Making Smart Choices in Cadre Preference: The Art of Redundancy

When filling out cadre preferences, it's crucial to strategize effectively. A key technique? The use of 'dummy choices' to streamline your options.

1️⃣ What's a Dummy Choice?

Simply put, it's about placing a cadre with a lower closing rank after one with a higher closing rank. This ensures the lower-ranked cadre won't impact your final cadre allocation.

2️⃣ Inter-Zonal vs. Intra-Zonal Choices

Inter-Zonal: For example, MP cadre after Uttar Pradesh (UP) as an outsider is not logical as MP will ALWAYS close before UP

Intra-Zonal: Similarly, opting for Gujarat (GJ) before MP follows the same logic.

3️⃣ How to Use This Strategy?

Divide your choices into 'preferred' and 'anti-preferred' zones.

Preferred Zones Avoid wasting choices on cadres in these zones as dummy choices. For instance, don't place MP after UP if you're eyeing the Western Zone.

Anti-Preference Zones Select popular cadres with fewer seats from these zones to make them redundant. This way, you can bypass zones like South by choosing Karnataka (KN) after UP insider, effectively making them dummy choices.

🔍 Personalized Strategy
Remember, this approach requires a nuanced understanding of your preferences, category, and state-wise analysis. It's not straightforward, but it's worth it.

Make sure you ask your Mentors about cadre choices.

Happy cadre choosing! 😊

Prepare Smart, Not just Hard.

Hobby Specificity and Hobby Prioritizations

Hobby specificity exists on a spectrum, ranging from very specific and niche to broad and open-ended.

For example:
Reading → Reading Fiction → Reading Thrillers → Reading J.K. Rowling → Reading Harry Potter.

Mentioning the appropriate level of specificity can significantly influence your interview, leading to an additional 5–7 minutes of discussion, which may translate into a gain of 15–20 marks.

A hobby that is too narrow may bore the interviewer or give the impression of rigidity, while a hobby that is too broad can put you in a risky position.

Make sure you maintain the right level of specificity in your hobbies.

Club right degree of specificity in hobbies with right prioritizations (To be discusses next) and gain an edge of 15-20 marks easily!

Prepare Smart, Not just Hard.

Don't be yourself. Be the person the board wants you to be!

We know this might not be what you want to hear, but it’s something you should hear.

Maximum Interview Score = f(Who you are, How you present yourself)

Undoubtedly, the maximum score you can achieve depends on who you truly are. However, more than that it's about how you present yourself to the board.

You have the advantage of information asymmetry on your side. Ensure that your DAF leverages this to project the image of an ideal civil servant.

It's a humble request, don't fill cadres, hobbies, work-ex etc randomly. It can make or break your chances of getting into the final list.

Acads IFoS 2023 Transcripts Compilation Vol 1

Previous years' transcripts offer best way to understandthe minds of UPSC interviewers. When it comes to IFoS, finding transcript questions is challenging—let alone their answers.

For the first time, Acads presents not just compilation of transcripts but also "Enabling Keywords", a unique approach to IFoS interview preparation

How to use this?

No, don’t just read it.

There is no right or wrong way. But here is something that we suggest.

1. Go through the index and find the most relevant transcript first

2. While reading a question, don’t directly jump to “Enabling Keywords”, think of your own keywords first.

3. Think of potential follow up questions. Try to understand the interviewers' mind.

4. Once you learn the art of “Enabling Keywords” start practicing giving complete but precise answer!

Feel free to come up with your way of using this. We don’t mind :)

Why your CSE Interview preparation might not work for IFoS interviews?

Preparing for the IFS Interview stage? It’s not the same as the CSE interview, and understanding the differences is key!

What Makes IFS Interviews Unique?

Specialized vs Generalist: IFS focuses on expertise, unlike the broader CSE approach.

Knowledge vs Personality: IFS prioritizes in-depth knowledge, while CSE leans more on personality.

4 vs 5 Members: IFS panels have 4 members, making every interaction more critical.

Why Acads IAS?

At Acads IAS, we specialize in decoding these differences. With expert mentors and tailored guidance, we’ll help you excel in the small but vital aspects that matter most.

1. The forest area alone doesn't make a cadre good. What other factors are involved?

2. What are some cadre who are considered bad but are in fact one of the best cadres? The best part is you can have them as fall back cadres to avoid your anti-preferences!

