โ Alstonia scholaris, commonly called blackboard tree, scholar tree, milkwood, or devil's tree in English, is an evergreen tropical tree in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae).
โ It is called 'Saptaparna' in India. It has been cited in the Charaka and Sushrutha Samhithas.
โ Distribution: This tree is widespread across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and southern China, thriving in tropical and subtropical climates.
Features:
โ It grows to a height of 10โ20 meters, sometimes reaching up to 40 meters.
โ It has dark grey bark and a crown of simple, whorled leaves arranged in clusters of seven, giving rise to the name "saptaparni" (meaning "seven leaves").
โ Flowers: Small, fragrant, and greenish-white flowers bloom in clusters during late autumn and early winter.
Uses:
โ The bark, leaves, and other parts of Alstonia scholaris have been used in traditional medicine for treating respiratory conditions, fever, skin disorders, and digestive issues.
โ The soft, lightweight wood of the blackboard tree was historically used for making writing slates and blackboards, which is how it got the common name "blackboard tree."
โ IUCN status: Least Concern

โ The new industrial cities will be developed as greenfield smart cities of global standards, built "ahead of demand" on the 'plug-n-play' and 'walk-to-work' concepts
โ Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the projects will feature multi-modal connectivity infrastructure, ensuring seamless movement of people, goods, and services
โ NICDP is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, with an estimated 1 million direct jobs and upto 3 million indirect jobs being created through planned industrialization

India has launched its fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) at the Ship Building Center Visakhapatnam.
The submarine, with 75% indigenous content, is part of the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project, designed to enhance national security.
Equipped with K-4 ballistic missiles, capable of hitting targets up to 3,500 km.
