Laboratory for Integrity and Reliability of Advanced Materials (LIRAM) at UT Arlington MAE Department is looking for two fully funded Ph.D. students starting from Spring 2025 (preferable)/ Fall 2025. Job descriptions are:

Student 1 will work on multiphysics nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of composite materials. This research will be sponsored by my recently awarded DURIP grant from AFOSR on System to Characterize Damage Tolerance of Composites with Data-rich In-situ Nondestructive Inspection and Digital Twinning.

Student 2 will work on computational/experimental fracture mechanics for predicting and validating damage and failure in advanced materials, such as carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites, bio-inspired 3D printed materials, semiconductor materials, etc. Our recent work on bio-inspired composites submitted to AIAA SciTech 2025 has entered the semifinals of the student paper competition.

Applicants should have B.S. degrees in subjects such as Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Material Science. A graduate student with an M.S. degree is preferred. Research experiences in the following areas will be a great advantage: composite materials (manufacturing/testing/analysis), FEA simulation (using Abaqus/Ansys/LS-Dyna/COMSOL/in-house codes), scientific coding (numerical algorithms, mesh generation, data visualization, etc.)

The selected students will work on research projects related to electrified transportation and renewable energy systems including fault-tolerant power converters, multiphase drive systems, EV charging technologies, and advanced model-based control methods. 1) Should hold a master’s degree in electrical engineering (specialization in power electronics and electrical machines).
2) Experience in simulation of power electronic systems by using MATLAB/Simulink and PSIM simulation tools.
3) High proficiency in power electronics hardware including building and testing, Printed circuit board design and layout using Cad-soft Eagle/Altium Designer.
4) Programming C2000 microcontrollers or other real-time control platforms.
