users can click the shortcut or type Ctrl + H to quickly refine an email.
On mobile, the option will replace the existing “Refine my draft” shortcut. Instead of swiping to see options to polish, formalize, elaborate, or shorten an email, the app will automatically refine the message when the “polish” shortcut is swiped. Users can then tweak the message further with Google’s other AI editing tools.

🚨 Humane slashes the price of its AI Pin after weak sales

🟦 The AI Pin now starts at $499 instead of $699 — but it doesn’t come with an extra battery or charge case. Humane is dropping the price of the AI Pin by $200 in an attempt to reverse the AI gadget’s very poor sales. The product launched earlier this year at $699, but now, you can buy one starting at $499. This $499 version is the “eclipse” model that is a matte black anodized aluminum, and it doesn’t come with an extra battery or the charge case. The latter makes some sense given that the company warned AI Pin owners not to use the charge car because it found some battery cells from a vendor “may pose a fire safety risk.”

🟦 You can still buy an extra battery separately for $69. And even though you can buy an AI Pin for a lower price, the gadget still requires a $24 per month wireless subscription.
The AI Pin launched this year to very poor reviews. In the time since, Humane has released updates to the device’s CosmOS software to add missing features like timers. The AI Pin has seriously struggled to gain traction; for a few months this year, daily returns had outpaced sales, my colleague Kylie Robinson reported this semester. Humane’s store also lists the white and black AI Pin models with polished aluminum (technically, “lunar” and “equinox”). Each is available for $799 as part of a “complete system” (though both are currently sold out) that comes with an extra battery pack and the charging case.

🚨 Google open-sourced its watermarking tool for AI-generated text

🟦 Developers can now use Google’s SynthID text watermarking tool to detect whether text outputs have come from their own models. Google’s SynthID text watermarking technology, a tool the company created to make AI-generated text easier to identify, is now available open-source through the Google Responsible Generative AI Toolkit, the company announced on X. “Now, other [generative] AI developers will be able to use this technology to help them detect whether text outputs have come from their own [large language models], making it easier for more developers to build AI responsibly,” Pushmeet Kohli, the vice president of research at Google DeepMind, told MIT Technology Review.

🟦 Google claims the system, which it’s already integrated into its Gemini chatbot, doesn’t compromise the quality, accuracy, creativity, or speed of generated text, which has long been an issue with watermarking systems. Google says it can work on text as short as three sentences, as well as text that’s been cropped, paraphrased, or modified. But it struggles with short text, content that’s been rewritten or translated, and even responses to factual questions. “SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for identifying AI generated content,” Google wrote in a blog post in May.“[But it] is an important building block for developing more reliable AI identification tools and can help millions of people make informed decisions about how they interact with AI-generated content.”

🚨 Siri’s big ChatGPT upgrade is here — for better and worse

🟦 The iOS 18.2 developer beta puts ChatGPT access right inside the operating system. Apple Intelligence’s official launch is less than a week away, but it’s the next wave of AI updates that will start to make Siri a lot more useful. The forthcoming iOS 18.2 update — now available as a developer beta — starts to make your phone a lot smarter with the addition if Visual Intelligence and the ability to pass Siri requests along to ChatGPT. On phones that support Apple Intelligence, Siri won’t just be a “let me Google that for you” machine; now it’s a “let me ChatGPT that for you” machine, with all that entails: good, bad, and everything in between.

🟦 By default, Siri will ask for confirmation every time it wants to pass on a request to ChatGPT. This makes a lot of sense, and I thought I’d prefer that behavior. But after an afternoon using it, I realized I just wanted to get to the ChatGPT answer faster and turned it off. Siri still handles basic questions on its own and doesn’t pass things like “When is the US election?” to ChatGPT, thankfully. And it will still just Google something for you when that’s the best way to get to your answer. But more complex stuff goes to ChatGPT, which means Siri can handle a lot more stuff than I’m used to throwing at it. Ask it “What are some cocktails I can make with whiskey and lemon juice?” and you’ll get a short list of options with descriptions. Old Siri will basically just show you a Google search snippet.

