Stop Google’s unfair restriction on Custom ROMs

Google's Play Integrity API blocks Custom ROM users from accessing essential apps and features, citing security as the reason. However, this policy unfairly impacts the Android modding community, which enhances devices through updates, bug fixes and customization long after manufacturers stop support.

By enforcing these limitations, Google reinforces its monopoly over Android, prioritizing control over user choice. It’s time for Google to allow Custom ROMs to pass Play Integrity, letting users fully utilize their devices.

Honest opinion on HyperOS 2

I’ve seen major tech channels reviewing HyperOS 2, and I’ll admit, the animation concepts are cool. But you know when you spot some serious lag on basic stuff? Just opening the control panel has lag. Closing and reopening an app = lag.

Xiaomi's specialty seems to be loading up Android with heavy skins.

Take ColorOS 15, for instance: what’s going on there? Smooth animations, incredible performance. No lag! Why is it so hard for Xiaomi to make something lightweight like that?

HyperOS honestly feels more like an excuse to try and make a comeback. I’m talking about the name here, because let's face it, it's just a “polished” MIUI. There are still tons of MIUI elements lingering in the OS.

And it’s frustrating because Xiaomi constantly compares it to Apple’s iOS. So far, all I could do was laugh. These aren’t issues that would ruin daily use, but they don’t bring any real improvement either and meanwhile, other companies like Huawei and Oppo are doing better.

In case you didn’t know, Xiaomi itself calls these “Custom ROMs.”

HyperOS 2 | They’re calling this "the new control center"

Can you honestly see anything new?

What really changed are a few subtle tweaks and some new animations in the system, but that’s about it! And these animations only run smoothly on high-end devices, because we all know how MIUI is (tons of skins masking Android).

Xiaomi seems to have the audacity to compare HyperOS 2.0 with iOS 18

The "new features" of HyperOS 2.0 will be announced soon. There was a closed event where, during the presentation, they made this comparison.

- What a joke, right?

Someone told me that in HyperOS 2.0, you'll be able to rearrange the tiles in the Control Center, just like in iOS 18.

This is the Quick Settings from OneUI (Samsung). I like it, but something about it bothers me.

What would you change? Aside from the player, which is the most elegant and beautiful part of this QS. The concept is good, but it feels either incomplete or like something outdated. Am I the only one who thinks that?

Channel status:
For now, I'll keep posting some updates on the Ginkgo/Willow projects.

Hey,

I've noticed that a lot of the compilers have disappeared, leaving just a small number of devs who were keeping the RN8 up to date, like 2 or 3 people. Most of them (and practically everyone) switched phones and got something better.

Because of that, many have abandoned Ginkgo/Willow. But you know how it is—people disappear, but there's always someone who steps up to keep a project going.

The RN8 is really dynamic, and its survival definitely doesn't depend on Xiaomi. In fact, the company has pretty much ditched the device. So it's up to independent devs to keep it up to date.

There's already support up to Android 15.

- How far can it go?

The only real limitation might be kernel compatibility down the road, which could prevent the device from getting the latest OS updates.

Is anyone here still rocking the trusty Redmi Note 8?

For those running custom ROMs, how’s the performance and usability holding up? If you’ve already upgraded, what new device did you switch to and why?

And for anyone still thinking about making the switch, what’s your ideal next smartphone and what’s motivating you to upgrade?

Drop a comment, it's free!

Maki's Update

Hey everyone, how’s it going? I’m doing well.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to keep updating my projects frequently anymore. I’ve already explained the reason: I’m studying. There’s a slight chance I might release something, but it’s pretty slim, almost non-existent. Like an Android 16 situation.

Right now, I’m really busy with studies, real-life projects, programming, and work. I don’t even have time to play games, just to give you an idea. I can only catch a break on weekends.

Once again, thanks so much to everyone who’s still here, downloading the ROMs, following my projects, and discovering things. I really appreciate it.

Honestly, I’d love to keep going, but I’d have to become a slacker to have that much free time (no offense) haha.

I’ll drop by every now and then, post something, or share something new. It’s not a total goodbye.

Take care,
Maki.

Hi, Maki here.

Just stopping by to share some information. As you know, I no longer have time to keep my projects updated, and it’s for a good reason. My exams (from the programming logic and algorithms module) went well.

But I still have a lot to study, and every month I’ll need to complete assignments and take exams.Because of this, I won’t be able to dedicate myself to the Ginkgo projects; it’s just not possible. With work and studies, I end up exhausted, not to mention the real life projects. I hope you’re all doing well and making the most of your time. I still have the RN8, but it’s no longer my main device.

You can still help me by downloading the ROMs, even if you don’t use them. Just clicking the links and downloading is a contribution I’m really grateful for.
