Quick notes related to hypothalamus:

📌Most ventral part of diencephalon.

📌Lies beneath the thalamus and ventromedial to the subthalamus.

📌Forms the floor and lower part of the
lateral wall of the 3rd ventricle .

⏩Most of the hypothalamus is hidden except the inferior surface, that can be seen on the inf surface of the brain, cranial to the cerebral peduncles.
𒆜Parts of the hypothalamus seen on the base of the brain:
1⃣infundibulum.
2⃣Tuber cinerium.
3⃣Mammillary bodies.

🎗The anterior column of the fornix passes vertically through
the substance of hypothalamus (to terminate in the
mamillary body) and divides it into medial and lateral parts .

🎗Lateral part🎗

🎗Lies medial and ventral to the subthalamus.

🎗Traversed by many fibers including medial forebrain bundle.

🎗feeding centre:
Controls food and water intake.

🎗Lesions cause aphagia and adipsia .

🎗Medial part🎗
🎗Forms lateral wall of the 3rd ventricle.
🎗Nuclei of medial part:
🔶Anterior nucleus.

🔶Supraoptic(Suprachiasmatic) nucleus
✨Suprachiasmatic nucleus:
concerned with the control of diurnal rhythm
and sleep/wakefulness cycle

✨Receives some afferent fibers directly from the retina.
🔶Paraventricular nucleus
⏩The axons of cells in supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei pass to the neurohypophysis in the hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract.

🔶Preoptic nucleus
🔶Dorsomedial nucleus
🔶Ventromedial nucleus
✨acts as satiety centre
Lesions cause: polyphagia, polydipsia.
🔶Posterior nucleus
🔶Mammillary nuclei
✨Part of the limbic system
✨Receive afferents:
from the hippocampus through fornix.
✨Send efferents to:
🌻Anterior nucleus of thalamus through mammillo-thalamic tract.
🌻Brainstem through the mamillotegmental tract.
🔶Infundibular nucleus.

📌Functions:
💡Co-ordination of homeostatic mechanism.
💡Controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
💡Center for regulation of autonomic activity --- controls medulla oblongata nuclei for cardiovascular, respiratoty functions

✨Activation of posterior region associated with sympathetic responses
✨Activation of anterior region associated with parasympathetic responses.

💡The mammillary nuclei are associated with the emotional behaviour and memory.
💡The suprachiasmatic nucleus is concerned with diurnal rhythm & sleep/wakefulness cycle.
💡The lateral hypothalamus & the ventromedial nucleus regulate feeding and drinking.
💡Center for Feeding reflexes—licking, swallowing, etc.
💡Controls subconscious skeletal muscle movements—facial expressions, sexual movements.
💡Coordinates autonomic response to conscious input—thought of fear produces accelerated heart rate, etc.

"Endocrinal embryology notes"

🌸. Pituitary Gland:
   - Anterior Pituitary: Derived from Rathke’s pouch (ectoderm).
   - Posterior Pituitary: Formed from the neuroectoderm of the diencephalon.
   - Timing: Begins development around the 3rd week and is functional by the end of the first trimester.

🌸. Thyroid Gland:
   - Originates from the endoderm, specifically from the thyroid diverticulum that descends from the tongue.
   - Timing: Starts forming in the 3rd week and becomes functional by the 10th week.

🌸. Parathyroid Glands:
   - Origins: Develop from the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches (endoderm).
   - Timing: Begins developing around the 5th week, functional by the 6th-7th week.

🌸. Adrenal Glands:
   - Cortex: Derived from mesoderm.
   - Medulla: Originates from neural crest cells (ectoderm).
   - Timing: Cortex development starts at the 6th week, and the medulla by the 7th week, with functionality developing later in gestation.

🌸. Pancreas:
   - Forms from dorsal and ventral pancreatic buds (endoderm).
   - Timing: Development begins at the 4th week, with insulin production starting around the 10th week.

🌸. Gonads:
   - Origins: From genital ridges (mesoderm).
   - Timing: Development starts at the 5th week, with differentiation by the 7th week.

