Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, a prominent figure in conservation efforts in Assam, has been awarded the prestigious Whitley Gold Award for 2024, earning the title of "Green Oscar" recipient.

This recognition marks a significant achievement not only for Dr. Barman but also for Assam on the global conservation stage.

The Whitley Gold Award is revered as one of the highest honors in conservation, underscoring Dr. Barman's exceptional dedication to protecting the endangered greater adjutant, also known as Hargila, one of the rarest storks in the world. Her remarkable efforts have mobilized local women in Assam and garnered attention worldwide for the conservation of this species.

Six prestigious GI Tags have been granted to traditional crafts with support from NABARD, RO Guwahati, and facilitated by Padma Shri Dr. Rajani Kant, GI Expert.

This includes iconic items like Assam Bihu Dhol, Japi, Sarthebari Metal Craft, and more. These products, deeply rooted in history, support nearly one lakh people directly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the development of "Mission Divyastra" -- an indigenously developed, landmark weapons system that alters the country's geopolitic and strategic position and significantly changes the situation in southeast Asia. The Agni-5 MIRV missile, developed by defence research centre DRDO for over a decade, took its first flight today.

The new weapon system of DRDO (Defence Research Development Organisation) has Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which ensures that a single missile can deploy multiple war heads and hit targets at different locations simultaneously.

The technology is currently possessed by a handful of nations and with its test, India has joined the select club, said government sources. MIRVs have been developed by the US, UK, Russia, France and China.

Sources said the project was headed by a woman, whose identity is yet to be disclosed.

Appointment Process

Under the provisions outlined by the CEC and Other ECs (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) are appointed by a panel comprising the President upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee.

This Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, also includes the Leader of the Opposition in the House of the People (Lok Sabha) and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.
