Col Ashutosh Sharma hailed from Parwana village in Bulandshahar district of Uttar Pradesh. Son of Shri Shambhu Dutt Pathak and Smt Sudha Sharma, he was born on 03 July 1975. He completed his schooling and graduated in Bulandshahar and attended the DAV Inter College. He was fascinated by Army life since his younger days and always dreamt of donning the Army uniform. Eventually, his dream came true when he got selected to join the Army through Combined Defence Services Examination. He was commissioned on 01 Sep 2001, into 19 Guards of the Brigade of Guards, an infantry Regiment known for its intrepid soldiers and numerous battle exploits.
After completing his training he served in various operational areas and gathered substantial field experience. He soon developed into a tough and gritty officer who led from the front and proved his mettle as a soldier on many occasions. For his act of bravery, he was awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry on 26 January 2018. In the following year in 2019, he shot, at close range, a terrorist who was rushing towards his men with a hidden grenade. He saved the lives of his men as well as personnel of the J&K Police. For this action, on 15 August 2019, when serving as the Commanding Officer of the 21st battalion, Rashtriya Rifles, he was awarded the bar to Sena Medal. By 2020, Col Ashutosh Sharma had been awarded, the โSena Medalโ two times for his commendable courage, gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty, indeed a rare honour for any Army officer.
Handwara Operation: 02 May 2020
During 2020, Col Ashutosh Sharma was serving with the 21 RR battalion deployed in J&K. He was functioning as the Commanding Officer of the battalion which was engaged in counter-insurgency operations in its area of operation(AOR). As a number of militants were active in its AOR, the unit troops had to maintain a very high state of preparedness at all times and had to undertake operations at short notice. Based on the information from the intelligence sources, about the presence of some hardcore militants in Wadarbala-Rajwara forests in the Kupwara district, the security forces decided to launch a joint combing operation on 01 May 2020, comprising the elements of the Army, CRPF and J&K Police. As planned the joint task force launched the operation on the morning of 01 May 2020, wherein the Army team comprised 21 RR troops led by Col Ashutosh Sharma. Besides the CO himself, the 21 RR team included the Company Commander Maj Anuj Sood, Naik Rajesh Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Singh, and few more soldiers.
As the team led by Col Ashutosh was returning from the massive combing operation in Wadarbala-Rajwara forests on 02 May 2020, it received inputs that 2-4 terrorists had taken refuge in a house in the nearby Chanjimulla hamlet. As per the information received, the terrorists clad in combat uniform had taken few civilians hostage in one of the houses. Col Ashutosh and his team immediately reached the site and swung into action. The terrorists were found to be hiding in two adjacent houses who fired at the troops on being challenged. A fierce gun-battle ensued thereafter lasting for several hours. During the drawn-out battle, Col Ashutosh and his men managed to eliminate two terrorists and also succeeded in extricating a number of civilians. However, during the heavy exchange of fire Col Ashutosh Sharma, Maj Anuj Sood, Naik Rajesh Kumar, and Lance Naik Dinesh Singh got severely injured. They later succumbed to their injuries and were martyred. Col Ashutosh Sharma was a valiant soldier and a fine officer, who led from the front like a true Commanding Officer and laid down his life in the line of his duty. Col Ashutosh Sharma was given the gallantry award, โSena Medalโ third time on 26 Jan 2021 for his outstanding courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice.

The Stonecutterโs Persistence
Once, there was a stonecutter who worked tirelessly every day. His job was to break massive rocks into smaller pieces using nothing but a hammer and chisel. The work was grueling, and progress often seemed slow.
One day, he stood before an enormous rock and began striking it. With each blow of his hammer, nothing seemed to happen. People passing by laughed at him, saying, โWhy waste your energy? That rock wonโt crack.โ
But the stonecutter ignored them. He kept striking the rock, blow after blowโ10, 50, 100 times. Still, there was no visible change. Yet, he didnโt stop.
Finally, on the 101st blow, the rock split into two perfect halves. A passerby who witnessed this was astonished and said, โYouโre incredible! You broke the rock in a single strike!โ
The stonecutter smiled and replied, โNo, my friend, it wasnโt just that one strike. It was the 100 strikes before it, each one as important as the last.โ

One day, he stood before an enormous rock and began striking it. With each blow of his hammer, nothing seemed to happen. People passing by laughed at him, saying, โWhy waste your energy? That rock wonโt crack.โ
But the stonecutter ignored them. He kept striking the rock, blow after blowโ10, 50, 100 times. Still, there was no visible change. Yet, he didnโt stop.
Finally, on the 101st blow, the rock split into two perfect halves. A passerby who witnessed this was astonished and said, โYouโre incredible! You broke the rock in a single strike!โ
The stonecutter smiled and replied, โNo, my friend, it wasnโt just that one strike. It was the 100 strikes before it, each one as important as the last.โ
Lesson:
This story teaches us the power of persistence and consistency. Success doesnโt always show immediate results. Like the stonecutter, you might not see progress right away, but every effort you make brings you closer to your goal.
When you feel like giving up, remember: the breakthrough might be just one more effort away.

