Stable soil:

This refers to soil that remains firm and solid under normal conditions. It does not shift, swell, or shrink significantly when exposed to moisture, and can support structures effectively. Examples might include compacted sandy or gravelly soils.
Ordinary unstable soil:

This type of soil has a tendency to shift or settle over time, especially under load or moisture changes. While it may not be highly problematic, it requires some form of reinforcement or stabilization when used for construction or engineering projects.
Shrinkable soil and vicious black cotton soil:

Shrinkable soil refers to soil that expands when wet and shrinks when dry. These volumetric changes can cause damage to structures built on them.
Black cotton soil is a specific type of clayey soil found in certain regions. It is known for its high shrink-swell capacity, meaning it can cause significant movement in foundations and structures, leading to issues like cracking.

Elastic Fastenings. These are the special types of fastenings used for holding rails to the sleepers firmly at a constant pressure without affecting the track structure for sufficient time. These fastenings are suitable for high speed tracks as they can withstand high frequency vibrations and shocks.
