FOMC members cited, according to the meeting summary, “the effects of potential changes in trade and immigration policy as well as strong consumer demand. Business contacts in a number of Districts had indicated that firms would attempt to pass on to consumers higher input costs arising from potential tariffs.“

They further noted “upside risks to the inflation outlook. In particular, participants cited the possible effects of potential changes in trade and immigration policy.“

Since the meeting, most central bank officials have spoken in cautious tones about where policy is headed from here. Most view the current level of rates in a position where they can take their time when evaluating how to proceed.

In addition to the general focus Fed officials put on employment and inflation, Trump’s plans for fiscal and trade policies have added a wrinkle into the considerations.

On the flip side of worries over tariffs and inflation, the minutes noted “substantial optimism about the economic outlook, stemming in part from an expectation of an easing in government regulations or changes in tax policies.“

SM News

19 Feb, 19:56

Members said that the current policy provides “time to assess the evolving outlook for economic activity, the labor market, and inflation, with the vast majority pointing to a still-restrictive policy stance. Participants indicated that, provided the economy remained near maximum employment, they would want to see further progress on inflation before making additional adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate.“

Officials noted concerns they had about the potential for policy changes to keep inflation above the Fed’s target.

The president already has instituted some tariffs but in recent days has threatened to expand them.

In remarks to reporters Tuesday, Trump said he is looking at 25% duties on autos, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors that would accelerate through the year. While he did not delve too far into specifics, the tariffs would take trade policy to another level and pose further threats to prices at a time when inflation has eased but is still above the Fed’s 2% goal.

FED OFFICIALS ARE WORRIED ABOUT TARIFFS’ IMPACT ON INFLATION AND SEE RATE CUTS ON HOLD, MINUTES SHOW

Federal Reserve officials in January agreed they would need to see inflation come down more before lowering interest rates further, and expressed concern about the impact President Donald Trump’s tariffs would have in making that happen, according to meeting minutes released Wednesday.

Policymakers on the Federal Open Market Committee unanimously decided at the meeting to hold their key policy rate steady after three consecutive cuts totaling a full percentage point in 2024.

In reaching the decision, members commented on the potential impacts from the new administration, including chatter about the tariffs as well as the impact from reduced regulations and taxes. The committee noted that current policy is “significantly less restrictive” than it had been prior to the rate cuts, giving members time to evaluate conditions before making any additional moves.

US FED FOMC MEETING MINUTES: CHECK DATE, TIME OF THE RELEASE AND WHAT TO EXPECT

Investors eagerly await the release of Fed meeting minutes on Wednesday to understand US Fed members’ understanding of economic conditions and interest rate stance. Global investors monitor the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decisions, as they significantly impact liquidity in stock, bond, and other financial markets.

The Federal Open Market Committee’s last monetary policy meeting was held on January 28-29, 2025 where the interest rates were kept unchanged at 4.25% to 4.5% percent.

Today, Wednesday, the minutes of the FOMC meeting held on January 28-29 will be released in 15 minutes

In the January 28-29 FOMC meeting, the Committee decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 percent. The Committee, at that time, noted that it would carefully evaluate incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks before making any adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate.

In the press conference post the announcement of the FOMC decision, Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that inflation has moved much closer to the 2 percent longer-run goal, though it remains somewhat elevated. In his testimony to the US Congress last week, Powell consistently emphasized that the central bank is not hurrying to lower interest rates.

U.S. AND UKRAINE COULD STILL SECURE MINERALS DEAL THAT IS ‘POSITIVE’ FOR BOTH SIDES, OFFICIALS SAY

U.S. President Donald Trump’s hopes of securing access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals hit a wall Saturday after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the bid on the grounds that it was too focused on U.S. interests.

Prospects of an economic pact in exchange for Washington’s support for the war-torn country have gained traction over recent days amid talk of a wider deal to end the war, but Zelenskyy said the offer tabled thus far did not provide any specific security guarantees for his country.

