Practice Elimination Approach for Prelims 2021 here ( Link: https://t.me/optmzCA_PreMains_practice )

1. Consider the following statements:
1. Jet streams occur in the Northern
Hemisphere only.
2. Only some cyclones develop an eye.
3. The temperature inside the eye of a cyclone
is nearly 10°C lesser than that of the
surroundings.
Which of the statements given above is/are
correct?
(a) 1 only (b) 2 and 3 only
(c) 2 only (d) 1 and 3 only

Optimized Current Affairs www.optimizedcurrentaffairs.in

24 May, 08:15

Elimination approach:
If someone understands Geography concepts, even if superficially, then he/she can easily point out there is no such explicit phenomenon of oceans and atmosphere which explicitly exists in one hemisphere only thus making this kind of statements extreme by use words such as "only". Even if something like this would have existed then we must have at least heard of it in our whole preparation journey to be just be able to at least identify it. Thus in such conceptual scenarios if you feel some words ("only", "all" etc.) look to have been added with intention of making statement artificial then consider them as being intentionally done thus helping you to eliminate those from correct ones. Now in the second statement even with "only" word why it is going to be correct because it is normalized statement by word followed "some", thus giving it chance to be true in some cases and false in some, which actually increases its chances of being correct.

In
such scenarios where UPSC has given numbers (facts) explicitly and too in conceptual case then if something is coming out from your common understanding of concept and is going well with the sense of given statement then it will be mostly right otherwise that statement is generally wrong.

1. Consider the following minerals
1. Bentonite 2. Chromite
3. Kyanite 4. Sillimanite
In India, which of the above is/are officially
designated as major minerals?
(a) 1 and 2 only (b) 4 only
(c) 1 and 3 only (d) 2, 3 and 4 only

Optimized Current Affairs www.optimizedcurrentaffairs.in

22 May, 14:25

Elimination approach:
Here options is one thing one must start with as none of the option has all correct which signifies that atleast one of these has to be wrong. As major and minor mineral based on our minimum understanding says is decided based on which thing central government wants to regulate and which ones state government are assigned to regulate by central government respectively.

As Chromite is something which might sound as major one without even actually knowing just from your science knowledge of Class 9th, which says chromium is rarer element in abundance and thus might carry strategic importance for a country. Thus leaving us with (a) and (d) options.

As our understanding of "UPSC kind of question" says that UPSC does not wants to know good you are in cramming but actually it wants to know how good you are at taking on spot thoughtful decisions. Thus from options (a) and (d) including 1 and leaving out 3 and 4 will sound more like we had to cram these facts before coming to exam thus using this logic we can safely pick option (d), which actually makes more sense for anyone to test someone's witiness.

Inspiration of the question:

Upsc has been asking question around Mineral and its Act, Rules and administration from last 2 years. Which can safely be considered as new trend of their focus in exam thus should not be missed by aspirants in preparing its basics (by doing basic google search)
