As usual, after attempting the paper, everyone is just so “excited” to share what they have seen. It’s not entirely bad to discuss, everyone gets to interact with others but it never lasts long, does it? Anyway, just acknowledge yourself that you guys did the best you could, and don’t forget the fact that you still have a lot more to go other than just English. Tomorrow’s History paper is the more important subject which determines whether you guys can get the certificate or not. Calm down yourself and get yourself prepared, all the best.

36 hours and ticking, that’s how fast time progresses. Here comes another paper for you guys to attempt.

Surely most of you guys should have watch movies, and one of the many steps to produce it is obviously to have a storyline, a plot. For the paper itself, you have to follow the instructions that were given, so one will need to have a creative mindset in order to produce a good story under this constraint. In simple context, think of how the story start of, followed by the main plot to the climax, then an ending, all under five minutes time, otherwise just choose something else to write. For those who are taking the exam at a later time, you can train yourself on this part by writing some form of diary, once a week or a month should do the job, and persist.

Tip of the day: When applying forms for verbs, always make sure to check the subject that it is pointing to [Either he or she (is); Everyone (is); Neither of them (is); 10 dollars (is)].

the difference between less common lexis words and bombastic words 𓊆 " . 🎀📓

1. Less Common Lexis
• Definition: Words that are less frequently used but are precise, clear, and add depth to communication.
• Purpose: To make writing or speech more refined, articulate, and formal without sounding overly complicated.
• Examples: Ephemeral, ubiquitous, ameliorate, disparity.
• Characteristics:
• Typically found in academic, professional, or intellectual contexts.
• Adds nuance and clarity to writing.
• Easily understood with some familiarity but not overly extravagant.

Example Sentence (Less Common Lexis):
“Her explanation was so lucid that even the most complex ideas became easy to understand.”

2. Bombastic Words
• Definition: Overly elaborate or pretentious words that aim to impress but may lack clarity or necessity.
• Purpose: Often used to sound intellectual or sophisticated, but can come across as excessive or unnecessarily complex.
• Examples: Utilization instead of use, quintessential instead of essential, multitudinous instead of many.
• Characteristics:
• Often seen as verbose or overly formal.
• Can confuse the reader if used without proper context.
• Sometimes used to “show off” vocabulary.

Example Sentence (Bombastic Words):
“Her verbose elucidation on the multifarious intricacies of quantum mechanics obfuscated the primary argument.”

When to Use Each
• Less Common Lexis: Use in formal writing, academic papers, or professional communication where precision is valued.
• Bombastic Words: Avoid unless writing for humor, satire, or to match a specific tone that requires extravagance.

Example Comparison
Less Common Lexis:
“The data revealed an anomaly that required further investigation.”

Bombastic Words:
“The empirical dataset exhibited a paradoxical incongruity necessitating supplementary analytical scrutiny.”

In short, less common lexis enhances writing, while bombastic words often detract from it. The former is precise and clear; the latter can be needlessly showy. ̥ ࣪ ᜔ ◠ᴗ◠ ࣭ ⃬ ࣪ ࣭

60 hours but it never pauses. For those who are so determined, here’s the second one, though it’s better to spare some time to revise other subjects at this point of time: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_7wKi7O9i93kRjlWsR2VHBFlHI-EJl9tefHpUgTD1zzWXsA/formResponse

So, I did not expect a surge of questions, but I will try to address all of them here. For essays, please check out the “Compilation of Essays” file. You will find various topics in different formats which should be sufficient to grasp how to answer your paper 1. The thing is, once you got the idea on what to write, then the rest shouldn’t really be an issue, so to be honest, it isn’t worth to put all your focus onto a few topics.