🟦 AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini regularly get things wrong and make things up. But I’ve started using them more and more as a starting point when I need help with something and I’m basically clueless. I actually downloaded Gemini (by way of Google’s iOS app) to the iPhone 16 I’ve been using because I got tired of opening it in a browser. As long as you don’t blindly trust what the AI tells you, it’s a handy way to get pointed in the right direction. Apple has put some nice privacy protections around your use of ChatGPT. OpenAI is “required to process your request solely for the purpose of fulfilling it and does not store your request or any responses it provides,” Apple states. The information won’t be used to train AI models, either. If you sign in to your OpenAI account, your requests are saved in your ChatGPT history and all of OpenAI’s terms apply. But you don’t need an OpenAI account at all if you don’t want or have one. I appreciate that.

The company has released the first developer beta of iOS 18.2, and it adds tools like the ability to generate emoji with Genmoji and images with Image Playground, more AI-powered writing features, integration with ChatGPT, Visual Intelligence to search with your camera on iPhone 16 phones, and more, according to 9to5Mac. With this beta, Apple Intelligence is now supported in more regions, too.

🟦 iOS 18.2 will bring the second batch of Apple Intelligence features to users. The first batch, including features like a slightly smarter Siri and notification summaries, is set to launch next week with the official release of iOS 18.1. Apple debuted its planned Apple Intelligence features at WWDC 2024 in June, but at the time, it announced that the upgrades would be arriving in stages. One of the most impressive planned features is for Siri to understand what’s happening on your iPhone’s screen and take actions based on your requests, but that’s still not here, even in iOS 18.2. Apple has also released the first macOS Sequoia 15.2 developer beta with new Apple Intelligence tools as well, 9to5Mac reports. Genmoji apparently isn’t included in that beta.

🚨 Why AI companies are dropping the doomerism

🟦 The latest AI manifesto, from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, says a lot about the industry’s current moment. On today’s episode of Decoder, we’re going to try and figure out “digital god.” I figured we’ve been doing this long enough, let’s just get after it. Can we build an artificial intelligence so powerful that it changes the world and answers all of our questions? The AI industry has decided the answer is yes. In September, OpenAI’s Sam Altman published a blog post claiming we’ll have superintelligent AI in “a few thousand days.” And earlier this month, Dario Amodei, the CEO of OpenAI competitor Anthropic, published a 14,000-word post laying out what exactly he thinks such a system will be capable of when it arrives, which he says could be as soon as 2026.

🟦 What’s fascinating is that the visions laid out in both posts are so similar — they both promise dramatic superintelligent AI that will bring massive improvements to work, to science and healthcare, and even to democracy and prosperity. Digital god, baby. But while the visions are similar, the companies are, in many ways, openly opposed: Anthropic is the original OpenAI defection story. Dario and a cohort of fellow researchers left OpenAI in 2021 after becoming concerned with its increasingly commercial direction and approach to safety, and they created Anthropic to be a safer, slower AI company. And the emphasis was really on safety until recently; just last year, a major New York Times profile of the company called it the “white-hot center of A.I. doomerism.”

🟦 But the launch of ChatGPT, and the generative AI boom that followed, kicked off a colossal tech arms race, and now, Anthropic is as much in the game as anyone. It’s taken in billions in funding, mostly from Amazon, and built Claude, a chatbot and language model to rival OpenAI’s GPT-4. Now, Dario is writing long blog posts about spreading democracy with AI. So what’s going on here? Why is the head of Anthropic suddenly talking so optimistically about AI, when he was previously known for being the safer, slower alternative to the progress-at-all-costs OpenAI? Is this just more AI hype to court investors? And if AGI is really around the corner, how are we even measuring what it means for it to be safe? To break it all down, I brought on Verge senior AI reporter Kylie Robison to discuss what it means, what’s going on in the industry, and whether we can trust these AI leaders to tell us what they really think.

🚨 Penguin Random House books now explicitly say ‘no’ to AI training

🟦 The copyright page on new books and reprints now says they can’t be used or reproduced ‘for the purpose of training artificial intelligence.’ Book publisher Penguin Random House is putting its stance on AI training in print. The standard copyright page on both new and reprinted books will now say, “No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any manner for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies or systems,” according to a report from The Bookseller spotted by Gizmodo

🟦 The clause also notes that Penguin Random House “expressly reserves this work from the text and data mining exception” in line with the European Union’s laws. The Bookseller says that Penguin Random House appears to be the first major publisher to account for AI on its copyright page. What gets printed on that page might be a warning shot, but it also has little to do with actual copyright law. The amended page is sort of like Penguin Random House’s version of a robots.txt file, which websites will sometimes use to ask AI companies and others not to scrape their content. But robots.txt isn’t a legal mechanism; it’s a voluntarily-adopted norm across the web.

