After over 48 hours of almost total nationwide power failure, two thermoelectric power stations were brought back online Saturday, with two more expected to be functional by Sunday.
The national power grid still only has 500 megawatts, compared to the usual 3 gigawatts. Officials have branded the current power crisis - driven by low fuel, poor maintenance of stations and high demand - the island’s worst in at least two years.
UPDATE: Cuba suffers third complete blackout in three days
After ministers had promised that a second power station would be brought back on line Sunday, the national power grid completely failed again late on Saturday.
The Havana Electric company confirmed the power grid failure on their Telegram channel at 10:25pm Saturday, before removing the post without an explanation later.
Cuban PM Manuel Marrero blamed the initial crash earlier this week on fuel shortages, which Havana has blamed on US sanctions.

After ministers had promised that a second power station would be brought back on line Sunday, the national power grid completely failed again late on Saturday.
The Havana Electric company confirmed the power grid failure on their Telegram channel at 10:25pm Saturday, before removing the post without an explanation later.
Cuban PM Manuel Marrero blamed the initial crash earlier this week on fuel shortages, which Havana has blamed on US sanctions.

Thousands of people demonstrated in Madrid on Sunday to demand the call for an early general election due to the "very serious deterioration of democracy" after the latest cases of "corruption surrounding the president's environment" and to call for his resignation: "Sanchez resign."
According to the Government Delegation, there have been 25,000 people the demonstrators who have gathered this Sunday in the Plaza Castilla in Madrid, and 400,000 according to the convener 'Platform for Constitutional Spain', which has brought together a hundred civil society associations, but PP and Vox have also joined.