Regarding the “crime” topic, let’s say it’s an article and it wanted you to describe what is it, why does it happen, and how to prevent. Get a catchy title of your own, like “The rise of crimes,” underline it, then write the author’s name (which is you) under it. Next, think of a hook to catch readers’ attention: “Lately, there has been multiple reports of crime…” After that, a new paragraph to answer the first question: “Crime is a form of illegal act…” followed by the next one: “Humans sometimes get greedy…” and the last one: “We should keep our valuable items somewhere safe…” After all of these, conclude all of these in your last paragraph.

English tenses confuse the majority which we can feel on our own. Deciding whether to use present, past or future is already a mess, yet there’s more chaos when there’s continuous forms, perfect forms and both forms together. Here’s a question: “Where did he put his phone at?” This sentence itself indicates a guy has put his phone somewhere earlier, but does that mean it’s missing? It could be but we are uncertain about it, but regardless of that, it still refer to an action in the past. The same applies for “My friend had explained where the brake was and how to use it.” This sentence just wants to point out there’s a friend who told me where the brake was on the bike. These are hard to explain, which means you actually have to gain experience in order to grasp better why is it the case.

I hope these answer the questions of you guys. Anyway tip of the day: Subjects (I, You, We. They, He, She, It) are always at the front whereas possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs) are always at the back.

Good evening, hopefully everyone who have completed their Malay oral test did well, though let’s not go off topic over here. With this year’s SPM schedule released earlier in October, here’s the date for the English papers:
• Paper 3 (Speaking): 16~19 December 2024 (13 min)
• Paper 4 (Listening): 31 December 2024, 11:00 - 11:40
• Paper 1 (Reading): 6 January 2025, 8:15 - 9:45
• Paper 2 (Writing): 6 January 2025, 11:15 - 12:45

in case you don’t know, here’s a brief explanation on how the schedule of the speaking test works. Every day, there will be a total of 3 sessions conducted, each with a total of 8 duos, lasting for around 2 hours (8:00~10:30; 10:45~12:45; 14:15~16:15). As expected, candidates are required to arrive early by 10 minutes to take attendance and check their information, and do remember to always bring your IC with you during any SPM examinations. Only candidates in the first and second session are required to stay in the quarantine room until 14:00, whereas candidates in the last session is allowed to leave after they completed the test. You should be enlighten by your schools regarding the details later on if not.

That’s a lot of words at the beginning of the month, well, since SPM is approaching, if not around the corner, here’s another one month marathon of quizzes for you guys. Alongside that, since many people requested for tips & notes for the speaking paper, here’s what you can consider checking out on. For listening paper that is happening at the end of the month, well, something that you guys can do is watch some informative videos and shows so that you know how various words sound like, though don’t forget to learn at the same time while you are watching it.

Happy Deepavali to the Indians. Right, there are so many corrections and questions i have to answer you guys which result in a very long concluding post for this month, in fact it was too long to have everything in one post, though I hope you guys spend just three minutes reading it, and I bet you might learn something new. Let's hope I don't give up on providing quizzes here, which use a lot of brain power since I have to create and post them myself. Just telling so we can somehow have a little interaction probably, though I hardly expected a lot of it from this place. Regarding the interaction part, I am just a little disappointed when I couldn't make the situation better. Everyone is probably being very cautious (or purely no common topic to discuss with strangers) to avoid scammers that happen to appear out of nowhere, or just want to learn anonymously, just a speculation.

A channel hosted on a platform like this can at most, give you some guidance on how to perform well in certain parts of the papers. Whether you can answer the paper well, it's based on your experience and the knowledge that you have acquired throughout your lifetime. And from what I can perceive, most people over here prefer not to interact too much over here, which makes it slightly harder to actually "teach" effectively. From preschool to high school education, interaction has always been a crucial part of how one learns, as you can feel it for yourself. Not to say this place has zero interactions but it’s just not enough or sufficient in my opinion.

I have considered of posting writing and listening practices, but see, it can take a long time for you guys to answer and you have to be completely focused in order to answer questions like these, and I kind of bet most people won't even want to write long essays unless being forced or you really have the interests. I won't have the time to go through everyone's writing if there happened to be many submissions. The same can be said for reading, but you have to post the question and the quiz separately which is something I personally did not like, an inelegant experience.