“I didn’t let the ministers sign a relevant agreement because in my view it is not ready to protect us, our interest,” Zelenskyy told The Associated Press on Saturday in Munich. The U.S. had proposed taking ownership of 50% of Ukraine’s critical minerals, Reuters reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Still, officials at Munich Security Conference have said there is scope to negotiate a deal that is palatable to both sides.

AMAZON UNDER SCRUTINY: ITALY OPENS PROBE INTO ALLEGED TAX EVASION!

In a surprise development, Italian authorities have announced that they have opened a formal investigation into e-commerce giant Amazon for alleged tax evasion of €1.2 billion. The announcement comes as the company is already facing other investigations into its business practices.

These investigations were first revealed last year, but details of the extent of the alleged tax evasion emerged on Friday.

The new probe reportedly targets Amazon’s online sales in Italy from 2019 to 2021. Prosecutors suspect the company facilitated the sale of goods from sellers outside the European Union without disclosing their identities, helping them avoid paying VAT.

FAILURE TO SECURE ‘JUST AND LASTING’ PEACE FOR UKRAINE WOULD ALSO WEAKEN U.S., EU WARNS

Failure to secure a “just and lasting peace” for Ukraine would weaken not only Europe but also the United States, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned Friday, as prospects of a Russia-Ukraine peace deal intensify.

Von der Leyen said that authoritarian states were closely watching the progress of U.S.-led negotiations to end the near-three-year conflict, and what concessions may be made to Russia in spite of its invasion of its neighbor.

“A failed Ukraine would weaken Europe but it would also weaken the United States,” Von der Leyen told the Munich Security Conference.

RUSSIA’S CENTRAL BANK KEEPS INTEREST RATES UNCHANGED

The Central Bank of Russia decided on Friday morning to keep the country’s key interest rates unchanged during its February meeting, keeping the key rate at 21%, for the second consecutive meeting.

In its monetary policy report, the Central Bank of Russia indicated that it expects annual inflation in Russia to slow to between 7% and 8% in 2025, before declining to the Central Bank’s target of 4% in 2026, and to stabilize at this level for a longer period.

The Central Bank of Russia stressed that the labor market remains strong, noting that unemployment remains at record lows, which forms the basis for the gradual return of the economy to balanced growth.

🔴US President Donald Trump has issued a blunt warning to the BRICS nations, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on all imports into the United States if they go ahead with launching a common currency. Speaking hours before a scheduled meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump mocked the economic bloc, saying: “BRICS is gone.” Trump did not hesitate to criticize the bloc, saying: “BRICS was created for a bad purpose… I told them if they wanted to play with the dollar, they would be hit with 100% tariffs

The day they said they wanted to do it, they’d come back and say – please, please. BRICS is gone since I said it…” His comments underscored his long-standing position that any attempt to undermine the US dollar’s dominance in global trade would face severe economic consequences.

BOJ GOVERNOR UEDA: I SEE US POLICIES WILL HAVE INFLATIONARY IMPACT

Speaking to parliament early Wednesday morning, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said the central bank will continue to implement monetary policy appropriately to achieve its 2% inflation target.

Ueda’s remarks today included the following:

💬The BOJ will monitor the impact of US tariffs and immigration policies on the economy.

💬We pay very close attention to the policies of the new US administration.

💬I see the impact of US tariffs and immigration policies as inflationary for the US economy.

💬The pace of monetary adjustment should depend on economic data.

💬The interest rate hikes implemented by the BOJ so far have been appropriate.

💬The BOJ is aware that rising inflation, including fresh food inflation, has a negative impact on households.

💬There may be risks that rising fresh food prices, which may not be temporary, will affect people’s sentiment.

US ENERGY REVEALS ITS EXPECTATIONS FOR OIL PRODUCTION AND THE MOST IMPORTANT INFLUENCING FACTORS.

The US Energy Information Administration stated in its report issued yesterday, Tuesday, that it does not expect the recent sanctions imposed on Russian oil to have a significant impact on crude oil production expectations.

