📡📡55th GST Council Meeting Key Highlights -

1. Luxury Items GST Hike -

#Wristwatches - Price above ₹25,000: GST proposed to increase from 18% to 28%.

#Shoes - Costing over ₹15,000 per pair: GST may rise to 28%.

Garments -

Below ₹1,500: GST to remain at 5%.

₹1,500 to ₹10,000: GST may increase to 18%.

Above ₹10,000: Proposed GST hike to 28%.

2. Food Delivery Platforms - GST rate for platforms like #Swiggy and #Zomato may reduce from 18% ( with ITC ) to 5% ( without ITC ).

Aim: Lower delivery charges and balance tax disparity between dining and ordering food.

3. Insurance Premium Exemptions -

Health insurance plans with ₹5 lakh coverage, term life insurance, and senior citizen-specific policies could get GST exemption.

Current GST rates - Health and life insurance premiums: 18%.

Endowment and annuity plans: Differential rates.

Goal: Make insurance more accessible for senior citizens and marginalized groups.

4. Aviation Turbine Fuel ( ATF ) Under GST - Proposal to bring ATF under GST regime.

Benefit: Airlines may claim input tax credit, reducing operational costs.

Challenge: Likely resistance from states due to revenue concerns.

5. Tax Changes for Other Items - 148 items, including compact vehicles and pre-owned electric vehicles, may move from 12% to 18% GST bracket.

Aim: Align with rate rationalisation efforts.

6. Sin Goods GST Rate Proposal -
Introduction of a 35% GST rate for sin goods under discussion.

Possible extension of the GST compensation cess regime to continue supporting states.

7. Four-Tier GST Structure -The structure will remain unchanged, but rationalisation across various sectors is underway.

Objective of Proposed Changes -

Rationalising tax rates for luxury goods and essential services.

Ensuring affordability and accessibility for consumers, especially marginalized groups.

Addressing disparities and simplifying tax structures.
