My friendโ€™s mum succumbed to the EOL drugs last night at around 9:30pm. She found out via a garbled voicemail.

My friend arrived at the hospital at around 11pm. Sheโ€™s given me permission to share what happened nextโ€ฆ

Her mum was in a side-room, dead for around an hour and a half, eyes and mouth wide open. The syringe driver was still in place.

My friend closed her mumโ€™s eyes but couldnโ€™t close her mumโ€™s mouth. She went to find a nurse and asked why her mum had been left like that. The nurse argued that theyโ€™d tried to close her eyes and mouth but couldnโ€™t. The nurse was annoyed that my friend - whoโ€™s a journalist - was asking questions.

Back at her mumโ€™s bedside, she sat quietly. Suddenly, three masked security men with body cams appeared in the doorway. She asked them to close the door as she needed some time alone with her deceased mother. They refused and said the door had to stay open. My friend insisted they close it. They refused again. She explained how she needed privacy and asked them to leave.

Thatโ€™s when they lunged towards her, grabbed her and dragged her from the room. She managed to take a few photos before they snatched the phone from her. They tried to delete the pictures but couldnโ€™t. She demanded they give her phone back. They did, then threw her out of the hospital. She said they were total thugs.

Sheโ€™s called the police: theyโ€™ve said they canโ€™t help. Sheโ€™s determined to get her story published. For now though, sheโ€™ll be organising a funeral.

A friendโ€™s mum is being euthanised right now. She had a stroke, was taken to hospital and instantly put on an end of life pathway and administered EOL drugs midazolam and morphine via a syringe driver.