In this regard, US Energy clarified its expectations for global liquid fuel production to increase by 1.9 million barrels per day during 2025 and by 1.6 million barrels in 2026.

The reason behind these expectations is the possibility of increasing crude oil production by countries outside the OPEC Plus alliance, along with the easing of OPEC Plus oil alliance restrictions on production restrictions.

Moreover, global oil inventories are likely to decline during the first quarter of the year, with crude prices continuing to trade around current levels, but in the second quarter and until next year, global oil inventories may rise against the backdrop of a gradual increase in production volume, which may coincide with weak growth in global demand for oil.

The US Energy Information Administration data, released a short while ago, showed that US natural gas inventories fell by 174 billion cubic meters during the week ending January 31, which was worse than expectations that natural gas inventories would fall by about 167 billion cubic meters. The previous week’s reading showed a decline of 321 billion cubic meters.

In terms of trading, immediately after the release of this data, natural gas futures contracts - for March delivery - reduced their early losses to record about $3.346 per million British thermal units, a decrease of only about 0.42%.

FEDERAL RESERVE VICE CHAIRMAN JEFFERSON: I PREFER TO KEEP INTEREST RATES STEADY AT CURRENT RATE

Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Philip Jefferson said during a speech on Thursday that he prefers to keep the Federal Reserve’s funds rate unchanged at its current level, explaining that he would like to wait longer to see the net impact of Trump’s economic policies and tariffs.

Jefferson’s most important statements today were as follows:

💬There is no reason to rush to cut interest rates at this time.

💬I prefer to keep interest rates at their current level for the time being.

💬The US Federal Reserve should wait to see the net impact of Trump’s tariff policies first.

💬It is important to consider the overall impact of the Trump administration on the Fed’s monetary policy objectives before moving forward with interest rate cuts.

💬The Fed’s ability to be patient with economic developments is in good shape.

💬The US Federal Reserve’s interest rate remains at a tight and constraining level for economic activity, despite its 100 basis point cut.

💬MPC members express a range of views on the economic outlook.

💬First view among the majority: Disinflation on track after considering the near-term inflation recovery, requires a gradual and careful approach.

💬Second view among the majority: Wages, inflation pressures and weak growth reflect supply constraints, and call for a gradual and cautious rate cut.

💬One member who voted for a larger rate cut sought an active signal on the adequacy of financial conditions in the UK, saying that prices still needed to remain restrained for some time.

💬The Bank of England’s one-year CPI forecast is at 3.0% (November forecast: 2.7%), based on market interest rates and style expectations.

💬The Bank of England’s two-year CPI forecast is at 2.3% (November forecast: 2.2%).

💬The Bank of England’s three-year CPI forecast is at 1.9% (November forecast: 1.8%).

European Central Bank Governing Council Member and Bank of Portugal Governor Mario Centeno noted that deflationary pressures in the European economy have become a concern for monetary policymakers, explaining that it may now be necessary for the ECB to cut interest rates below the neutral level in order to stimulate the economy enough to sustain inflation over the longer term.

Centeno’s key comments included the following:

💬The ECB’s reduction of inflation below 2% would pose a risk to eurozone economic growth if investment does not recover.

💬I see the ECB may need to cut interest rates below the neutral level to maintain inflation at 2%.

💬It is quite clear that the ECB needs to maintain a downward path for interest rates.

💬I agree with the gradual 25 basis point rate cuts in the upcoming meetings.

💬Europe must be united in the face of potential tariffs; I see the possibility of negotiations in the future.

BANK OF ENGLAND TO RESUME RATE CUTS WITH OUTLOOK COMPLICATED BY TAX HIKES AND TRUMP TARIFFS

The Bank of England is widely expected to cut interest rates on Thursday, amid a complex backdrop of a tepid domestic growth outlook, an upcoming hike in taxes paid by businesses and U.S. President Donald Trump’s market-rattling tariff threats.

