An earthquake swarm started in Ethiopia on 21 December and is still ongoing. Tremors (thus far 41) are mostly in the higher M 4 range, but peaked M 5.1 on the 29th. East Africa is not exempt from major earthquakes. South Sudan had two M 7 earthquakes in 1990.

There were not many atmospheric anomalies in the last two weeks, but of those the region near today's M 7.0 earthquake was marked 15 days earlier, on 20 November. Too long in my opinion and hardly actionable, but still.

The situation with Earth between Venus and Mars remains critical and the number of M 7+ earthquakes is still well below average. We're almost 2 years without a M 7.8+ and 3.5 years without M 8+. So we know some regions on the planet are probably near the tipping point of a big one. Please keep this in mind.

The earthquake was followed by M 4.3 in the state of Oregon a minute later.

Stress has been building for over 300 years along the Cascadia subduction zone. In January 1700 it ruptured with an estimated magnitude 9.0 earthquake. Studies revealed average recurrence interval of mega-thrust earthquakes (M 8.5+) is approximately 240 years. Longest interval is 500 years.
