🇧🇪 - For the first time ever, the ex-Maoist far-left Belgian Workers' Party (PTB-PVDA) will be part of the government in a Brussels municipality, after reaching a coalition agreement with the Socialist Party (PS) and Ecolo in Forest, as was stated by Bruzz.

A month after the local elections on October 13, Forest has formed a new municipal council. PS leader Charles Spapens will become the mayor, leading a coalition of PS, PTB-PVDA, and Ecolo. This coalition holds 25 out of the 37 seats on the municipal council.

The agreement was officially confirmed by Spapens at a PS meeting on Tuesday, the 12th of November. In a joint statement, the leaders of the three parties Spapens (PS), Séverine de Laveleye (Ecolo), and Simon de Beer (PTB) said they would work together to tackle key issues in Forest, including security, social and ecological justice, social cohesion, housing, youth empowerment, and economic development and job creation.

De Laveleye had previously called the PTB "a party like no other," commenting on the slow pace of coalition talks last month. Despite earlier opposition to a partnership with PTB, PS reversed its stance last week and began negotiations with the party in Forest, Schaerbeek, and Molenbeek.

In Forest, the center-right parties Mouvement Réformateur (MR) and DéFI came first in the elections with 10 seats. However, more than two-thirds of voters in Forest supported left-wing parties, with PS winning 9 seats and PTB and Ecolo each securing 8 seats. The centrist party Les Engagés won 2 seats.

PTB's rise to power in Forest follows a similar outcome in Mons, Wallonia, where the radical left party also formed a coalition with PS and Ecolo last Friday.

The agreement in Mons faced criticism from MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez, who called it a "coalition of shame." Bouchez, a native of Mons, had led a strong campaign against the left-wing parties, which PS mayor Nicolas Martin described as "extremely aggressive and insulting."