As of Wednesday morning, Money markets were pricing in a 98% probability of a quarter-point rate cut at the February meeting, which would take the Bank rate to 4.5%. The BOE opted to hold at its previous gathering in December, citing “elevated” services inflation of 5% and a higher-than-expected headline print of 2.6% in November. That rate has since cooled to 2.5%, while services inflation dropped to a 33-month low of 4.4%.

MORGAN STANLEY SUDDENLY CHANGES ITS MIND ON US RATE CUTS THIS YEAR!

Morgan Stanley (MS) joined Barclays (BCS) and Macquarie in expecting the US Federal Reserve to make one 25 basis point rate cut this year, citing uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

Morgan Stanley had previously forecast two 25 basis point rate cuts in March and June.

In contrast, Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo still expect two rate cuts this year.

Trump’s tariff policies are expected to stoke inflation, which will add pressure on the US central bank, which is struggling to control persistent inflationary pressures.

“Tariffs being imposed at a faster pace than we previously assumed would likely mean that the rate of inflation decline would stall at a high level, blocking any immediate path to rate cuts,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note on Tuesday.

🟢The Bank of Canada is likely to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point on Wednesday as officials lay out their analysis of how US tariffs might derail a soft landing for the Canadian economy.

SM News

28 Jan, 19:03

➡️EXPECTED SCENARIOS: HOW WILL THE FED'S DECISIONS IMPACT THE MARKETS?
There are two main scenarios for the Fed's decisions in the coming period. The first scenario indicates keeping interest rates unchanged with indications of a future interest rate cut if inflation continues to decline. This scenario could lead to a weaker dollar and a rise in gold and digital currencies such as Bitcoin. The second scenario includes keeping interest rates stable for a longer period, which could support the US dollar and put pressure on gold and digital currency prices.

➡️MONETARY DECISIONS AND FINANCIAL MARKET TRENDS IN 2025
The US Federal Reserve's decisions in 2025 will be crucial for financial markets. As inflation continues to decline, monetary policy may move towards interest rate cuts in the coming months, which will affect the movements of the dollar, commodity markets, and digital currencies. Despite the economic challenges, the US Federal Reserve's direction in 2025 remains the focus of investors around the world.

SM News

28 Jan, 18:31

➡️GLOBAL OUTLOOK FOR FED DECISIONS IN 2025
According to a Reuters poll, many economists expect the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates steady at its next meeting in January 2025, with a possible cut starting in March. Reports from major banks such as TD Securities have shown that the Fed may keep interest rates at 4.50% in the first half of the year, while UBS expects that interest rate cuts will not occur before June 2025.

➡️POLICYMAKERS’ STATEMENTS AND FED DIRECTIONS
Policymakers’ statements within the US Federal Reserve are characterized by caution and gradualism in dealing with inflation. Christopher Waller, a member of the Federal Reserve, indicated that inflation in December was positive, but it needs to improve further. For his part, Thomas Barkin, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, added that inflation is heading towards the 2% target, which means that decisions to cut interest rates are likely in the coming months.

SM News

🟢THE FIRST DECISIONS OF THE US FEDERAL RESERVE IN 2025: WILL THEY BE SHOCKING TO PRESIDENT TRUMP?

Financial markets around the world are awaiting the decisions of the US Federal Reserve regarding interest rates, which will be pivotal in determining the direction of the US dollar and financial markets in 2025.

These decisions include setting the interest rate, the interest rate statement, as well as the press conference of the bank’s governor, Jerome Powell, details that have a strong impact on the movements of currencies, commodities, US stocks, and digital currencies, especially since they come after Trump took office and demanded a strong and rapid interest rate cut.

➡️HERE IS A LOOK AT THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DECISION-MAKING WITHIN THE BANK:

THE US ECONOMIC SITUATION: MIXED ECONOMIC DATA AFFECTS THE FEDERAL RESERVE’S DECISIONS
In recent months, several key economic data have been released about the US economy, most notably the inflation report. Inflation in the US consumer price index recorded 2.9% in December, in line with expectations. The US labor market also showed great strength as the economy added 266,000 new jobs in December, exceeding expectations. However, consumer spending data showed relatively weak, which could present challenges for the Fed in its upcoming interest rate decisions.

