Is the "PhD Only" Category in UGC NET Results Useful?

The recent addition of a "PhD only" category in UGC NET results by the NTA raises concerns about its relevance. Indian universities primarily prefer NET and JRF-qualified candidates for PhD admissions, making the "PhD only" category less valuable.

Even NET-qualified candidates face stiff competition for PhD seats due to limited availability, leaving PhD-only candidates at a further disadvantage.

Personally, I qualified the BHU RET (Banaras Hindu University Research Entrance Test) three times and was called for interviews twice but was not selected either time. My experience reflects the intense competition and the challenges that even qualified candidates face. Many others have faced similar struggles, highlighting how this new "PhD Only" category might not solve existing issues but instead complicate the admissions process further.

A sensible solution would be to remove the "PhD only" category and let universities conduct their own research entrance tests, as they were doing earlier, to ensure the best candidates are selected.
This category also reduces opportunities for NET and JRF-qualified candidates, wastes university time and resources, and disrupts the academic calendar for PhD programs.
