📖 Diary of Mr. Photonaut. Entry dated November 7. 📖 

✍️ I was looking through old photos of cities today and noticed one odd detail - the people in these pictures are almost non-existent. 

😧 Houses, streets, squares - everything looks like time has frozen, and it's as if people were never there. I wondered why this is so?

It's because photography in the 19th century wasn't like it is now. Cameras required long shutter speeds, sometimes up to several minutes.  This was ideal for taking pictures of buildings, but people passing by would simply “disappear” from the frame during this time - they were too mobile for the long shutter speed and simply didn't get into the photo, or their silhouettes were blurred.

🤔 But maybe there is something symbolic in it. In such photos, the city appears in its architectural purity and tranquility. It's as if these photos emphasize that cities and buildings are timeless keepers of history, and that people come and go. Have you ever noticed this feature in old photos?

🫣 Nowadays we tend to capture crowds, movements and everyday life. But old photos seem to invite us back in time, where we can see the very essence of the city without distracting details.

Today, cityscape is one of the most popular topics for photography, but have you ever wondered how it all started? Let's take a look back in history and remember the first city photography and how the genre of city shots evolved.


🏙 The first city photograph - Paris, 1838 French photographer Louis Daguerre took the first photograph of a city known as Boulevard du Templ. It was a shot of a busy Parisian boulevard, which for the first time in history managed to capture a human figure - a random passerby standing still during a long exposure. Thus was born the genre of urban photography.

🌆 New York City in the early 20th century. When photography reached America, urbanism became even more popular. Photographer Alfred Stiglitz shot New York City with a focus on its growth and movement, displaying the industrial might of the metropolis. His famous photo “Snowfall on Fifth Avenue” showed the power of atmosphere in the cityscape.


📷 Since then, the cityscape has come a long way, evolving into a multifaceted genre that still inspires us today.

🌤 Use the golden hour

The best time to shoot cityscapes is early morning or sunset, when the light is soft and warm. At this time, shadows become long, which gives your shots depth. Golden hour will emphasize the details of buildings and create a warm atmosphere.

📐 Look for interesting angles

Don't be afraid to stray from the standard views. Shoot from a high, low angle or at an angle to add dynamics. For example, renowned New York City photographer Daniel Arsham uses unusual perspectives to show the city from unusual angles.

🪜 Shoot from above or from an angle. Food photos are best when taken from above or at a 45-degree angle. Shooting from above shows all the components of the dish, while shooting from an angle adds depth to the shot and emphasizes volume.

🗯 Today I'm going to talk about how cinematography influenced the horror style in photography and how we can use these techniques to create spooky shots.

🎥 Alfred Hitchcock's “Psycho” - the play of light and shadow
This iconic movie showed how shadows can become a major element of horror. Shoot in minimal light to create deep shadows like in scenes from “Psycho”. This contrast will give your photos an ominous atmosphere where every detail can be frightening.

🪓 Stanley Kubrick's “The Shining” - fear through foreshortening
Kubrick was a master of creating tension through unconventional angles. Think of scenes with long corridors or close-ups of faces full of terror. In photography, use low or high camera angles to create an unsettling feeling and an effort to dramatize the frame.

🕸 Tim Burton's Gothic Motifs.
Tim Burton's films, such as Corpse Bride and Sleepy Hollow, inspire dark but visually appealing shots. Add gothic elements to your photos - silhouettes of trees, old houses or foggy backgrounds - and your shots will look like scenes from a gothic fairy tale.

Halloween is right around the corner, which means it's time to create spooky and atmospheric shots! If you want to add some horror to your photos, I have some tips on how to convey true horror through the lens.

🌑 Shadows and low light. Horror starts with the play of light and shadow. Use dim lighting - candles, lanterns, or dim lamps. Create contrasts that emphasize dark details. Shadows add mystery and mystery to the shot.

👁 Unusual angles. Experiment with angles by shooting from below or above to create a sense of unease. The more unconventional the perspective, the more drama you'll add. Try focusing on small details like eyes or hands to heighten the tension.

🧐 Today I got to thinking: what do photos of our pets mean to us?