The benchmark Dutch TTF contract for European natural gas edged up 0.2% in early trade, settling at €46.36 per megawatt hour. The rise comes after prices fell from their peak earlier in January.

The price decline was also affected by the loss of some Russian gas volumes after the end of a transit agreement with Ukraine and a decline in gas inventories.

US FEDERAL RESERVE MEMBER COMMENTS ON RECENT INTEREST RATE CUT DECISION!

Alberto Musallam, a member of the US Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, stressed that the decision to cut interest rates last month was inevitable given the current economic conditions.

In statements published in the Wall Street Journal, Musallam indicated that the economic outlook has changed radically compared to what it was when the US Federal Reserve began taking interest rate cuts last year.

Musallam added that current challenges, including the stability of high inflation, indicate that rates may remain in the range of 2.5% to 3% for a longer period than initially expected.

The US Federal Reserve member also stressed that these changes in the economic landscape require the bank to make careful and balanced decisions, with the continued need to carefully monitor economic developments to ensure financial and monetary stability in the future.

MARKETS EAGERLY AWAIT EMPLOYMENT DATA, AMID FEARS OF AN IMPENDING RECESSION

The US jobs report for December is expected to reveal continued strength in the labor market, as employers added a large number of jobs while the unemployment rate remained stable, reflecting the labor market’s defiance of expectations of a significant slowdown.

Nonfarm payrolls are expected to have increased by 164,000 jobs in December. While this figure is lower than the 227,000 jobs gained in November, it supports the idea that the slowdown in the labor market is occurring gradually.

The monthly report, due out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, will highlight the Federal Reserve’s renewed focus on inflation, especially after it cut interest rates by a full percentage point last year to support labor market stability.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has indicated that monetary policymakers can wait before making further decisions on interest rate cuts as long as the labor market remains strong.

“The base case is for a pause in rate cuts in January, with the risk of an end to the easing cycle if the labor market slows to a crawl,” Bank of America economists Shruti Mishra and Aditya Bhave wrote in a note on Jan.

CRYPTOCURRENCIES ARE NOT REAL CURRENCIES

Daly stressed that cryptocurrencies should be treated as an independent asset class, and that confusing them with gold as is currently happening in the markets is not accurate. Despite the similarities in some aspects, Daly explained that she does not see cryptocurrencies as a real currency.

She explained that cryptocurrencies, in order to become a currency, must have the characteristic of growth with the expansion of the economy, and their value must not rise only due to increased demand for them. She cited the value of the dollar, the strength of which is linked to the performance of the US economy compared to other countries.

Daly’s comments contrast with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s earlier statement that Bitcoin is like gold, but digital. While he dismissed the possibility that the cryptocurrency could ever compete with the dollar, he suggested that it could be a competitor to gold as an asset. Daly also backed Powell’s view that cryptocurrencies are not yet ready to be full-fledged currencies, despite some cryptocurrency advocates asserting that they have reached that stage in their life cycle.

She said: We must deeply understand cryptocurrencies and call them by their real name after verifying what they are, whether it is a currency, a means of exchange, or even an asset that retains or loses value sometimes.

🟡Gold prices slipped on Friday as elevated U.S. Treasury yields dimmed non-yielding bullion’s allure in a holiday-thinned week, with markets focused on President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office and the potential impact of his inflationary policies on the Fed’s 2025 outlook.

SM News

27 Dec, 19:01

Fed Chair Jerome Powell, at his last press conference of the year, sounded very pleased with the way 2024 turned out.

"I think it’s pretty clear we have avoided a recession," he told reporters this month, and "the path down has been better than many predicted."

Fed policy is in a "really good place. I expect another good year next year."

Yet it’s clear that the No. 1 concern for Powell and his colleagues as 2025 looms is the same issue that attracted so much of their attention a year ago: inflation.

