☘️ Discuss both views

Q:
Many people argue that in order to improve educational quality, high school students are encouraged to make comments or even criticism on their teachers. Others think it will lead to loss of respect and discipline in the classroom. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

💡 Answer:

Finding ways to improve educational quality is often one of the top priorities in every education system. In some cultures, high school students are encouraged to give their opinions about teachers, but I believe that this can also give rise to lack of respect and discipline in the classroom.

On the one hand, it is true that feedback from learners may contribute to an improvement in educational quality. In many cases, the level of comprehension of students relies very much not on the content of the lesson but on the way teachers conduct it. If, for example, the class is slow, it will be ineffective for teachers to teach too fast so that most students fail to retain the information. Without the comments of students, it would be difficult to know whether the speed of the lesson is appropriate for the class, which may eventually impair the quality of the lesson.

However, there are several drawbacks of allowing students to make comments and criticism on their teachers. Firstly, teachers can be vulnerable to the negative words of students. Many will feel that their efforts in delivering the lesson deserve praise rather than criticism or any form of feedback. This idea is commonly shared by teachers in the education systems of many Asian countries. Secondly, the classroom may be in chaos due to massive numbers of comments. Opinions vary from students to students, and it would be impractical for teachers to work out a way of teaching that can satisfy all students.

In conclusion, it seems to me that encouraging high school students to comment about their teachers does not necessarily mean an improvement in education quality.

The line graph shows how the average price per movie changed in three different movie sources from 2005 to 2011, whereas the pie graphs show what proportion of market the three sources accounted for in 2005 and 2011.

As for prices per movie, that of cinema’s and DVD version’s saw a gradual increase, while the cost of downloading movies legally – including a sharp drop – saw fluctuation. Preferences while watching a movie, meanwhile, changed significantly within the given time frame.

The price per movie, whatever the source was, did not face an exponential rise. For instance, watching a movie in a cinema cost people around 5 dollars more in 2011 than in 2005, increasing from 9 to 14 dollars within 6 years. Similarly, DVD rents also grew by 2 dollars, which meant that it was the cheapest way to watch a movie both in 2005 and 2011. Downloading digital movies, however, faced a nearly three-fold decline within two years before recovering to its initial figure in 2009. It kept on trending upward to on average 9 dollars per movie downloaded in 2011.

The way film audience experienced some noticeable shifts in how they watched a movie. That is, while in 2005 a mere 5% of people watched movies online, in 2011 more than half of movie watchers chose the Internet to do so, which made it the most popular method by that time. The percentage of those going to a cinema halved (from 36% in 2005 to 18% in 2011). Another plummet in the numbers was observed in renting a DVD, with it facing a 33% fall in six years, still remaining the second most common method of watching a movie.

Caring for children is probably the most important job in any society. Because of this, all mothers and fathers should be required to take a course that prepares them to be good parents.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

The fact that childcare is of paramount importance in society has led many to advocate mandatory parenting courses for mothers and fathers. Proponents believe such initiatives help individuals become better parents. While these courses can enhance childcare awareness, I believe there is no universally applicable parenting method that can be effectively taught. Instead, governments could benefit more by establishing local parenting consultation centers.

Parenting classes can be valuable in teaching parents general principles of childcare. For instance, these courses often introduce parenting techniques that have been widely effective in promoting children's well-being. Through such training, not only do parents gain insights into children's psychological and physical needs but also learn about legal frameworks related to parenting. For example, a father might understand the negative long-term consequences of corporal punishment on a child's mental and physical health.

However, making these courses mandatory may not be a wise approach. As both a teacher and a father, I have observed that every child is unique, requiring personalized care and attention. One significant risk of parenting classes is the potential for overparenting and excessive control. Parents who take these courses may become overly cautious, turning what is supposed to be an effective parenting into detrimental micromanagement. This can lead to "spoon-feeding," a term used to describe a parenting style where children are denied the opportunity to develop autonomy due to excessive parental involvement.

Therefore, if increasing the number of good parents is the eventual target, I believe governments should focus on creating local childcare support centers. These centers would be more effective than compulsory courses because they would provide personalized advice tailored to each child's specific developmental needs. For example, childcare consultants could assess children’s cognitive and physical development and offer targeted recommendations to parents. Should parents require guidance on certain aspects of raising their children, these centers could provide one-on-one consultations, ensuring the advice is practical and relevant.

In conclusion, while parenting courses can provide general knowledge, requiring all parents to attend them is not an ideal solution. Establishing local consultation centers would be a more effective approach, as they focus on individual children and their unique needs rather than offering generalized advice. Parenting is an intricate process that requires understanding a child's distinct characteristics, which cannot be achieved through a one-size-fits-all approach.

The table compares various purposes for which mobile phones were utilised between 2006 and 2010.

Overall, while communication appears to have been the most common usage, mobile phones were least frequently employed for playing music. Notably, the figures for nearly all the categories showed upward trends, with video filming experiencing the largest increase.

In 2006, the majority of mobile phone owners relied on their devices for communication purposes, such as making calls and texting. The former was consistently used by nearly all owners throughout the period. The latter closely followed, with 73% of users initially, and this number continued to rise, reaching almost 80% by 2010.

In contrast, for entertainment purposes, mobile phones were used by a much smaller proportion of users. In 2006, two-thirds of mobile phone users regarded photography as one of the main features. This figure rose by 5 percentage points every two years. Music and gaming, on the other hand, were ranked as the least common functions of mobile phones. However, these features quickly gained popularity, and by 2010, their usage had reached 41% and 26%, respectively. The features with the most significant increases – browsing the web and video filming – together accounted for half of the users in 2008. By 2010, these functions were actively used by 73% and 35% of owners, respectively.

Did you know some cultures celebrate the longest night of the year? Let me tell you about Yalda Night, an ancient Persian tradition filled with warmth, family, and hope.

Celebrated on the winter solstice, Yalda Night symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. Families gather to share fruits like pomegranates and watermelons, read poetry from Hafez, and enjoy nuts and sweets. It’s a night of connection, storytelling, and embracing cultural heritage, reminding us to cherish togetherness and look forward to brighter days ahead.

❇️ Agree / Disagree

Q: The use of mobile phone is as antisocial as smoking. Smoking is banned in certain places so mobile phone should be banned like smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

💡 Answer:
#task2 #writingtask2 #sample
It has been claimed that like smoking, mobile phones should be banned in some places due to their harmful effects. While I accept that the use of mobile phones is antisocial in some ways, I believe it has more benefits and therefore should not be prohibited.

On the one hand, I agree that the use of mobile phones can sometimes be antisocial. Firstly, these devices might disturb people's work or study in some cases. For example, the sound from a mobile phone can interrupt a lecture, which affects the concentration of students. Secondly, the use of mobile phones also adversely impacts communication between people. Since individuals currently tend to spend too much time using mobile phones, they seem to have less time to interact with others.

On the other hand, I disagree that mobile phones should be banned because of some reasons. The first one is that since they allow people who live far away from each other to speak or send messages, they help people keep in touch more easily. For instance, students who study abroad can use mobile phones to make phone calls or even video calls with their family. The second reason is that mobile phones often provide users with many useful applications such as maps and weather forecast, which can make people's lives become easier. Additionally, using mobile phones is not as bad as smoking as some people think. While smoking directly affects people's health and leads to health problems, the negative influences of mobile phones are less serious.

In conclusion, while I agree that mobile phones are sometimes antisocial, I believe they should not be banned.
