A team of students from Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) CDE2311 took part in the Advanced Category of the 17th International Space Challenge (ISC) 2024. The theme for this year was โ€œLiving in Spaceโ€ and students had to design a life science experiment that not only pushes the boundaries of our understanding of living in space but also holds the potential to improve lives on Earth for humans. Our students received the IDDK Award for their submission titled โ€œSatelabโ€, a 12U CubeSat to explore whether the introduction of tardigrade-derived DNA into human stem cells can enhance their survival and functionality in space. The IDDK award is an industry award to teams for them to bring their case study proposal to reality.

Our 5 Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) students who developed a species assessment mapper (SAM) solution for their 1-year long design project, was awarded the overall winner for the advanced category in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Innovation Quest organised by Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Space Faculty! The GNSS Innovation Quest is an annual nation-wide engineering competition for students in Singapore. Using advanced satellite and robotics technologies, students create innovative engineering solutions that can improve lives of fellow Singaporeans. Congratulations to our NUS Team BumbleBee, who are the Champions at the just concluded Maritime RobotX Challenge 2024 (3 to 9 November) at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, USA!!!

Our NUS Team BumbleBee achieved the overall first place, top design documentation, best website, best video, best system assessment and best presentation! Our team is the first team to win the Championship twice, since the Challenge started in 2014 in Singapore. Our team last won it in 2018 at Hawaii.

The Maritime RobotX Challenge is an international competition designed to foster student interest in autonomous robotic systems operating in the maritime domain, with an emphasis on the science and engineering of cooperative autonomy. UWB RTLS Demo

Hi everyone!

Weโ€™re excited to showcase a demo on the Ultra-Wideband Real-Time Location System (UWB RTLS) this week.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Sandbox @ the Innovation and Design Hub (EA, Level 4, Room #04-06)
๐Ÿ“… Date: 25th October 2024 (Friday)
โฐ Time: 11:00 AM โ€“ 11:30 AM

About the Project:
This project implements a UWB Real-Time Location System (RTLS) with powered anchors and tags. The hardware is based on the DW1000 module, and the tagโ€™s location is published to ROS2 via micro ROS for easy interfacing and visualization.

Use Case of UWB RTLS:
โ€ข asset tracking
โ€ข sensor fusion with LiDAR
โ€ข UAV localisation

Students are welcome to leverage the current implementation in their own projects if needed.

Current Capabilities and Limitations:
โ€ข Supports multiple anchors and a single tag (at least 3 anchors for 2D multilateration and 4 for 3D).
โ€ข Interfaces with ROS2.
โ€ข Achieves ยฑ30 cm accuracy โ€” a major improvement over the previously implemented BLE RSSI-based localization, which had ยฑ3 m accuracy.

Note: This project is still in its infancy stage, and there are many improvements that can be done.