🟦 Copyright protections exist regardless of whether the copyright page is slipped into the front of the book, and fair use and other defenses (if applicable!) also exist even if the rights holder says they do not. The Verge contacted Penguin Random House for more information but didn’t immediately hear back. In August, Penguin Random House published a statement saying that the publisher will “vigorously defend the intellectual property that belongs to our authors and artists.” Not all book publishers are cautious about AI, as academic publishers like Wiley, Oxford University Press ,and Tailor & Francis have already formed AI training deals.

🚨 Truth Terminal becomes the first AI crypto millionaire

🔹 Truth Terminal, the chaotic bot mixing philosophy, internet lore and meme token degeneracy, is now a crypto millionaire. The known wallets belonging to the bot now contain close to $1.5M, spread across 93 tokens. The X account of became an overnight millionaire after receiving even more new meme tokens in its portfolio. Some of those tokens also became overnight sensations because of their affiliation with the unhinged bot. 

🔹 Overnight, the known wallets of Truth Terminal kept receiving new meme assets, while the old holdings kept charting all-time highs. The wallet dedicated to Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) hovers just under $1M in value since all tokens are extremely volatile. The other known wallet, containing 25 tokens, is valued at $490K. Traders are already trying to track all the tokens linked to Truth Terminal.

🔹 The memes and tickers linked to the bot are extremely risky, but also hold the probability of getting ahead, while older memes fall out of fashion. Besides the growth of GOAT, which made up $800K of the bot’s portfolio, the other token that popped off was Fartcoin. The asset was just hours old as of October 18, rallying from $0.0005 to $0.005 in its initial trading. The token has just $288K in its most active liquidity pair and may be just starting out. The coin’s ASCII logo and its slogan also suggest AI-style branding, with the hope of producing the most absurd meme possible. 

🔹 Truth Terminal may continue to produce token ideas when prompted, complete with ASCII art. The tokensthemselves may be deployed by anonymous traders, stealing the bot’s idea. When prompted the right way, Token terminal even imagined a smell meme token. The bot’s creator does not endorse any of the assets and continues to claim Truth Terminal exists simply for entertainment and exploratory value.

🚨 ChatGPT has a Windows app now

🟦 OpenAI is testing a ChatGPT app for Windows— but it’s only available to paid users for now. You can download an early version of the app from then Microsoft Store. Just like the Mac version of the app. ChatGPT on Windows lets you ask the AI-powered chatbot questions in a dedicated window that you can keep open alongside your apps. You can quickly access the app by using the Alt + Space shortcut.

🟦 It also lets you upload files and photos to ChatGPT and comes with access to a preview of OpenAI’s o1 model capable of “reasoning.” The app is still missing some capabilities, however, such as advanced voice mode. Shortly after OpenAI launched its ChatGPT app on Mac in June, a developer spotted a security, vulnerability that stored conversations in plain text. OpenAI has since fixed this issue and now encrypts locally stored data. Even though only ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu subscribers can use the app on Windows, OpenAI says it plans on bringing it to everyone later this year.

🚨 Google strikes a deal with a nuclear startup to power its AI data centers

🔹 Google is turning to nuclear energy to help power its AI drive. On Monday, the company said it will partner with the startup Kairos Power to build seven small nuclear reactors in the US. The deal targets adding 500 megawatts of nuclear power from the small modular reactors (SMRs) by the decade’s end. The first is expected to be up and running by 2030, with the remainder arriving through 2035.

🔹 It’s the first-ever corporate deal to buy nuclear power from SMRs. Small modular reactors are smaller than existing reactors. Their components are built inside a factory rather than on-site, which can help lower construction costs compared to full-scale plants. Kairos will need the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve design and construction permits for the plans. The startup has already received approval for a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, with an online date targeted for 2027.

🔹 The company already builds test units (without nuclear-fuel components) at a development facility in Albuquerque, NM, where it assesses components, systems and its supply chain. The companies didn’t announce the financial details of the arrangement. Google says the deal’s structure will help to keep costs down and get the energy online sooner. “By procuring electricity from multiple reactors — what experts call an ‘orderbook’ of reactors — we will help accelerate the repeated reactor deployments that are needed to lower costs and bring Kairos Power’s technology to market more quickly,” Michael Terrell, Google’s senior director for energy and climate, wrote in a blog post. “This is an important part of our approach to scale the benefits of advanced technologies to more people and communities, and builds on our previous efforts.”

