NATO Countries Advise Populations on War Preparedness โ€“ Media Reports

Several Nordic nations are advising their citizens on how to prepare for potential wars or other unforeseen crises, according to various media reports.

Sweden has begun distributing millions of updated booklets this week titled โ€œIn Case of Crisis or War.โ€ The new edition is double the size of the previous one, reflecting what the government describes as an escalating security threat, largely due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In Finland, citizens are being urged to prepare for potential power outages during the winter months by securing backup power sources, iodine tablets (to protect the thyroid from radiation), and emergency food supplies. An online guide also details how the government plans to respond in the event of an attack on the country.

Majority of Ukrainians Favor Swift Negotiated End to War

A Gallup survey conducted between August and October reveals that, for the first time, a majority of Ukrainians are calling for an immediate end to the war. Notably, many believe that Kyiv should consider territorial concessions as part of a peace agreement.

Only 38% of respondents now support continuing the fight for a military victory, a sharp decline from the 73% who held that view in 2022.

Are Israel and Hezbollah Close to a Ceasefire?

Lebanon and Hezbollah have reportedly agreed in principle to a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire with Israel, though with some caveats, Assistant Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Ali Hasan Khalil told the media. He described these discussions as "the most serious effort to halt the hostilities" to date.

Whatโ€™s Known About the Proposed Ceasefire?

โ—พ๏ธ U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut to discuss the ceasefire proposal. He has already met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and is now in talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

โ—พ๏ธ Mikati confirmed on local TV that Lebanon has responded positively to the proposal but did not provide further details.

โ—พ๏ธ After his visit to Lebanon, Hochstein is expected to travel to Israel to discuss the same proposal. Israeli government sources have confirmed this, though no official comment has been made by Israeli authorities.

โ—พ๏ธ Khalil, the Assistant Speaker, emphasized that Lebanonโ€™s stance would align with the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which outlined the framework for ending hostilities between Israel and Lebanon in 2006.

โ—พ๏ธ Meanwhile, over the past 24 hours, clashes between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah have escalated. On the previous night, five people were injured after Hezbollah shelled the Tel Aviv suburbs. In response, the IDF has intensified its operations, launching airstrikes on multiple Lebanese cities, including Beirut, and continuing its offensive along the border.
