Consumer Electronics - Big Shortage of air conditioners and refrigerators by mid-2025
Mandatory for manufacturers of ACs, refrigerators, and components to meet government standards and obtain the ISI mark.
The BIS decision aims to promote local manufacturing and prevent Chinese imports from flooding the Indian market.
Critical components include sheet metals, copper tubes, compressors, advanced electronics, and motors.
Approximately 85% of AC compressors and 70-75% of refrigerator components are still imported.
Local production is unable to fully replace imported components due to limited capacity and higher costs.
A leading multinational manufacturer is reportedly transferring component production to India from other subsidiaries.

I Love India. I buy during bear markets here, just like I did for five years after 2008 or in 2019/20, when mutual funds were facing redemption pressure.
And I take profits when bull markets get overheated—just as I did in 2017-18, 2022, and 2024.
After March 2020, I loaded up on Indian equities while mutual funds were selling heavily. The returns I made in USD terms post-March 2020 were among the best across major markets.
Now, with Indian markets appearing overvalued and growth slowing down, I’m simply rebalancing my portfolio. I’m booking some profits here and reallocating to undervalued markets or safe U.S. Treasuries that offer 4-5% yields. Is that wrong?
And be rest assured, I’ll be back in India. But not at the high valuations that domestic investors like Mr. Nilesh Shah or Mr. Raamdeo Agarwal suggest. I’ll return when domestic mutual funds are once again under redemption pressure.