While a key gauge of inflation tracked by the Fed is considerably lower than its 2022 peak and down from a year ago, it is still above the Fed’s 2% target. And it has been moving sideways in recent months, another point of concern.

THE FED AVOIDED A RECESSION IN 2024. BUT IT COULDN'T SHAKE INFLATION

The Federal Reserve did what many thought it couldn’t achieve in 2024, and yet, in one respect, it still ended the year the way it started — worried about stubborn price pressures.

What it pulled off was a rare economic soft landing, using elevated interest rates to nudge inflation lower without triggering a US recession.

Unemployment rose but never got out of control. The economy remained surprisingly strong. And policymakers felt good enough about their progress to start cutting rates for the first time in more than four years.

DOLLAR SET FOR STRONGEST YEAR IN A DECADE ON STRONG U.S. ECONOMY

The dollar is on track for its best year in nearly a decade as a strong U.S. economy has dampened expectations of a rate-cutting cycle by the Federal Reserve, while President-elect Donald Trump’s threats of tough tariffs have boosted bets on a rally in the currency.

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index has risen more than 7% so far this year, its best year since 2015. All major developed-nation currencies have fallen against the dollar as other central banks have struggled to support their domestic economies.

• The market awaits strong evidence about the future of US interest rates

The US dollar rose in the European market on Friday against a basket of major and minor currencies, resuming its gains that were temporarily halted yesterday, on its way to recording a fourth consecutive weekly gain, thanks to the current rise in the yield on US 10-year Treasury bonds.

The chances of a US interest rate cut in January have declined, following the hawkish meeting of the Federal Reserve last week, and in order to re-price those possibilities, investors are awaiting the comments of some monetary policy makers in the United States during the coming period.

MORGAN STANLEY RAISES BRENT CRUDE PRICE FORECAST FOLLOWING OPEC+ DECISIONS

Morgan Stanley has raised its forecast for Brent crude prices in the second half of next year, driven by expectaions of a declining surplus in the oil market throughout the year. This adjustment follows recent decisions by the OPEC+ alliance to delay and ease planned production increases.

The American bank revised its forecast for Brent crude to $70 per barrel in the second half of 2025, up from its earlier estimates of $66 to $68. This revision reflects confidence in greater market balance between supply and demand, supported by the measures recently adopted by the alliance.

OPEC+, which includes OPEC members and key allies such as Russia, announced long-term strategic plans during its meeting last Thursday. The alliance decided to postpone production increases for three months until April. These decisions underscore the group's commitment to stabilizing the oil market, focusing on achieving a better supply-demand balance, reducing global surpluses, and supporting prices in the global oil markets.

FED OFFICIALS’ REMARKS: A BALANCED LABOR MARKET

Mary Daly, President of the San Francisco Federal Reserve, affirmed that the U.S. labor market remains stable and balanced. She noted encouraging progress in reducing inflation but emphasized the importance of monitoring the lagging effects of monetary policy on the economy.

Austan Goolsbee, President of the Chicago Federal Reserve, expressed optimism about the Fed achieving a neutral policy stance by the end of 2025. He acknowledged that monthly data might be unreliable on their own but gain significance when consistent trends emerge.

Goolsbee also noted that commodity prices might shift back into contraction while he services sector continues to improve, supported by positive signs from the housing market.

Beth Hammack, a member of the Boston Federal Reserve, stated that the Fed is at or near the right time to slow the pace of interest rate cuts. She highlighted that any decision in December’s meeting would depend on upcoming economic data. Hammack emphasized the continued strength of the U.S. economy and signs of a healthy balance in the labor market, although addressing inflation requires further effort.

She also focused on housing and real estate, indicating that these sectors could make inflation more persistent. Hammack added that consumers remain a strong support for the economy, driven by robust household balance sheets, providing the Fed with additional time to assess the impact of current monetary policies.