3. How to minimize chances of going to a not so preferred cadre?

4. What are those cadres which are considered good but that's just a myth?

5. Why is it important to not go by the general notion of good and bad and make your own choices?

Best of luck for tomorrow's exam.

Tomorrow's papers are going to be the easiest of all. The main problem is not going to be about the difficulty but about boredom.

You won't feel like giving your best. Paper will look boring.

The moment you will see precise and letter, your brain will unconsciously think of either X or CSE English qualifying paper and all your enthusiasm will vanish without even you realising it.

GK paper will feel like a boring board exam paper, but not as boring as English.

The good thing it's going to be your chance to gain an edge. Don't let the boredom distract you from your aim!

One question at a time.
Keep the paper fun.
Just focus on enjoying the paper.
Show examiner how amazing you are.

And before you realize you'll be in LBSNAA!

Tackling Species and Silviculture of Trees

Here is the template which should be used if you are unable to recall anything. It will help you fetch at least average marks.

Most Important: First memorise headers for all e.g. Distribution, Locality Factors (B-TECH, WLMRT etc). This way you'll have at least 20 headers (Including PIC TC WG for Tending Operations).

How to generate points

Can be generated using 4 ways

1. Derived from memorized facts. Example if you know distribution you'll be able to write something about Temp, Rainfall etc.

2. Generic Ones - Safe to use. E.g. Natural Regeneration using Seed, Tending Operations

3. Most probable Ones - e.g. Light Demander for 70-80% trees

4. Can take Chance - Evergreen/Deciduous

This is no way a full proof method but enough to secure average marks.

Only for those who are planning to quit.

Forestry Optional

Don't focus on scoring the highest or trying to write the best answer in the paper.

Just make sure you can write 2 specific points for any keyword in the syllabus. Even if you can complete the paper with all generic points, to it will help you score 180-200 marks

- Focus on section B of both the papers.

- Memorise definition of most common keywords like socioforestry, agri forestry etc.

- Remember just the basis of differences in case of policies (2B) and then use gradation to generate points for all 3 policies.

- Make 2 lines notes for every act - WPA, FCA etc

- For each technical term make short notes with just the keywords and definitions

- Memorise most common species - Neem, Jamun, Peepal, Banyan etc and use it for all MTP

- Join any of the toppers notes on acads.com - https://t.me/IndianForestServices/125 and read them keeping the above point in mind.

Remember, don't compare IFoS optionals preparation with your CSE preparation. Just don't quit. To be honest, you wouldn't be able to do anything productive in the next 10 days. Instead of wasting time on speculations and insider info, better focus on the exam!

How to fail in the IFoS optionals?

One sure shot way to fail in IFoS optionals is to prepare it like CSE optionals!

Seems counter-intuitive? Let us explain.

In CSE any successful candidate devotes at least 8-10 months for the optional. Hence, one manages to cover every part of the syllabus. PYQs and resources are easily available. Everyone does 5-10 years PYQs.

If you look at Acads hierarchy Pyramid of Marks - CSE people operate at Level 3 and Level 4!

Not so much in IFoS optionals - even forestry toppers complete hardly 70-80% of syllabus.
PYQs and right resources are not easily available. In this case even if you can just complete PYQs properly you are already the topper!

If you look at Acads hierarchy Pyramid of Marks - IFoS optionals candidates operate at Level 1 & Level 2!

In fact, following CSE approach not just weakens but ruins your chances completely

Just 3 simple steps to ace IFoS

1. Brainstorm 10 Years PYQs
2. Have Compact Notes
3. Write 2 FLTs

Easy. Isn't it?

Acads IFoS Priority Matrix!

The whole scope of IFoS Optionals can be divided into 4 quadrants.

Quadrant 1: Not in Syllabus, Not in PYQ

Despite being so obvious that this should be avoided, many coaching institutes make candidate study this. And this costs an aspirant his precious attempt. Just Remember, AVOID THIS QUADRANT AT ALL COSTS.

Quadrant 2: In Syllabus, but NOT in PYQS

This is definitely relevant for CSE. But in IFoS it can be skipped without compomising too much on marks. In fact, Study smart approach advotes keeping it for the end.

Quadrant 3: In PYQs, but NOT in Syllabus

Every year one or two questions appear randomly out of nowhere. There is no point worrying about such questions. They can't be predicted. Period.

Quadrant 4: In PYQs, In Syllabus

Everyone knows it's important. But hardly anyone does it diligently. Don't even think about looking at any other quadrant till you are done with this quadrant.

Enrol Now into Quadrant 4 with Acads!
