When You and the Flu Are Best Friends

Every time the rainy season comes, you and the flu are like old friends. You know it's here even before you feel that first sneeze. The rain starts falling, and suddenly, you're cold, tired, and your throat feels like itโ€™s on fire. Itโ€™s like the flu always knows exactly when to show up, and no matter how hard you try, you canโ€™t get rid of it. Please, stay healthyโ€”don't let the flu become your friend.

You drink hot tea, you sleep for hours, but the flu never leaves. It wraps itself around you like a heavy blanket, making you feel weak and helpless. Every breath feels like it takes all your energy, and the rain outside only makes it worse. You want to feel better, but it feels like the flu is your only companion, and itโ€™s never going to leave. Make yourself warm, because the cold and the flu are not kind to anyone.

And even though you hate it, the flu stays with you. You lie there, counting the hours, hoping it will end soon, but it feels like the rain and the flu will never stop. You wish you could just escape, but instead, you waitโ€”waiting for that tiny moment when you finally feel like yourself again. Take care of yourself and donโ€™t let the flu take control.

How Do You Kill a Cockroach?

There it is. The little monster runs across the floor, ruining your peace. You freeze for a second, slipper in hand, wondering, โ€œWhy me?โ€ Itโ€™s not just a cockroach; itโ€™s a test of courage, patience, and how fast you can scream if it flies. You try to hit it, but it runsโ€”and then it sticks on the wall, swaying gracefully, as if mocking your every move.

You grab the Baygon and spray it like itโ€™s your last hope. Oddly, though, it doesnโ€™t die. It survives. It just sways a little, and there you are, standing with the can of Baygon, feeling defeated by this tiny creature that refuses to bow down.

And when you run, it feels like theyโ€™re chasing you on purpose. Itโ€™s as if their mission is to make you panic, fill you with fear, and break you down until you end up crying. Itโ€™s not just a bug; itโ€™s a psychological battle you didnโ€™t sign up for.

In the end, itโ€™s not about killing the cockroach. Itโ€™s about surviving the emotional damage it leaves behind. You cry a little, laugh at yourself, and hope the universe gives you a break. But donโ€™t be sad! Your house without cockroaches will come, and when it does, youโ€™ll feel like youโ€™ve won a big battle. So hang in there. One day, your house will be peaceful again.

Why Java Stays Crowded

Java's large population is no accident, it has a lot to do with Indonesia's history during Dutch colonization. When the Dutch ruled the country, they saw Java as the most important island because of its rich, fertile land, perfect for growing valuable crops like sugar, coffee, and tobacco. To work these plantations, the Dutch brought in many people, and Java quickly became the place to go if you wanted a job.

But it wasn't just the plantations that made Java so special, the Dutch also built roads, railways, and ports, which made it easy for people and goods to move around. Batavia (now Jakarta) became the business and political center of the Dutch East Indies, attracting more people in search of opportunities.

Even after Indonesia gained independence, Java remained a key part of the country's growth. The infrastructure and development left behind by the Dutch helped make the island a central hub for jobs, education, and city life. Today, Java continues to offer many opportunities, which is why so many people from different parts of Indonesia move there in search of a better future. With its busy cities and diverse culture, Java remains the most populated island, where people come to build a life and find new possibilities.

Exploring Sundanese Place Names in West Java

In Indonesia, especially in West Java, many place names start with the prefix "Ci", which comes from the Sundanese language. This prefix translates to water or river, symbolizing the Sundanese people's deep connection with nature. Water, being essential for agriculture and daily life, played a central role in shaping the identity and culture of the region. The naming of places with "Ci" reflects the importance of water sources and rivers in supporting the livelihoods of the local communities.

One well known example is Cirebon, a name formed from "Ci" (water) and "Rebon" (small shrimp). This reflects the area's history of shrimp farming and the production of shrimp paste, which made it an important trade center. Similarly, Cimahi, meaning "enough water," refers to a river that provided sufficient water for the local community, which was crucial, especially during the Dutch colonial era when the area became a military hub. Cibadak, combining "Ci" and "Badak" (rhinoceros), hints at the presence of rhinoceroses near water sources in the past.

These names are not just labels but stories of the Sundanese people's connection to their natural environment. The rivers and water sources they named reflect their reliance on these resources for survival and prosperity. This naming tradition also preserves the cultural and historical identity of the Sundanese, linking modern times to their rich heritage.

Maybe Right Now, Your Journey Isnโ€™t About Love...

All of this is normal. Maybe youโ€™re learning to be yourself right now, to create a better version of who you are. Learning to wake up every day and feel proud of what youโ€™re doingโ€”thatโ€™s what matters for now. Life has a way of unfolding in unexpected ways, and as much as weโ€™d like to see whatโ€™s ahead, trusting the timing is often the only choice.

