Over 2,700 Ghanaian Students Defy Study Plans in Canada, Opt for Alternative Paths

A staggering number of Ghanaian students who traveled to Canada last year have reportedly refused to enroll in their designated universities. According to emerging details, approximately 2,700 students chose not to pursue their original study plans, sparking concerns and raising questions about the motivations behind this unexpected trend.

The students, who had obtained study visas to attend specific Canadian universities, seemingly had a change of heart upon arrival in the country. Instead of reporting to their assigned institutions, they opted to explore alternative educational or career opportunities.

The reasons behind this phenomenon are still unclear, but several factors could be contributing to this trend. Some possible explanations include:

Changing academic goals: Students may have reassessed their academic aspirations or career objectives, leading them to seek alternative programs or institutions that better align with their revised goals.

Cultural or social factors: The transition to a new country and culture can be daunting. Some students might have found it challenging to adapt to the Canadian academic environment, leading them to seek more familiar or supportive settings.

Economic or financial considerations: The cost of living and tuition fees in Canada can be substantial. Students may have found more affordable options or chosen to pursue vocational training or work opportunities instead.

The implications of this trend are multifaceted, with potential consequences for the students, their families, and the Canadian education system as a whole. As more information becomes available, it will be essential to understand the underlying reasons behind this phenomenon and its potential impact on future international student enrollments in Canada.

GES Warns Against Unauthorized BECE Registration Fees
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a stern warning to heads of basic schools over the imposition of unauthorized registration fees on final-year students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
In a press release dated February 12, 2025, GES emphasized that such fees are illegal and must be stopped immediately. The service has directed regional and district directors to monitor the situation and ensure compliance.
GES further instructed that any headteacher who has already collected unauthorized fees should refund the monies, warning that failure to do so will attract sanctions. The statement also reminded schools that late registration of candidates will not be allowed and urged adherence to the official registration timeline set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The general public has been advised to take note of this directive.

GES Rank Stagnation Hindering Career Growth

The Ghana Education Service (GES) faces widespread rank stagnation, particularly at the Deputy Director level, limiting career progression, financial stability, and effective use of expertise. Unlike other public services, such as the Ghana Police Service, GES ties promotions to leadership roles, leaving many professionals stuck. This stagnation reduces motivation, fosters inequity, and risks talent loss.

To address this, reforms are needed to separate ranks from positions, establish training programs, revise policies for fairness, and involve stakeholders like teacher unions in advocacy. Tackling this issue is essential to enhance staff welfare and strengthen the education system.

The Teacher Unions have raised concerns with the Ghana Education Service (GES) over key issues that threaten industrial harmony.

They oppose the taxation of the Digital Instruction Support Allowance, urge GES to provide a transitional period for teachers opting out of the TVET Service without fear or restrictions, and condemn the coercion of teachers to attend Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshops at exorbitant fees.

"Expired Rice Scandal: Ghanaian SHS Students' Health Jeopardized by Corruption and Negligence"

A recent parliamentary investigation has revealed a troubling case of corruption and negligence involving Ghana’s National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO). Approximately 15,000 bags of expired rice, imported by Lamens Investments Africa Limited, were re-packaged without expiration dates and distributed to Senior High Schools across Ghana, potentially endangering students' health. The expired rice, originally marked to expire in December 2023, was re-bagged as “Made-in-Ghana” to conceal its true origin and expiration.

This was done without FDA approval, violating public health regulations. The investigation implicates political figures connected to NAFCO, highlighting concerns over unchecked corruption in food safety for Ghana’s students.

ORGANISING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES IN SENIOR HIGH AND SENIOR HIGH TECHNICAL SCHOOLS (SH/SHTS)

The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to commend all staff of senior high and senior high technical schools for their dedication and commitment to the successful implementation of the new senior high school reforms.

While the trail phase is progressing smoothly, we have identified a concern regarding the attendance of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) by teachers, particularly those in schools operating transitional calendars. We have noted that some teachers are being required to attend PLCs during their vacation periods...

This issue has been bothering me for some time now.Collegues please help me handle this case.I've been wondering why SISO's stamp and sign SPIPs given to them by headteachers but don't go to the schools to inspect if what's written in the SPIP has been done? My headteacher has been going home with the school's capitation book for some time now and God being soo good he left it at the office last Friday and some of the teachers chanced on it.To our outmost suprise he has already prepared a SPIP on the capitation and base grant that came recently and everything in there were lies.Claiming some teachers were given money to buy padlocks, football, volleyball and a whole lot which are all lies. And he has written the name of some teachers as in charges and forged the signatures of those teachers including Smc president. How do we handle such case without putting ourselves in trouble?

"I think the value of a college education is somewhat overweighted. Too many people spend four years, accumulate a ton of debt and often don't have useful skills that they can apply afterwards.

I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters and that's a lot more important than having incremental political science majors.

I think we should not have this idea that in order to be successful you need a four year college degree."

— Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is known for his groundbreaking innovations in the tech and space industries. Musk, a self-taught entrepreneur, never completed his formal education at Stanford University, instead dropping out to pursue his ambitions. His experiences shape his views on education, as seen in this quote. Musk believes that traditional college education is not the only path to success, especially in a world where hands-on skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship can lead to high-impact careers. His stance advocates for alternative pathways, such as technical skills and trades, over accumulating debt through a college degree.

In the picture is a colleague teacher who tragically to.ok his own li.fe after battling depression. According to the story, he made the heartbreaking decision to e.nd his l.ife by throwing himself in front of a moving vehicle.

Here's a transcription of the note he wrote before the sad incident

"Dear Readers,

Thank you for pushing to find out. I choose to return to my maker as soon as possible. I had to do it because I didn't deserve to live. I failed woefully and nothing can solve any other mistake.

I've been a dead man since 2022 and I have struggled my way through, but as I gave my last worship and songs on earth to the Lord, I knew it was time to EXIT. Thank you family, hospice, church, Covenant brothers, uncles, sisters, and friends.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME! I FAILED! I have disappointed all of you and I can't defend my acts, but I accept responsibility. I have had 3 surgeries in my testicles and hidden to everyone.

Don’t cry for me but please help my family because they will need me.

Hmmm!

Sincerely,"

Dear colleagues, let's normalise checking up on one another. People are going through a lot. Depression is real. Life can take unexplainable and unexpected turns. Life can just decide to be unfair to you. But sui..cide is not an option. Seek help if you must. You are not alone.
