Answer:- Asoka, also known as Ashoka the Great, was an Indian emperor who ruled from 268 to 232 BCE. He was a member of the Maurya dynasty, which ruled over a large part of the Indian subcontinent during the 3rd century BCE. Asoka was the third emperor of the Maurya dynasty, following his grandfather Chandragupta Maurya and his father Bindusara.
Asoka's early reign was marked by military conquests and expansion of the Mauryan Empire. He waged wars against several neighboring kingdoms and annexed large territories, including parts of present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. However, his conquests were also marked by brutal violence, and he later regretted the bloodshed that had been caused in his name.
Following a particularly gruesome battle in 261 BCE, known as the Kalinga War, Asoka experienced a profound spiritual awakening and became a follower of Buddhism. He renounced violence and adopted policies of nonviolence, compassion, and social welfare. He implemented policies aimed at improving the lives of his subjects, such as building hospitals, planting trees, and constructing wells and rest houses along major trade routes.
Asoka also became a patron of Buddhism and supported the spread of the religion throughout his empire and beyond. He sent Buddhist missionaries to Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other parts of Asia, and his efforts played a significant role in the spread of Buddhism beyond India.
