Foldable Smartphones: New Devices, New Opportunities

Mobile phones have evolved dramatically, with displays growing from 1.5–2.5 inches pre iPhone to 6.1–6.8 inches today. However, this growth has practical limits, as larger screens compromise single-handed use and portability. It has led to mobile-device specialization, with a range of sizes from large tablets to tiny smartwatches, each with different benefits and use cases.

Recently, a new type of smartphone that leverages the technology of bendable screens has emerged; the foldable smartphone may reduce the need to own multiple mobile devices.

However, there are some cases where you can consider alternatives, such as creating a more visual interface or presenting data in a more informative way.

I will discuss alternatives to tables, when and how to use them.

Is WCAG 2 flawed? A better way to determine text contrast for readability

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for readability, has always been a good way to ensure content on digital products is accessible. However, if you go deeper into the readability rabbit hole, you will find it’s far from perfect.

WCAG 2 is designed to be user-friendly and easily understandable for everyone. However, its simplicity is also its major drawback. It only considers the luminance contrast of colors, disregarding how humans perceive them. In other words, WCAG 2’s mathematical approach lacks perceptual accuracy and fails to align with human perception.

This method can lead to issues for readers in certain situations. It is unsurprising, considering that WCAG has been around for over 15 years. While it has served its purpose well, it’s now time to embrace a more effective approach.

UI spacing cheat sheet: a complete guide

I’ve noticed that many designers rely solely on intuition when it comes to spacing, and it’s not surprising. Correct spacing may appear simple, but it’s a skill that requires practice to master.

Moreover, every product has its unique spacing system, and no rigid rules govern spacing. Instead, there are still best practices to follow.

That’s when the 4 or 8-point grid systems come into play. They bring clarity and simplicity by limiting your options and making your life easier. However, even with these systems, the rules can still be vague. You have to decide which spacing option works best for your design, be it 8, 12, or 16 points.

Maintaining design consistency can still be a challenge. In this article, I’ll introduce you to the 8-point grid system and show you how to better apply it dynamically in your designs.

What is Universal Design?

Universal Design is an inclusive design philosophy aiming to create products, services, and environments accessible and usable by as many people as possible, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life. This approach seeks to create solutions that meet the needs of people with diverse abilities, and it advocates for the inclusion of these considerations in the earliest stages of design.

The core of Universal Design lies in the recognition that each person has unique needs and abilities. The concept extends beyond mere accessibility for people with disabilities to encompass usable, equitable, and inclusive designs that benefit everyone. This philosophy is often summarized by the phrase, “the design of mainstream products, services, and environments in such a way that they can be used by all people to the greatest extent possible without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”

One of the key aspects of Universal Design is its seven principles, which serve as guidelines for designers and architects. These principles include:

Equitable Use: Designs should be useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
Flexibility in Use: Accommodating a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.
Simple and Intuitive Use: Use of the design should be easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.
Perceptible Information: The design should communicate necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.
Tolerance for Error: Minimizing hazards and adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.
Low Physical Effort: The design can be used efficiently, comfortably, and with a minimum of fatigue.
Size and Space for Approach and Use: Providing appropriate size and space for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the user’s body size, posture, or mobility.
These principles highlight the importance of considering the full range of human diversity and the different contexts in which people use products and services. Universal Design is not a one-size-fits-all solution but rather a dynamic process that requires ongoing assessment and adaptation.

In summary, Universal Design is about creating an inclusive world that accommodates everyone, making daily life more manageable and promoting equality. It’s a sustainable approach that benefits society as a whole by reducing the need for special accommodations and by making mainstream products and environments accessible to as many people as possible.

How to Write UX/UI Design Case Studies That Boost Your Portfolio and Get You Hired

The term “case study” sounds a little boring, doesn’t it? What if, instead, it were called a “design story”? Well, that’s exactly how you should think of it! Approach your UX/UI design case studies like stories, not just a list of tasks you completed. You will not only make your portfolio easier and more enjoyable to create, but you will engage the reader and leave them wanting more. Give hiring managers structure, intrigue, and emotion as you tell your design successes. You’ll find yourself preparing to interview for your dream job in no time.

Bad Design vs. Good Design: 5 Examples We Can Learn From

Looking at examples of bad design alongside counter-examples of good design is not only fun but also draws important lessons for designers. They highlight pitfalls for designers to avoid and let us understand how to translate design theories into solutions that work in the real world. Jared Spool, the American writer, researcher and usability expert, once said: “Good design, when it’s done well, becomes invisible. It’s only when it’s done poorly that we notice it.” So, let’s look at five examples of obviously bad designs, shine the light on how good design makes it work, and distill some lessons so we can all create great and invisible experiences for our users.

Rules of UI design

09 Oct, 08:50

Interface scanning

Users typically scan interfaces rather than reading every detail, and their eyes are drawn to key elements like headings, buttons, images, and highlighted areas. They often follow familiar patterns, such as the F-shaped or Z-shaped scanning patterns, where they focus on the top, left, and prominent elements before moving downward.

The brain processes visual information quickly, prioritizing recognizable elements like icons, familiar layouts, or large text. Users focus on completing their tasks, so they gravitate toward anything that looks like it can help them achieve their goal quickly, such as a call-to-action button. Their attention is often divided, meaning they filter out what seems irrelevant, focusing only on what stands out as essential or actionable.

As a designer, you can draw users' attention to key elements by using several visual techniques:

🔸Contrast: Use contrasting colors, sizes, or shapes to make important elements like buttons or calls to action stand out.

🔸Visual Hierarchy: Organize content with larger, bold fonts or prominent placement for critical information, guiding the user's eye to what’s most important.

🔸Whitespace: Adequate spacing around elements makes them stand out more, giving the interface a clean and organized look.

🔸Consistency: Consistently used colors and patterns for clickable elements (like buttons or links) help users recognize them quickly.

🔸Movement: Subtle animations or hover effects can grab attention and guide users' focus to interactive elements.

🔸Affordances: Design elements to suggest functionality—like a button looking “clickable” or a form field looking “typeable”—to naturally direct the user's actions.

Some properties of color

▫️Hue refers to the base color on the color wheel, such as red, blue, green, or yellow.
It’s what we often mean when we ask, "What color is that?" It distinguishes colors from one another.
▫️Brightness refers to how light or dark a color is. It’s the perceived intensity of light reflected from a color.
A color can be bright (closer to white) or dark (closer to black). This property is important for defining contrast in designs.
▫️Saturation refers to the intensity or purity of a color.
High saturation means the color is vivid and pure, while low saturation means the color is more muted or washed out. It describes how much gray is mixed into the hue.
▫️Chroma refers to the purity or vividness of a color, distinguishing it from black, white, or gray. It’s closely related to saturation but more specifically describes how far a color deviates from grayscale. A color with high chroma is pure and vivid, while low chroma means the color is more neutral or dull.

▫️Hyphen: Regular word use (e.g., compound words).

▫️En Dash: Used for ranges and connections.

▫️Em Dash: Adds emphasis or marks a break in thought.

▫️Minus: Reserved for mathematical operations.
