It appears the Musk/Trump "voluntary federal employee resignation offer" applies to consular officers - a disaster. We have been here before, and that's why we know this is very bad for legal immigration. Let me explain.
In 2017-8, Trump, through Secretary Tillerson, reduced State Dept's workforce by 8% for U.S. direct-hire personnel. Plus they adopted an attrition policy, not replacing those who quit. What resulted was a collapse of expertise in key bureaus, including the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
Hiring consular officers requires extensive language training, so replacing them is not easy, even when they are trying - which they were not! Many embassies in Africa, like Addis Ababa and Khartoum, soon went from 4 consular officers to only 1.
This caused immigrant visa backlogs to explode - eventually, 500k documentarily qualified immigrant visa applicants were awaiting interviews. (Covid did not help!). Oh, these stats are no longer published, and have been scrubbed from State Dept's website.
Many embassies still have not recovered from backlogs created after the first Trump admin's purge of consular officers. Immigrant visa applicants waiting on interviews at Ankara, Abu Dhabi, Yerevan, Nairobi, Montreal, and even Cuidad Juarez, still need to wait 1-2 years.
Finally, letting go of consular officers is bad business - unbecoming for the US. Most immigrant visa applicants (except DVs) pay visa interview fees months or years before their interviews. So State has the money to pay the consular officers! Letting them go is negligence.
What can visa applicants do? There's this tool called a mandamus lawsuit, where we challenge unreasonable immigration delays in federal courts. To find out more about that, get with me or another immigration attorney who handles them. Fight what you want and deserve! 👊 -curtis

Trump says he ordered military airstrikes in Somalia, without harming civilians. Hope that last part is true. - curtis

Update in #BadvipourvBlinken (group lawsuit filed by Iranian American families stuck awaiting final decisions on immigrant visas). Judge Carter issued a new order explaining plaintiffs wishing to pursue individual claims will need to file new lawsuits.
FAQ: I’m dual national, so I will not have to worry about impacts of a travel ban, right?
Answer: Wrong. Trump’s last travel ban had exception for dual nationals but that was only 1/2 the story. Dual nationals still subjected to same enhanced national security vetting (that starts with DS-5535, and awaiting outcome of Security Advisory Opinion), that was time-consuming prong of obtaining waiver of last ban. So it’s good to be a dual-national, but is not a golden ticket. -curtis