Capt R Harshan was born on 15 April 1980 at Manacaud in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala to K Radhakrishnan Nair and Chitrambika. He completed his schooling at Sainik School Kazhakootam. A multi-faceted student, he was equally adept at studies, sports, and extracurricular activities. While he played all sports, he captained the schoolโs Volleyball & Basketball teams. He is especially remembered by schoolmates for his notable performance as โBrutusโ in the play Julius Caesar, during the Annual Day function. He was a born leader and chosen as the School Captain in his final year, also earning the โBest All Round Cadetโ award that year. A voracious reader and a good orator, he devoured books on war and dreamt of being a paratrooper.
After training at NDA & IMA, he achieved his dream of becoming a paratrooper when, he was commissioned into the elite โRed Devilsโ, the 2nd battalion of the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army. He proved his mettle by performing very well during probation and subsequently was nominated for special weapons training in Israel.
Baramulla Operation: 20th Mar 2007
Capt R Harshan was posted to Kashmir in 2006 and his unit was operating in the terrorist-infested area of Baramulla in J & K. On 7th March 2007 while leading his team during a patrol, he observed some suspicious movement. He immediately ordered his troops to take up positions to deal with any eventuality. He soon spotted one terrorist and in a courageous move crawled in the underbrush skillfully and shot him. The other terrorist fired at Capt Harshan, but he unmindful of his safety charged at him and shot him down, killing both single-handedly.
On 19 Mar 2007, Capt Harshanโs unit received information from intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in a village in the Baramulla district. It was decided to launch an operation in night to flush out the terrorists. In the early morning of 20th March, Captain Harshan along with his troops cordoned off the area surrounding the suspected house. At about 3:50 AM, four terrorists holed up inside the house, and tried to break free from the cordon by rushing out and firing indiscriminately. Captain Harshan in a swift and daring move shot dead the leader of the terrorist group, but in the exchange of fire, he received a bullet on his thigh. In total disregard to his injury, he battled on and killed one more terrorist. This time, however, he was shot in the neck and despite that, he lobbed a grenade and injured the third terrorist. However, Captain Harshan later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred, before he could see his team kill the remaining two terrorists. Captain Harshan led from the front like a true military leader and laid down his life in the service of the nation.
Captain Harshan was given the nationโs highest peacetime gallantry award โAshok Chakraโ for his exceptional courage, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice. He became the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious gallantry award in Indian military history.

Major Satish Dahiya Sir's Full Story ๐
Major Satish Dahiya was born on 22 Sep 1985 and hailed from Banihari village in Mahendragarh district of Haryana. The only child of Shri Achal Singh Dahiya and Smt Anita Devi, Maj Dahiya completed his schooling from Uttar Pradesh and pursued higher studies from Rajasthan University. Thereafter he joined the army and was commissioned on 12 Dec 2009 into the Army Service Corps, the logistic supply arm of Indian Army. After completing his training, he got posted to 1 Naga battalion deployed in J&K, as his first assignment. The unit was deployed at Nowgam in J&K and was engaged in counter insurgency operations. He soon honed his field craft skills and became Ghatak Platoon commander of the unit.
In the year 2012, he got married to Ms Sujata from Pawera village in Mahendragarh district and the couple had a daughter Priyasha on 15 April 2015. After serving with his Corps unit, 539 ASC battalion for a couple of years, Maj Dahiya was deputed to serve with 30 RR battalion deployed in J & K area for counterinsurgency operations. While serving with 30 Rashtriya Rifles unit, Maj Dahiya participated in many counterinsurgency operations. He was a soldier at heart and an officer par excellence, who believed in leading from the front in an operation like a true military leader.
Handwara Operation(J&K): 14 Feb 2017
During Feb 2017, Maj Satish Dahiya was serving with 30 RR battalion deployed in Kupwara district of J&K. The battalion under the command of Col Rajiv Saharan was engaged in counter-insurgency operations on a regular basis. On 14 Feb 2017, information was received from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in Hajin Kralgund village in Handwara town of Kupwara district. After analyzing the specific inputs it was decided by the security forces to launch a joint operation of J & K police and armyโs 30 RR unit to nab the terrorists. The joint team swung into action and the operation started around 5 PM in the evening of Feb 14, 2017. As per the intelligence inputs, the militants were holed up in a residential building and the joint team threw a cordon around the suspected area.
The joint team comprised two cordon parties with the outer cordon being led by the CO himself, which was meant to prevent escapes and provide back up to the inner cordon when needed. The inner cordon had two teams; one being led by Maj Satish Dahiya and the other by one JCO. As Maj Satish Dahiya and his troops reached the suspected house, the terrorists opened fire at them from their hideout. Maj Satish Dahiya leading the operation, tactically moved his troops to close all escape routes for the militants. The militants in sheer desperation resorted to indiscriminate and heavy firing against the troops. Maj Dahiya then sneaked into the compound of the residential building along with his buddy, taking cover of the small mound of earth available there.
In the ensuing gun fight, Maj Dahiya received a gun shot and got wounded. Undeterred Maj Dahiya continued to engage the terrorists without caring for his injuries. In the meantime, the terrorists lobbed grenades at the troops which injured three of three of his comrades. Maj Dahiya asked for reinforcement for their evacuation but refused it for himself. Maj Dahiya continued to fight and managed to eliminate another terrorist. The third terrorist was subsequently killed by the outer cordon troops. By then, Maj Dahiya had suffered heavy loss of blood and needed immediate medical attention. He was evacuated for medical treatment to 92 Base Hospital but it was too late. He soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Maj Satish Dahiya was a gallant soldier and a gritty officer, who laid down his life in the service of the nation following the highest traditions of the Indian Army. Maj Satish Dahiya was given the gallantry award, โShaurya Chakraโ for his raw courage, leadership, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice.