Not everything has to happen at once. Sometimes, weโ€™re in a season of receiving love; other times, weโ€™re giving it away. Some days, weโ€™re surrounded by people, and other times, weโ€™re alone. Every season has its purpose. We donโ€™t get to skip chapters or fast-forward to the parts weโ€™re most excited for. Thatโ€™s the rule of life, and no one can change it. All we can do is learn to be grateful, find joy in what weโ€™re given, and cherish each moment, one by one. Isnโ€™t that the best part of life?

Perhaps right now, your journey isnโ€™t about romance or grand gestures. Maybe itโ€™s about finding comfort in your own company, learning what makes you feel alive, and discovering who you are when no one else is watching. Thereโ€™s a quiet power in that.

Itโ€™s tempting to compare our journeys, to feel like weโ€™re falling behind or missing out. But every path unfolds differently, and each season serves its purpose. Trust that the person youโ€™re becoming is exactly who you need to be, right here and now.

So, breathe deeply. Embrace the phase youโ€™re in. Learn, grow, and know that this is just one chapter of many yet to come. Someday, when you look back, youโ€™ll realize how essential this time was for everything that follows.

Maybe right now, your journey is about finding peace with where you are.

Embracing Polarity Within

โ€œWithin each of us are two competing sides, a polarity of character. Only one leads to greatness.โ€
-Lolly Daskal

This is the amazing and complex duality of human consciousness. The polarity exists on every level, in all themes, in our thinking processes and actions. Being the paradoxes we are, we love and hate, yearn for belonging yet choose separation in individualism. We feel it as the tension within us between rationality and passion, appetites and discipline, liberty and duty. Though they appear to be in contention, each of these forces is here to touch upon our humanity and help us evolve.

We possess the capacity to exhibit both generosity and greed, to assist and to cause harm, to empathize and to remain indifferent. All of these are influenced by the context, our experiences, and the choices we make. This duality does not make us good or evil; it makes us a rainbow casting light and dark shadows through open spaces.

Yet some people may view an emotion such as anger, or even fear as obstacles to personal growth and stress the need to overcome such negative feelings. On the contrary, accepting such emotions as the information for self-reflection can enhance growth, as opposed to inhibiting it, fostering a better fit with oneโ€™s "true nature".

What you might want to consider is that our polarity within is not something we need to overcome but something we can come to understand and accept. Through total surrender to both sides of our nature, we can strive towards wholeness. In doing so, we can right the powers that arise from either side.

We know that we transcend the dark by accepting it. We bring forth light only when we have the power of acceptance. Knowing our limitations provides us with the courage to go beyond them.

When the Rain Won't Stop

The rain has been falling non-stop, as if the heavens themselves are crying, pouring all their sadness onto the earth. The sky is a dull grey, covering everything in a blanket of sorrow. The streets are flooded, and the sound of the raindrops hitting the ground is like a sad melody that never ends. It feels like the world is holding its breath, waiting for the storm to pass.

On days like this, itโ€™s hard not to feel a little down. The cold air wraps around you like a tight hug, making it harder to escape the tiredness that comes with the grey sky. But even as the rain keeps falling, we must remind ourselves to stay warm and healthy. The dampness can drain your energy, so make sure to rest, drink something warm, and take care of your body. And pleaseโ€”donโ€™t even think about watching a movie or series with a sad ending on days like this! The last thing you need is more sadness in the air.

These rainy days feel endless, as if the world will never see the sun again. Yet, in the quiet sadness of it all, there is a kind of beauty. Sometimes, itโ€™s okay to feel a little lost in the rain, to pause and reflect. Itโ€™s a time to care for ourselves and others, to take a step back from the chaos and embrace the stillness, no matter how lonely it may feel.

So, to all of you out thereโ€”stay healthy, stay safe. The rain will eventually stop, and the sun will shine once more. Until then, hold on to hope, take shelter, and remember: even the darkest storms will end.

The Benefits Of Books On Your Brain

Reading daily can change the structure of your brain.

Do you like reading?
If so, youโ€™re likely doing something great for your brain

From novels to non-fiction, reading changes how our brain functions and can even alter its chemistry. Reading daily is known to increase intelligence, improve mental health, and, according to research, may even help us live longer. But in todayโ€™s screen-obsessed world, the benefits of reading are often overlooked.

Brain Benefits
Sabrina Romanoff, a clinical psychologist in New York, explains that reading can create new neurons through neurogenesis and improve connections between existing ones. When we read, it strengthens white matter in areas of the brain like the parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and corpus callosum, associated with: language, comprehension, learning, memory, and recall.

As the English writer Joseph Addison put it, โ€œReading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.โ€

And the most fascinating part? Different types of reading material activate different areas of the brain, giving it a varied workout. For instance, novels may enhance empathy and understanding, while nonfiction can boost analytical skills.