Anyway, I hope you guys did genuinely learn something from the quizzes despite the quiet atmosphere in this community. For those who wanted to further hone their English skills even after you have completed the exam, consider joining t.me/BreezingEnglish, just a channel dedicated to educating some of the most common mistakes we usually made, and a few new vocabularies and idioms once in a while. If you made this far or read this by accident, today must be your lucky day, here’s a portal for the first ten people to learn together, Do take note this won’t be an ordinary place as you won’t learn anything without speaking anything, that’s all I will say. After all, life is full of questions and mysteries to be solved so for this one, hopefully you figure out the “riddle” and join at your own discretion.

By the way, if you are new here, consider reading this post of mine. This contains all my words on how to improve your language (and other subjects) effectively instead of just learning for the sake of exams, which I am not that kind of person. I am neither the best nor perfect, so take it with a grain of salt and do it at your own reflexes. If you want to master your use of English, please check out my July marathon quiz series, which focus mostly on grammar and vocabulary skills. Thank you for all of the support, hopefully I will be back one day again.

Another month concluded with phrasal verb & idiom quizzes. Hopefully this post answers everyone’s doubt for this month’s quiz. First of all, starting with some of the mistakes I could find for those who are curious and obsessed about it (this shows how hard it is to actually create quizzes, also feel free to find the mistakes in this and the next post):
1, The concert has been ___ to an unspecified date due to the devastating storm. [put back] (delayed, played, stopped, took)
2. Camping might not be the best place to live, but I bet you can ___ with it. [put up] (bear, connect, follow, stop playing)
3. I don’t mind if you want to ___ with me today since it’s already late midnight. [stay over] (lie on the field, live in different countries, rest on the bed, sleep somewhere else temporarily)
4. He decided to ___ at home and revise for his upcoming exams. [stay put] (live there, not to go anywhere, put that thing and stay there, rest on bed)
5. I have prepared a surprise for the class but someone ___. [gives me away] (gifts me something and throw away, gives that thing to me immediately, reveals my secret, sends me to someone)
6. Can you ___ while we use the washroom? [hang on] (hurt, stuck, wait, waste time)
7. It ___ to find a parking spot in the capital city. [takes ages] (takes a very long time, brings many old people, brings many old tools, takes only a few minutes)
8. Most of the chipsets found in today’s devices are ___ Taiwan. (made from, made in, made of, made with)

This is probably my negligence for not giving the instructions of answering this month’s quiz. Anyway please note that this is not meant to be a fill in the blank with the appropriate word or phrase quizzes, as some of them sounds odd when you do so. In fact, the sentence is there to help you understand the usage of the idioms and phrasal verbs, so you will need to use the idiom provided as the reference for answering the questions, here’s a few examples I want to point out:
*No choice, but since we were late, we have to bear with it even though it felt like a fish out of water/felt uncomfortable.
*He is doomed to be dead in the water/doomed to fail as he has not been putting effort into the project.
*His explanation for being late didn’t hold water/isn’t valid, as the traffic was good.
*I can see their bonds are starting to form again, seems like that incident is water under the bridge/resolved for them already.
*I can’t believe they are working as a group, (it’s like oil and water) as one of them is extrovert and another being an introvert.
*The school cherry-pick/pick the top students and register them to participate in a competition.

And regarding this controversy question: “You should ___ an umbrella with you, there's chances of raining today.” It’s obvious the answer can only be bring and take. When I was trying to create this question, by default I think of a situation which one is about to leave the house but someone suggested to “take” an umbrella, which leads to this answer. After looking back at it, there could be another interpretation which one is doing some outdoor activities but then the other suggested to “bring” the umbrella from the car so they can return to the car while it’s raining. This really depends on the context you are trying to bring out so in this situation, both answers are acceptable.
