One of the most dangerous mind-traps left over from our Church days is the temptation to site chapter and verse for everything. It would seem as if running to the Scriptures would be a wonderful thing, it can be just as bad as running away to manmade tradition.

The problem is that the Bible isn’t written to us. The Book was penned in different places and times by different people but all from Israel, whose culture is extremely foreign to ours.

Many details are not included in the Scriptures because they were already known and understood by all the people the Text was given too already.

And for many other matters Hebrew language just simply doesn’t translate well into our languages here in the west.

There’s always more to the story that we simply aren’t privy to which makes it dangerous for our western minds and imaginations to try to declare what is and what is not true based on what is or is not specifically written in the Book.

How can this get morally dangerous fast-like ?

In a great many areas there were extrapolated connections with out any mentions. For example, sexual relationships between males was expressly forbidden in writing… but not a word about all female sexual relationships? Does that make them morally approved in the Bible because they are not expressly forbidden?

How about an uncle and his niece in a sexual relationship? The Bible expressly forbids a man and his aunt from sexual relations but not a word about a man and his niece. Does that make it okay?

How about a sexual age limit? The Scripture never says specifically. But that doesn’t justify pederasty does it?

No. All these practices are condemned by scripture by being the paring with aspects which are mentioned.

We have to be very careful with our doctrines to make sure they are scriptural but also careful with knowing scripture is more than just the literal ink on the page. There is much more involved and we need take caution always to understand it as it was intended not merely as it was written. Not contrary to the writing either but contrary to how we might be tempted to read it in our western culture.

But why that name? No one knows for certain but the story that is said and seems to fit the historical narrative goes back to David in his early days, before he was king, when he was then but a shepherd.

As a shepherd he fought and killed lions and bears for his sheep. And then visiting his brothers at the frontlines of the war with the philistines he saw the entire army cowering before a giant. David, with a sling and a stone and the Mighty Name of YHWH knocked down said giant and cut off his head with his own sword. That part is all contained within the biblical narrative, but what happened after? It is said that David took the head of Goliath of Gath and set it up on a stake on a hill outside the city where he would one day reign as king. The head was left to rot until only the giant skull remained. And the name Golgotha developed from Goliath of Gath. Is that a true story? No one can say. But the symbolism is true no matter what.

When we see the skull symbol of Calvaria we remember the defeat of our enemies. We remember the Mighty One Who made it possible. We remember the Name of YHWH Which shall not be defied even by mighty giants. And we remember that YHWH Alone gives us the Victory.

Why would we take issue with the symbol of the Skull?

A Christian might have cause to complain, bearing an emblem that to them has only the simplest of meanings, that “‘Jesus’ died for their sins” on the “place of a skull” but without knowing what sins are, why that death took place there, how it had any merit on their behalf, and how much more was involved then and is supposed to be involved today with us.

Christianity has abandoned the Torah which defines good deeds, minimized the resurrection by declaring instantaneous transcendence to heaven above instead of the long sleep in the grave the Bible teaches, ignored the Name of YHWH in favor of an Anglo-Saxon “God” and all around diminished the Calvarian emblem to a symbol of death and little more.

But we who came to Calvaria not to find personal salvation like the Christians but instead to come to personally know our Savior, not to take from Him justification for our evils but to learn from Him true righteousness, we find the symbol of that moment, and indeed that monument, most appropriate of all for our embodiment. We didn’t come to Calvaria to acquire approval for all our wicked life. We came to Calvaria to die…and be given true Life from Him. We did not arrive to receive and leave. No. We came to build our home on that hill.

Where He died is where we live.

And how He lived is how we live.

Therefore Calvaria is a call to remember. Remember you are mortal. Remember there will be a resurrection. Remember their will be a judgment. Remember to do good deeds to prepare. Remember your Savior died for you. Remember to do good deeds to honor that offering. Remember that all your victories come by the mighty power of the Name of YHWH.

People are often put off by Calvarian symbolism, especially faithful Christians. But most prominently the symbol of the skull sends them into spasms.

But why should it surprise anyone that a people called Calvarian would proudly display a calvaria?

Yes, calvaria references a skull in Latin. But more particularly it alludes to The Skull. Golgotha. Usually translated as “the place of the skull” but it is more accurate to simply say the place of the ”the skull”.

Before Christianity adopted the cross as its central symbol and even prior to its utilization of the fish as an emblem, it first used the skull as a symbol, one which Calvarians were already using. Sometimes, a skull and crossed bones, sometimes a crowned skull and other times merely a plain skull.

The skull is the oldest Christian emblem and one which has been continually employed by Christianity till only a few hundred years ago. While the more orthodox have been steadfastly using it without stoppage, even they have not emphasized the skull emblem in many years, preferring to push happier narratives.

Calvarians have however never ceased to promote our symbolism nor failed to teach our symbology. So feel free to see this as your brief lesson on the Skull if you like.

While most of our emblems are multipurpose The Skull perhaps holds the most multifaceted
meaning. It all at once speaks of our own eminent death, the death of our savior, the place at which he died, the promise of resurrection, the demand of good deeds, and the recollection of ancient victories by the power of YHWH.

Firstly, the skull is Memento Mori a reminder we will die… and thereafter stand the judgment. In this capacity, calvaria calls us to be mindful not that one day we will die but Today. Maybe it will actually happen tomorrow or ten years from now or even further off but when ever it arrives it will then be called Today.

We get so busy and distracted, so caught up interchangeably between carelessness and cares. We waste time, money, energy and devotion on idle fancies and fancy idols, frivolously throwing away our time like there will be more on the back end. We forget the bill comes at the end. And that the end will almost always arrive unexpectedly. The skull symbol is a reminder we are mortal every moment and to make every moment count.

But it’s also a call to morality. One may easily say, “I am mortal therefore I will live it up, fast and loud and go out fat and happy.” But to think so would be missing the other half of the meaning. We don’t just die and become dirt. We will sleep and then wake to delight or dread in the End of all things. The calvaria is a call to remember day and night the coming judgment and to plan out own days and do deeds of righteousness in preparation for that day.

Therefore being emblematical of our impending doom and the judgement to come, it also stands to say that though we fall we will also, assuredly rise again. The skull is the promise of the resurrection. The skull is the eternal question. The question YHWH asked Ezekiel “Can these bones live?” To which the “prophet” replied “Sovereign YHWH, you know.” And then an example of their rising again and being restored once more.

And why can that resurrection happen? Because He Who Is the Resurrection and the Life gave His life for us upon Calvaria, that hill called, the skull. The skull reminds us we can never be good enough. We know we will die; we know we will rise again to stand the judgment, and thus we work wonders with an eye for the prize; but without the Sacrifice of Messiah upon Calvaria, all our honorable actions would be in vain and only our evil deeds would remain. Through Yeshua, we may be redeemed and all our wickedness paid for and removed.

That is what happened on that hill. But why was it called Calvaria anyway? The name calvaria was applied to it because it was already named Golgotha.