🔹 The AI boom - and the enormous amount of data center power it requires - has led to several deals between Big Tech companies and the nuclear industry. In September, Microsoft forged an agreement with Constellation Energy to bring a unit of the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania back online. In March, Amazon bought a nuclear-powered data center from Talen Energy.

🚨 Anthropic’s CEO thinks AI will lead to a utopia — he just needs a few billion dollars first

🟦 If you want to raise ungodly amounts of money, you better have some godly reasons. That’s what Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei laid out for us on Friday in more than 14,000 words: otherworldly ways in which artificial general intelligence (AGI, though he prefers to call it “powerful AI”) will change our lives. In the blog, titled “Machines of Loving Grace,” he envisions a future where AI could compress 100 years of medical progress into a decade, cure mental illnesses like PTSD and depression, upload your mind to the cloud, and alleviate poverty. At the same time, it’s reported that Anthropic is hoping to raise fresh funds at a $40 billion valuation.

🟦 Today’s AI can do exactly none of what Amodei imagines. It will take, by his own admission, hundreds of billions of dollars worth of compute to train AGI models, built with trillions of dollars worth of data centers, drawing enough energy from local power grids to keep the lights on for millions of homes. Not to mention that no one is 100 percent sure it’s possible. Amodei says himself: “Of course no one can know the future with any certainty or precision, and the effects of powerful AI are likely to be even more unpredictable than past technological changes, so all of this is unavoidably going to consist of guesses.”

🟦 AI execs have mastered the art of grand promises before massive fundraising. Take OpenAI’s Sam Altman, whose “The Intelligence Age” blog preceded a staggering $6.6 billion round. In Altman’s blog, he stated that the world will have superintelligence in “a few thousand days” and that this will lead to “massive prosperity.” It’s a persuasive performance: paint a utopian future, hint at solutions to humanity’s deepest fears — death, hunger, poverty — then argue that only by removing some redundant guardrails and pouring in unprecedented capital can we achieve this techno-paradise. It’s brilliant marketing, leveraging our greatest hopes and anxieties while conveniently sidestepping the need for concrete proof.

🟦 The timing of this blog also highlights just how fierce the competition is. As Amodei points out, a 14,000-word utopian manifesto is pretty out of step for Anthropic. The company was founded after Amodei and others left OpenAI over safety concerns, and it has cultivated a reputation for sober risk assessment rather than starry-eyed futurism. It’s why the company continues to poach safety researchers from OpenAI. Even in last week’s post, he insists Anthropic will prioritize candid discussions of AI risks over seductive visions of a techno-utopia.

🟦 It’s an interesting time to be in the language business: if there’s anything the current state of AI tech can do, it’s babble away in different languages with people who aren’t quite fluent in what they’re hearing. That means there are lots of opportunities to enhance a product like Duolingo with AI, and Luis and I talked about the new features in something called Duolingo Max, which offers chat conversations with some characters and even video calls with an AI avatar named Lily. I wanted to talk about all of that, but I also wanted to talk to Luis about learning generally. If you’re like me, you’ve stopped and started using Duolingo several times; if you’re an overachiever, you’ve got a streak going and might even have a streak to maintain today. That streak is the key, and you’ll hear Luis come back to that as a big idea several times.

🟦 Engagement is the key, he says, because simply showing up is the cornerstone of actually making progress with language learning. You can’t teach someone who isn’t there, so over time, Duolingo has become more and more of a game, because people like to play games. But there are real conflicts between gamification and actual learning. Luis is happy to admit that that conflict exists, and he’s given it a lot of thought. For him, the gamification is the important part because not only does it bring you back to Duolingo, keeping the business humming along nicely, but he says it also produces the results in language proficiency that Duolingo is aiming for. Luis got pretty deep into explaining where the money comes from. As you might guess, it’s from iPhone users in wealthier countries like the United States. And some technical decisions Duolingo made very early on mean the iOS version takes priority — it can take a year or more for features to roll out on the Android version of the app.

🟦 But Duolingo is a global product, where the biggest chunk of learners are actually trying to learn English — and those users are way more likely to use an Android phone and to want or need a free version of the product. There are a lot of tensions here, and you’ll hear Luis talk about his own childhood in a poorer country and how that informs his decisions.

This feature will likely be able to capture a short "clip" from a voice conversation and make it sharable. Currently not working yet. Considering the success of Audio Overviews from NotebookLM and OpenAI's rebranding plans - this may be an interesting viral marketing hack for ChatGPT.