Mental Health Benefits
Research has also found that reading can reduce both physical and emotional signs of stress. In a 2009 study, students who read neutral news articles for half an hour had reduced stress levels compared to those who watched humorous videos or practiced yoga. Physical stress markers like blood pressure and heart rate also decreased.

But donโ€™t worryโ€”if the news stresses you out, reading novels, biographies, or other light material can offer similar stress-relieving benefits.

Knowledge and Cognitive Development
While platforms like YouTube can be great learning tools, they donโ€™t always offer the depth that books provide. Reading allows for a more thorough exploration of topics, helping us develop vocabulary, enhance comprehension skills, and learn new things from the infinite knowledge written by many of the most intelligent authors of history.

As Dr. Seuss famously put it: โ€œThe more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places youโ€™ll go.โ€

How to Make Reading a Habit
Todayโ€™s generation is very reluctant to read books, and may find it boring. This trend is fueled not only by the rise of social media but also by societal stereotypes that label avid readers as โ€˜nerds.โ€™ Itโ€™s normal because reading requires more brain power than scrolling on social media or binge-watching a full series on Netflix.

To start:
โœ”๏ธPick a book that genuinely interests you. (Physical books are great because they engage more senses, helping the brain retain information better)
โœ”๏ธSet a manageable daily goal, like reading one page a day.
โœ”๏ธChoose a specific time each day to read, whether itโ€™s after breakfast or before bed.
โœ”๏ธGradually increase your daily reading as it becomes part of your routine.

Reading isnโ€™t just a pastimeโ€”itโ€™s a workout for the mind and a gateway to lifelong learning.

When You Are Sick but Must Keep Working

what a terrible day you have! You wake up feeling like a shadow of yourself. Your body aches, your head spins, and all you want is to stay in bed. But here you are, forced to get up and go to work, feeling like a heavy weight is on your shoulders! Itโ€™s as if the universe has conspired to make your day as difficult as possible, and you canโ€™t help but feel a bit sorry for yourself.

Walking into the office, everything seems too loud and bright. The chatter of your coworkers feels like a thunderstorm, and the bright lights above seem to intensify your headache. Your desk is covered in tasks that look like a mountain to climb, and each one feels impossible with your foggy mind. You canโ€™t help but wish to be at home, cozy under your blankets instead of battling through the day. Each email and phone call adds to your burden, making you long for the comfort of your bed even more.

Itโ€™s okay to feel sad about this! Youโ€™re not a robot; youโ€™re human. The struggle is real, and acknowledging it is important. Take short breaks when you can, sip some warm tea, apply freshcare on your head; it might help ease your discomfort, and breathe deeply. Allow yourself to feel the struggle, and know that this tough day will pass.

Soon, youโ€™ll heal and be back to your usual self, ready to take on the world again. Remember that tough days happen to everyone, and it's just a part of life. When you finally feel better, youโ€™ll appreciate those good days even more. Until then, be kind to yourself and take it one moment at a time!

Our Pandemic History

What is Securitization? Securitization is the process of treating a problem as a major threat that needs quick and strong actions to protect people. Governments and leaders often use this approach during crises to show the importance of urgent action to keep everyone safe. By calling a situation a security threat, authorities can put in strict rules and gather resources quickly to deal with the problem.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments and health leaders used securitization to show that the virus was a serious danger to public health. This led to actions like lockdowns, travel restrictions, and mandatory mask-wearing to slow the spread of the virus. The main message was about the urgency of the situation, creating a feeling of shared responsibility among people to follow the rules and protect each other from this invisible threat.

As more people got vaccinated and COVID-19 cases went down, the focus slowly shifted towards desecuritization. This meant lifting restrictions little by little and returning to normal life, as the virus was seen as less of a big danger. Public health measures became regular practices instead of emergency actions. This change helped society adjust to living with the virus, allowing social and economic activities to start again.

Stay Connected and Stay Healthy

Social media is a big part of our everyday lives. It helps us stay in touch with friends, share fun moments, and keep up with whatโ€™s happening around us. However, spending too much time on social media can sometimes be bad for our mental health. Many people find themselves checking their phones all the time and scrolling through their feeds. This behavior makes our brains release dopamine, which gives us a quick feeling of happiness. But constantly seeking likes and comments can lead to anxiety and stress.

To tackle this issue, some people are trying a fun approach called dopamine detox. This means taking breaks from things that give us quick happiness, like scrolling through social media, watching videos, or playing games. Instead, we can enjoy calmer activities, like reading a good book, meditating, or going for a walk in nature. These breaks help us reset our brains and feel less overwhelmed, allowing us to focus on what really matters.

By using dopamine detox, we can build a healthier relationship with social media. Taking these breaks helps us enjoy real-life experiences and connect better with our friends and family. It encourages us to engage in meaningful conversations and can make us feel happier overall. Finding a good balance in our social media use means we can enjoy all the benefits without letting it take over our lives. Letโ€™s make time for both online fun and real-life connections!