FED MEMBER BOWMAN CALLS FOR CAUTION IN MONETARY POLICY DECISIONS

Michelle Bowman, a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve, emphasized the importance of not rushing to lower interest rates, noting that the Fed has not yet achieved its target of reducing inflation to the 2% goal. She highlighted the continued strength of the U.S. economy, which necessitates cautious monetary policy to ensure price stability.

Bowman acknowledged the progress made by the Federal Reserve in alleviating inflationary pressures and cooling the labor market. However, she pointed out that unemployment remains well below the level required for full employment equilibrium. Additionally, core inflation remains higher than anticipated, with persistent upward risks that could affect market stability.

She warned that lowering interest rates too quickly could reignite inflation, underscoring the need for deliberate and balanced monetary policies that maintain equilibrium between fostering economic growth and ensuring inflation stability to sustain a stable economic trajectory.

TIKTOK DIVESTMENT LAW UPHELD BY FEDERAL APPEALS COURT

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a law requiring China-based ByteDance to sell TikTok or face an effective ban in the United States.

The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. rejected TikTok’s argument that the ban, signed into law by President Joe Biden in April, is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment rights of the 170 million Americans that use the popular social media service.

If ByteDance fails to sell TikTok by Jan. 19, the law would require app store companies, like Apple and Google, and internet hosting providers to stop supporting TikTok, effectively banning the app.

Lawmakers from both parties have cited concerns about national security issues related to TikTok’s alleged connections to the Chinese government as a reason to ban the app.

US FEDERAL RESERVE MEMBER: INTEREST RATE CUT IN DECEMBER NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION

In an interview with Fox Business, the President of the US Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco made important comments regarding monetary policy and the US economy, indicating that cutting interest rates during the upcoming December meeting is "not out of the question at all", stressing that the appropriate timing for such a decision is still under discussion.

The official stressed that the US labor market is in a completely balanced state and does not represent a major source of inflation, which reflects confidence in the stability of the economy. He also stressed the need to maintain an open mindset towards upcoming decisions, with a focus on gradually reducing interest rates if necessary.

Despite talk of the possibility of easing monetary policy, he explained that monetary policy will remain restrictive even with additional interest rate cuts, to ensure control of inflation and achieve financial stability.

He concluded his statements by indicating that the US economy is in a very good position, which enhances optimism about the economy's ability to face future challenges without the need for excessively stringent measures.

FEDERAL RESERVE MEMBER KUGLER MAKES KEY STATEMENTS ON INFLATION AND INTEREST RATES

In a press statement, Federal Reserve member Adriana Kugler emphasized that the bank will continue to make monetary policy decisions gradually, on a meeting-by-meeting basis, without a predetermined course.

Kugler explained that the October Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data aligns with the goal of achieving a 2% inflation rate, reflecting positive progress toward economic stability.

She noted that ongoing economic contraction and moderate labor market slowdown indicate that monetary policy goals are nearing the desired balance. The interest rate reductions implemented so far represent steps toward easing restrictive policies, with the Federal Reserve gradually moving toward a more neutral monetary stance.

Kugler stressed that the current monetary policy framework is appropriate for managing uncertainty, highlighting the importance of closely monitoring any risks or negative shocks that could affect supply and hinder progress in reducing inflation rates.

She added that higher productivity growth and increased immigration have played a significant role in delivering unexpectedly positive economic outcomes, supporting the Federal Reserve's objectives for achieving sustainable economic stability.

South Korea’s won on Tuesday fell sharply against the U.S. dollar shortly after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an emergency marital law.

The U.S. dollar traded up as much as 2.7% against the won, before paring gains. The won notched a fresh two-year low on the news.

Speaking during an unannounced televised briefing, South Korea’s Yoon accused opposition lawmakers of controlling the parliament and throwing the country into a political crisis.

“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order,” Yoon said, according to a Reuters translation.

The move, which hasn’t been imposed in Asia’s fourth-largest economy since 1980, was sharply criticized by opposition lawmakers.