🌸. Pineal Gland:
   - Derived from the neuroectoderm of the diencephalon.
   - Timing: Development starts around the 7th week and continues into fetal life.

🔷 Hypothalamus🔷:

🔹 def:
_ is a part of the diencephalon which lies below (anteroinferior) of thalamus, in front of subthalamus.
_ forms the floor and the lower parts of lateral walls of the 3rd ventricle.
_ extend from lamina terminalis Anteriorly to mammillary bodies posteriorly
🔹Size:
4 g and forming only 0.3% of the total brain mass.

🔹function:

▪️ Autonomic control:
The anterior part controls the parasympathetic nervous system while posterior part controls the sympathetic nervous system.
▪️Endocrine control: Regulates the hormonal secretion of the anterior pituitary by releasing factors or release inhibiting factors
▪️Neurosecretion: Secretes neurohormones: oxytocin and 
vasopressin.
▪️Regulation of food and water intake:
The lateral part of the hypothalamus acts as hunger centre and thirst centre while the medial part acts as satiety centre.

▪️ Emotional expression:
like laughing, crying, sweating, or blushing mediated by the integrated activity of the ANS and somatic efferent system.

▪️ Sexual behavior and reproduction:
by influencing the secretion of gonadotrophic hormones by the pituitary gland.

▪️ Temperature regulation:
By anterior portion of the 
hypothalamus prevents the rise in body temperature 
while posterior portion promotes heat conservation and heat production.

▪️Biological clock:
Regulates the cyclic activities of the body (circadian rhythm), viz. sleeping and waking cycle, 
but itself affected by diurnal rhythms.
The circadian rhythm for many body functions is about 24 hours.

🔹 Boundaries:

▪️Anteriorly: Lamina terminalis (lamina terminalis extends from  the optic chiasma to the anterior commissure).

▪️Posteriorly: Subthalamus.

▪️ Inferiorly: Structures in the floor of the 3rd ventricle, viz.
tuber cinereum, infundibulum and mammillary bodies.

▪️Superiorly:Thalamus.

▪️ Laterally: Internal capsule.

▪️Medially: Cavity of the 3rd ventricle.

🔹Subdivisions of the Hypothalamus:

1) Preoptic region—adjoining the lamina terminalis.
(Anatomically, it belongs to telencephalon but functionally it  belongs to hypothalamus).
2) Supraoptic region—above the optic chiasma.
3) Tuberal region—includes the tuber cinereum, infundibulum and area around it.
4) Mammillary region—includes the mammillary bodies 
and area around it.


🔹Hypothalamic Nuclei:

▪️Preoptic region:
• Preoptic nucleus.

▪️Supraoptic region:
• Supraoptic nucleus
• Anterior nucleus
• Paraventricular nucleus.

▪️Tuberal region:
• Arcuate (infundibular or tuberal) nucleus
• Ventromedial nucleus
• Dorsomedial nucleus.

▪️Mammillary region:
• Posterior nucleus
• Mammillary or lateral nuclei

🔹Connections of the Hypothalamus:

1) The axons of supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei run 
in the pituitary stalk to reach the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis) and form the hypothalamohypophyseal tract.
These axons transport the neurohormones—vasopressin and oxytocin—synthesized in supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus, respectively, to the posterior pituitary.

2) The axons of other cell groups, e.g., tuberal nuclei enter  the region of median eminence to deliver their neurosecretory material to the hypothalamohypophyseal 
portal system of blood vessels to control the secretion of hormones from the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis).

3) The long axons from thalamus pass through the 
brainstem and spinal cord to synapse with the preganglionic sympathetic cells in the lateral horns of the thoracic and upper two lumbar spinal segments and with the preganglionic parasympathetic cells in the 
lateral horns of the S2, S3, and S4 spinal segments to form hypothalamospinal tract.

4) Mammillothalamic tract connects the mammillary body to the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, which in turn projects to the cingulate gyrus.