Martial law refers to the temporary imposition of military authority over a civilian population, typically during a time of emergency.

Nvidia passed Apple in market cap on Tuesday becoming, for a second time, the most-valuable publicly traded company in the world.

Nvidia rose nearly 3% to close with a market cap of $3.43 trillion, ahead of Apple at $3.4 trillion. Nvidia shares have almost tripled in 2024, as investors show continued confidence in the company’s ability to maintain a rapid growth rate from its graphics processing units (GPUs) and a leadership position in the artificial intelligence market.

Apple shares are up about 17% this year, although many analysts say the recent release of the Apple Intelligence suite of features for iPhones could drive increased sales and put the company in a leadership position in “edge AI,” which relies less on GPU-based servers.

Nvidia is the dominant supplier of GPUs, which are used to develop and deploy advanced AI software like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Its stock is now up more than 2,700% in the last five years, and revenue has more than doubled in each of the past five quarters, tripling in three of them.

Apple was the first company to reach a $1 trillion and a $2 trillion market cap. Nvidia previously passed Apple in June before sliding over the summer. Microsoft, ranked third with a market cap of close to $3.1 trillion, is a major customer of Nvidia GPUs to fuel its partnership with OpenAI as well as its own AI ambitions.

BAKER HUGHES REVEALS STABILITY IN THE NUMBER OF US DRILLING RIGS!

Data released by Baker Hughes on Friday showed that the number of drilling rigs operating in the United States remained stable at 585, with a slight decrease in oil drilling rigs by one rig to 479, while the number of natural gas drilling rigs increased by one rig to reach 102 rigs.

US energy companies are moving towards increasing the number of drilling rigs to benefit from current price levels, amid market stability as a result of OPEC+'s commitment to reducing global production, which enhances the profits of shale oil companies and pushes them towards gradual expansion in drilling operations.

Baker Hughes is one of the world's leading companies in the field of oilfield services, providing a variety of products and services, including well drilling and oil reservoir consulting, to support the oil and gas industry.

VENEZUELA'S OIL EXPORTS RISE TO 4-YEAR HIGH

Venezuela's oil exports rose to a four-year high of nearly 950,000 barrels per day (bpd) in October, driven by higher crude output and higher sales to India and the United States, shipping data and company documents showed on Friday.

The recovery in Venezuelan oil output is mainly due to stabilization of processing in the Orinoco Belt, the country's largest oil region, which has helped recover heavy crude inventories, the documents show.

AMERICA’S FOES ARE UNITING

Why thousands of North Korean troops have deployed to Russia remains, as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin noted last week, “to be seen.” What’s clear is that the US must do more to grapple with deepening linkages between its foes.

The Pentagon says roughly 10,000 North Korean soldiers have now entered Russia. South Korean intelligence officials believe they include special operations commandos. A “small number” may have already transferred to Russia’s Kursk region, with others likely to join them in an attempt to reclaim territory seized by Ukrainian troops.

Although the new forces are unlikely to make up for Russian casualties, their deployment offers further evidence of how much help Vladimir Putin is receiving from a trio of anti-Western autocracies — forming a new “axis of evil,” some would claim.

BLACKROCK’S IBIT FUND SEES RECORD INFLOWS DESPITE BITCOIN’S DECLINE!

BlackRock’s IBIT Fund posted strong net inflows of $318.8 million, despite Bitcoin’s price falling to $68,000.

The fund’s surge in inflows is a notable exception amid declining inflows at other ETFs; the 12 Bitcoin ETFs combined saw inflows of just $32.3 million on October 31, compared to record inflows of $893.3 million on October 30. Valkyrie’s BRRR Fund also saw inflows of $1.9 million.

In contrast, other funds saw significant outflows, with Fidelity’s FBTC Fund, which had positive inflows over the previous two weeks, losing more than $75.2 million. Funds such as ARK 21Shares’ ARKB, Bitwise’s BITB, VanEck’s HODL, and Grayscale’s GBTC also saw combined outflows of $213.2 million.
